I've had this kicking around in my head for a while now (as you can see from the post date of the first video below, May 2020). I've messed around with it for a while, got distracted, came back to it, etc. I should be able to stick with it now, we'll see.

Anyway, I plan to use fastpinball hardware, and I kinda lucked out that I messed around so long that they're almost ready to release their new hardware. Go figure.

I bought a BluRay copy of the first movie a while ago, figured out that no computers in my house have a DVD drive any more, and had to buy an external drive. I need to rip it and pull the clips.

I have a vague idea of the playfield layout in my head, but I'll experiment as I go along.

I've had a thing for Highlander since the 90s. Movies and TV shows. I'm not 100% sure if I'm going to incorporate both, we'll see. Regardless, you can't go wrong with the soundtrack.

I'll post pics once I get my act together. Here's a start with some videos on the scratch built cabinet. I'm almost done with it. Finally...after it sitting there, viscously staring at me for 2 years.

Oh, and my toddler is Connor...and boy 2 will be born at the end of December...he may be Duncan. We'll see. Definitely no relation to anything in this thread.

Yeesh, a seriously fun movie, with a stella soundtrack from the greatest band of all time, Queen. This theme will live forever.

Have fun making it, or at least having a go.

How do you like that CNC? I've seen some videos on it and it looks pretty slick

    #5 1 year ago

Nice! My all time favorite movie.

I've been playing around making a highlander pin in virtual pinball for at least a couple years now. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

That's awesome. Look forward to watching it come together. The reboot movie is supposedly coming soon from the director of John Wick.

    There can be only one.

It works good for stuff like signs and such that don't have to be accurate. But it is terrible for making things like small circles (e.g. button holes) and such. You can make some cool things with it, it's just not too useful for pinball stuff except for maybe the bigger cab pieces.

There's one out there. In fact, someone just released an updated version of the backglass. It's fairly basic, but a fun game.

Thank you! I've heard about a re-boot for some time. I'm sure they'll screw it up somehow...probably by thinking beheading is too violent or something and making it PG.

About 2.5 years ago, when I started building my Virtual Pin cab, I bought a bunch of hardware for this. Because, if you buy 2x of everything, your wife won't notice that you're starting two projects at once. And somehow the $$ doesn't seem so bad on the second project. Well, in the interim, we had a kid, so most of my stuff was boxed on put into the back of the closet. Over Thanksgiving holiday this year, I dug it all out and organized it. I'd actually bought quite a bit more than I remember. Always a good surprise. Here's some stuff I found:

    A whole bunch of hardware:

Some score reels, octagon style, new pops, flippers, and slingshots:

    Lockdown bar and receiver:

    Amp, speakers, fans, etc.:

Various wire and some "might use" mechs:

    Drop assemblies:

    Bells & Whistles:

Zipper Flipper mech, maybe a Medusa style feature or something?:

A couple kick out hole assemblies:

Rails, trim, and a monitor for the backbox:

Finally made some progress. I was finishing up an EM restoration and this took a back burner. Hoping to get with it and make some progress this summer.

You should make it so there can be only one. Extra ball.

Great theme with so much potential. Like you said, can't go wrong with the queen soundtrack. I bet you have something awesome in mind to represent the quickening.

I've been thinking about this a project lot. Haven't made much physical progress, but been thinking.

I got a most of the remaining playfield parts from Marco (it gets expensive). I need to order some FAST boards to get started and am probably going to get a Bob's CNC to tinker with. Right now, I am waiting for $$ to accumulate to buy both of these items, then I'll be able to move forward pretty rapidly, I think. There's not really a MakerSpace near me worth anything and my wood-skills/time-I-have-to-work-on-stuff would not suit trying to do this manually without a CNC.

I have a pretty neat idea for fights involving a Zipper Flipper set up pared with the roto target assembly from a King-of-Diamonds. However, I hadn't considered The Quickening. Didn't even occur to me until you wrote that. I'm going to have to think about it. Maybe a multi ball, shaker motor, light strobe, epileptic fit. Actually sounds pretty cool.

This is a slow process. Even so, I'm taking longer than I wanted to, even to get started. I have been slowly acquiring parts. Here's some stuff I've purchased for this in the recent past.

    A. Wire. Way too much, but the economics of scale kicked in when I bought it and now I'll have enough to last me the rest of time.

    2. Sword. Cause why not?? I picture this sticking out of the top as a topper. Maybe with one of those lightning circles or something behind it. It's not a "real" sword, but it's big and heavy. If you broke into someone's house in the middle of a night and a mostly naked 6'-4" red head in boxers came out of a bedroom with sticky-up hair wielding this, you'd probably re-think your life choices.

    D. Pinball Life Parts. It's been a while, I forget exactly. Trough parts, auto plunger, VUK, stand ups, wire loom ties, etc.

I'll get this going sooner or later. Kinda need to spring for a fastpinball computer board set to get started next.

    Just saw this thread.

Love the idea and interested to see how you do this in an EM format.

How on earth did you come across and old set of Zipper Flippers? I'm going through a 4MBC now and the first time with Zippers. Very cool mehcanical design but the downside is the large amount of playfield realestate they take up. It's a big and expensive assembly to produce and I understand why they went to the "play more" post.

Personally not a fan of 2" flippers at all with Zippers being the exception. The shot angles are completely different in the open position vs the closed position.

I hope you continue this project and very interested as I too have hada few ideas floating around in my head that just won't go away. You know what I mean....

I think I got the zipper flippers off of eBay a number of years ago. I've had them for a while, I forget.

I need to lay the parts out and see how they'll fit. You're right about real estate. I might not have enough room to do what I'm thinking...probably won't have enough room. But that's the fun part, right? Experimenting.

Fast has released their playfield interface board, so I'll probably get a set of boards pretty soon. I can fiddle around with it until I ask my wife for forgiveness after buying a CNC machine without telling her. I want to get this going. I've had it rolling around in my head for years and haven't made any real progress.

Make her something with the CNC and you'll be somewhat "forgiven".

Keep at this, it's a very cool project.

Can’t wait to see how this goes.
Love Highlander. And a new reboot on The way.
