Is it the original CPU? Did it ever have any repairs done or visible damage present around U41 and or U42? These are the PIA chips for the Display interface.

Does everything else work? Switches, solenoids (when it happens, remove the glass and see if the kickers, pop-pumpers and / or targets still work). This can lead you in the direction of the problem. If none of them work, it's possible the main CPU is dropping out.

If everything else works, it could be an intermittent display problem. Check for bad connections on the Display Master board.

Arnt those chips close to the batteries? Is there a leaking battery?

That's why I asked. I just repaired a High Speed CPU that had leaked battery guts all over it. Both U41 and U42 are associated with the display interface so either one having problems could cause the display to go out.

But, it could be a lot of other things too. A little more information would help narrow it down.
