I just came upon a backglass for a 1942 flipperless pinball called, "Hit the Japs". It is a patriotic (for then) conversion kit from a 1940 Gottlieb "Gold Star". It does have some delamination but still looks pretty good, despite being incredibly politically incorrect today.

If anyone as any input or information about this glass or the machine itself, I would love to hear it. I can post pics if someone is really interested, but let's just say it's somewhat offensive.

    Cheers,

    Alan

This glass has been reproduced but I do not remember who did it.

    #6 1 year ago

They also made Knock out the Japs, Sink the Japs, Slap the Japs and Smack the Japs.
All conversion kits made less than a year after Pearl Harbor.
    They definitely knew their market.

    #7 1 year ago

I believe there were also conversion kits for Rifle Gun games., with the same type of title's.

    Those are historically important.
Hopefully people understand the context of the times and don't just find them objectionable without understanding.

Are you asking me to put this in historical context?

Funny, I recently saw two of the same repro in an antique store in Kaukauna, WI.

Ya, for sure. I’d love to have one.

Why would it be offensive? In 1945, we were at war with Japan...at least that's what some people would have us believe....

    #14 1 year ago

This is a title that probably would not get re-made in todays world. Lol.

Seeing as how a couple of you guys might be interested, I will bring this to Allentown Pinfest for sale. $40.00. Definitely some ink loss, but it is an original.

    I think that's Tojo...

As for offensive, those were the times but people just can't understand things in context and want to bury it like it should never have happened.

My dad was a WWII vet of both the European and Pacific theaters. My mom with in the British Army attached to the Bletchley Park code breaking operation. My wife had an uncle in the AAF who flew over the Hump and another who was a Marine who was on Tarawa.

They are all gone but they would all be appalled at the horrific political correctness of today. They didn't have time to be worried about cartoonish Japanese figures on a backglass. They were too busy staying alive. They would not approve of attempts to bury history because it doesn’t align with tender feelings today.

Neither would Big Indian. Still, I framed a glass from one and it's hanging on my wall.

My comment is made tongue-in-cheek for those who seem to want to re-write history and create a pretend new world wherein no one is ever bad and we are all equally guilty and no one is better than anyone else. Does that clarify?

Nope, those of us that remember when this country wasn't being ran by woke wackos would rather stay, and through legal means take back our country before its too late. Otherwise our founding fathers fought and died for nothing.

Yes. That's always the solution. Run away.

When I was younger love it or leave it was the slogan of pro Vietnam War people. I'm not ever sure what context you're trying to use it in here.

Most people just want to live and let live. They don't want to be told what to think, or what to believe in, what to drive or how to live. They don't care if people want to be a woman one day and a man the next. They just don't want to be told that they have to accept that and if you don't, then you're a bigot or something else. And have your entire being judged by that.

Yup, that’ll work for sure! It’s cute you think you can do anything about culture.

    #29 1 year ago

Wish people could see this machine as a work of historical beauty rather than instantly turning the thread into a left vs right online riot. Man, current times bum me out.

    #30 1 year ago

I don't have an opinion one way or the other regarding artwork made during wartime.

You can have all the political viewpoints you want but it’s IMPOSSIBLE to change culture. All the anger thrown around in the thread thus far is actually all cultural and has zero to do with politics. I wish people would realize this is our current culture and you can’t change it. Woke and cancel culture. Even has the WORD culture right in the phrase! I don't like it either but please realize it's far from political. For the most part, young Americans do not care about politics, only culture.

I only made an initial comment because sometimes I am embarrassed to be a part of this community. No country (or state!) is perfect but I would never call my county a shit show if I intended to stay in it, I would just look elsewhere to live. But to each his own!

If you are all begging for a comment that IS political... Why don't we have an age restriction of 70 y.o. on US politicians? A CBS poll last year revealed the majority of Americans believe that "70" is the age most mentioned when asked what age is "too old" to lead? I agree with this and I will never understand why our political system refuses to make bipartisan improvements like this. Don't they care about us? Don't even get me started on the Presidential Electoral College. Used since 1787, it must be the best way because just look at how great everything in our government is running now?

Political parties only exist to divide people! Now THAT'S how you BURN down a thread.

If you're upset that someone thinks you're a bigot you can put work on to understand their perspective. Or not, either way you can get on with your life.
You need to wear a seatbelt and get your car certified, and you probably shouldn't dehumanize people just because you don't understand them, as a general rule. Live and let live, right? Absolute freedom is a myth in a society, and we all participate amongst cultural and legal structures.

As for the backglass, why not offer it to a local Japanese Cultural Association and see if they want to help give you context for understanding it amongst a variety of perspectives?

Yeah maybe they can get a head start on hiring another traitor like comrade Tucker Carlson to spew their totally-fake news. Maybe before they are forced by law to cough-up another billion dollars for their highly un-American and highly un-Patriotic BS.

I don't need advice from Canadians on perspective on WWII, given that I had parents, a grandfather and uncles who fought it.

Warner Brothers still sell those cartoons. They just precede them with a note to give historical context.
You just walking around your house and imagining things being 'cancelled'?
