I did something colossally stupid and completely blew up a board in a modern Stern SAM board. No GI, sound, display.......nothing. I was searching extensively for a replacement board to no avail.
Someone recommended a fellow Pinsider DKERUZA, and I took the board to him.
He was able to isolate the issues, order the replacement parts, and returned my board in PERFECT working order.
If you're frustrated with a surface mount board, this is your guy:

Thanks for the mention, I appreciate it.

    Good to know.
It would help to know what you did to the board, parts damaged and replaced. Let’s help someone down the road who might do the same thing.

I plugged in a topper when the power was on and didn’t have the pins aligned, and pop goes the weasel. I’m not sure of the parts involved to be honest.

The board didn't have 3.3v so 1st thing I did was replace the 3.3 voltage regulator. After that the board booted. When tried the board in the game, there was no sound and the video on the DMD was garbled only if you have a color DMD, with a regular LED DMD would not show video.
The sound part was easy, there is only 2 chips involved in the output other than the CPU, the DAC chip was super hot. Voltages going to the chip were right. so I replaced it and sound came back.
For the video part, I measured the signals with the oscilloscope coming from the Xilinx chip and they were fine. The output from the HC244 seemed also fine but there was a difference in one of the outputs, so I replaced the chip and fixed the video output.
Then game wasn't saving the time, so I figured the RTC chip was bad.
And lastly, the ferrite bead on L1 was blown.
So, the short/over voltage propagated through the board. At first, I suspected that one of the Xilinx chips faulty which is a bummer because you can only get them from Stern.

BTW, I do not only repair Surface mount boards, I do all kinds, mostly from WPC era and up.

    Well done.
Quite a few DAC, PCM1755DBQ have been failing, seems especially on Star Trek.

Thanks for the after action report dkeruza

Hell, even I didn’t know it was that involved.
You are correct though- he is the man. What a lifesaver.

gonna guess and say he meant what he said as were talking SAM board set here. my guess is that high pitch ass pop bumper lane complete noise, i hate that noise and so does anyone in the house as well.

Yeahh, I replaced one in an X-Men board that the chip burned the actual PCB and most of the traces because of how hot it got. I had to recreate the traces with wires in not a nice looking way, but got the sound back.
