I picked up a pretty banged up High Speed for $100.00 and I thought I'd try my hand at some Playfield restoration. I've done PF touchups in the past and but nothing like what this one needs. Thanks to Vid1900 and his PF restoration thread, I've learned a lot. I've been collecting all the tools I'll be needing over the past couple of months. I know this won't turn out perfect, but I'll be trying my best and really using this to learn from so that I can continue to better my skills. Warning--I go at my own pace. Which isn't always fast---life takes priority. Hope you enjoy.

I will be following...there seems to be quite a few restoration threads lately and I think its great...please post a lot of pictures and description...good luck!

EDIT:$100 for a high speed...nice find

Removed mylar. Used the freeze technique which went well, took a little bit of artwork with it. Removing the glue is the real PITA! Trying flour and alcohol. Seems to be working, just takes forever.

very cool project. $100 is crazy cheap and the pf looks to be manageable.
thanks

After Mylar and glue removal I did some more magic eraser and alcohol work to remove some ball swirl marks, wiped it all down with naptha and started in on the first area of paint touch...the lower black area. I plan on using a lot of water slide decals on this project, and that's what will replace the painted over text and large arrows in this area. Scans were to help with that. Using frisket and Xacto knife to cut out areas to be painted black. Again, this is my first time using many of these tools and techniques including the frisket, an airbrush, HVLP spray gun, wet sanding and clear coating. So far it's a lot of work but really fun!

Next I need to scrape off any lettering on the inserts I'll be replacing and sand and clean the shooter lane. I've already done some small bondo repair. I will be shooting my first coat of 2 part auto clear soon to seal it all in and protect my work. Time consuming, back breaking work.

Screwed up here. Accidentally wiped my freshly painted area with a rag with Paint Thinner on it!. Thought it was my Naptha rag. Oh well, more practice I guess.

OK. First clear coat done. This coat is just to lock in the existing artwork and what I've done so far. Mostly happy with it. No fish eyes, but for sure some orange peel. Not sure why, but I'm suspecting I let the PF set in the sun too long before shooting the clear. Another lesson learned.

Now wet sanding first coat of clear and to knock down the orange peel. I'll fill some low spots with clear in a eye dropper, sand some more, then on to some more paint work. Having fun with this!

OK. After more paint work I shot the second coat of clear. This one went much better! I adjusted the gun a bit and didn't let the PF heat up in the sun prior to shooting. Nice and smooth!

Was wondering how to repair this area. I had a buddy do some Coral Draw work and he came up with this. I think rather than doing it all in one piece, I'll have the text separate. This way I can use some frisket to make templates of all these areas with the yellow/red dots and do all of the yellow/dot areas on the PF so that they match, then a separate decal for the text on top. The text is only on one of them. OF course these will all be on water slide decals. Just printed on paper to check color and sizing.

Looking good so far. Keep up the good work.

I have used water-slide decals on 2 play-fields with pretty good results. However I had everything touched up and decals applied before laying down the clear-coats.

Looks great, but don't you need to protect that Star Rollover? Also the Kickout hole?

The kickout gets a new cup so not worried about that. And the star rollover I will just gently file as needed. I took the actual stars and and so far the still fit with some clearance, so just a bit of filing at assembly should do it. These are very light coats so far.

Give it a shot. It's a lot of work, but very rewarding.

Roadway sprayed. Not a perfect match, but since I'm doing the entire thing you'll never know. I'll do another coat of clear to lock this in.

Do you want to fix my Pinbot when your done with your High Speed?

#36 7 years ago

That looks really good. Did you do the grey and then replace the cars and yellow stripe or cut around each item and just spray grey?

If you zoom in I think I can make out the frisket over the cars and other places no paint should go.

Only if you don't mind it taking 8 months!

Masked off the cars and stripes with frisket. Needs a bit of touch up around the car shadows and some of the stripes came out like crap. I'll have to add some of those manually. I've still got at least 2-3 more coats of clear in between more airbrushing and touching up. Still need to airbrush the blue around the tach and all of the white areas. Then water slide decal time, then a final Clear.

Looking good! I did the same with my Pinbot, compared to the "after", the original white was more like pale almond. Its really amazing the amount of damage some tiny 5v incandescent light bulbs can do!

Impressive...as always I'll be watching this thread...keep up the good work!
