Just picked this up and I'm diagnosing the first run of issues.

The Speeder 2 and 4 displays don't seem to work no matter what I do. Speeder 2 has come loose from the top where it should be stuck down but the pins all still look good. That said, I had a similar issue with my Af-Tor and had to resolder a break. Wouldn't be surprised if that happened here. Not sure what's up with the Speeder 4 display since everything looks fine there. I tried swapping cables and that didn't fix anything, so I think the cables themselves are okay.

The other main issue I'm seeing is that it seemingly won't save settings no matter what I do. I've tried several different sets of batteries, although I haven't actually measured the output voltage from the pack to make sure it's getting what it needs. Refresh my memory on where the probes need placed for that?

Otherwise this seems like a pretty decent example, save for the typical playfield yuckiness. The cab and the glass are both pretty nice IMO. Looking more and more like a prime hardtop candidate. It plays fairly okay except the left pop bumper isn't registering all the way around the skirt (spoon or switch adjustment will probably make it better until a full rebuild happens) and I can't seem to make the ramp shot from the upper right flipper, so maybe a rebuild needed there, I'm not sure.

All in all, can't complain for what I spent. After I fix what needs fixed I should be in this for about what pinside says it's "worth" but it should be A REALLY nice example. Or at least I think so!

Try swapping display 1 with display 2 and the same with 3 and 4. See if the problem follows the display.

Swapping yields expected results. Instead of saying Adjust, Speeder 1 says Failure. And nothing on Speeder 2.

Should I just say hell with it and buy an Xpin setup? It's pretty damn expensive, but I'm really considering it.

That is an option but it is nice to keep it "original" with the Glass display.

I had the same problem. Speeded 2 was dead. I diagnosed it to a bad display as it looks like you have done. I bought a NEW display from Steve at PBR. It is a little pricey $65.00 but I wanted to keep it original. The new display has a nipple on the back and you have to do some modification to the PCB. Drill a hole to accommodate for the glass nipple. When you drill the hole you drill through 3 traces and have to route new wires to make the connections again. It is a bit of a job but if you are comfortable with Soldering you should be ok. You can also keep your eye open for used displays, they pop up now and then. However they may die on you as well.

I removed the battery holder on the CPU board and installed an NVRAM chip. No more "ADJUST FAILURE" message!

Good suggestions. I was thinking about a button cell battery conversion to replace the onboard battery pack which I'm assuming failed. Nvram of course would be a viable option also.

I got the machine for $200 less than I anticipated (and I had planned on the hardtop expense all along) so spending a few bucks on displays hurts a bit less. Either way, I got the high speed for pretty damn cheap. Bringing it up to par should still have me in for a reasonable amount..I hope.

Good enough.

Wolffpactech has some really nice LEDs for system 11 now. Some of the nicest I've seen and they are very reasonably priced.

Hell of a deal! I went ahead and ordered the xpin orange set for 200. I'm also ordering a red ramp replacement and I paid for my hardtop yesterday. Still need to tackle that adjustment error too but less concerned since it's about to be out of commission for the foreseeable future while I shop it.

Hey Jordan,

I sent you a PM about buying your High Speed Gas Score displays you are replacing. Let me know if you want to sell them.

Thanks
