Hi all. I didn’t see a “new members start here” sub forum so I guess I’ll start here.

I just picked up my first pin - one that I played a lot as a young teen. I always promised myself I’d get a PinBot but instead I got this High Speed.

I just got it back from the Pittsburgh area early this morning after a long round trip drive from my home near Cincinnati yesterday afternoon. Right after work, I carted it out of the garage and into the basement. Put the legs back on and fired it up. It showed a series of switches in some “Adjustment” display right at power on. The seller told me that if the game doesn’t see the switches activate for some time, it logs them into memory and displays the inactive switches this way. Good tip! It also has a quite badly touched-up playfield. I knew this going in and have already set aside the cash for a hardtop.

I studied the manual and found that all the errors were coming from a single switch column. I have an engineering background - and specifically had a long time interest in amusement lighting. At one point I worked for a scoreboard manufacturer and learned all about display matrices. The switch matrix wasn’t too foreign, either, just an industrialized version of something you’d find in a microwave oven. Cool beans.

I studied the schematic and decided to pull the CPU board and replace Q43. As I suspected, it was shorted Base-Emitter. I had a 2N4401 on hand instead of the 2N3904. For this very non critical application it’s all the same.

Dropped that in and all the missing switches on the bumpers, hideouts and ball shooter came to life. I still got the power-on error until I ran the test mode and manually manipulated all the switches.

I’ll add photos as I go along.

High speed was my first and I know some others that also started in to the hobby with this game. High speed club had been very helpful. Congrats and have fun.

welcome to the addiction! High speed is a great game. I started with 1 pin about 12 years ago, and now have 14 pins.

HS was my first pin and I still have it.

Lost my Pinballirginity™ to High Speed over 10 years ago. *blush*

Great game. Still have my HS as well. Keeper, imho.

Pic of my first two pins was taken the summer of 2009.

HS is my first as well! Got it just about a year ago and right now looking for my second. I also had good memories playing it as a teen.

HS was one of my first games and is still one of the most played games in my collection.

Just got HS... it's my second Pin... Got my first back in October (Lectronamo by Stern)>

I'm thinking a hardtop is in my future for HS... please update with any progress on a hardtop. Curious how difficult a project it really is. Seen mixed reviews on here.

Totally worth it. Mine played OK before but played awesomely after the Hardtop.

Hardtop install is relatively simple if you go slow and be methodical.

I cataloged my HS Hardtop install here: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/hardtop-on-a-high-speed

I’ve had the machine for just shy of two months and I play it every day. I’ve had a few repairs along the way, all switches and lamps. I figured out that the micro switches can be dunked in high purity alcohol and worked back and forth a few times while “underwater” to restore operation. Not sure how permanent that it is but it saved me when I bought the wrong size switch.

I’ve done the flipper rebuilds and am sending the ramp off this weekend to get a clear one from @Freeplay40.

The next thing I want to do is the hardtop but I’m also prepping a house to be sold so that will take a couple weekends out of April/May.

I’m terrible for documenting a repair/rebuild. I am too impatient/just want to finish it and really don’t have that kind of time anyway. I’m here to learn and have fun. Take that for whatever it’s worth.
