You have done the reading and you do understand the info. This game came with serial coils. If you are not a purist and just want the best working machine then replace them all with the FL-11630 coils with caps and side springs. If you like games original then use Fl-23/600-30/2600 series coils. All 3 coils should be the same size in this game. As far as wiring goes, you need to decide which coils you are going to use first.

Quoted from MikeVarney:

So, is the difference between Serial and Parallel coils for flippers just the difference of the placement (and number) of the diodes? Or are there wiring changes in the actual machine?

The difference is in the way the 2 windings are connected to each other and the number of diodes. The original coils in the game are FL-23-600-30-2600 series coils with one diode, Easy way to tell is where the coils are connected, series are connected in the center. Any time you get new coils, make sure they are correct by testing each winding for the correct ohms. You can find out what the correct should be by looking them up on the coil resistance chart site.

I can install either type of coil into the machine? Just don't want to fry things.

Yes either will work basically the same, benefits from parallel wound coils are longer lasting EOS switch contacts. Game wiring for the both is the same except you will need to add the capacitors in parallel to the EOS switches, but you wont fry anything.

The reason I say to test the resistance is that parts today are not to be trusted with out testing first. Just my opinion.

Quoted from MikeVarney:

LowerLeft: FL-11753 (2 diodes)
LowerRight: FL-24/600-30/2600 (1 diode)
UpperRight: FL-11630 (2 diodes)

The biggest issue with these coils is the FL-11753 being much weaker then the other lower flipper coil. But it was what they had in the tool box that day.

All flipper switches for both series and parallel flipper coils have had a capacitor on them. They are listed in the manual on page 46 and 47. As far as the EOS capacitor goes, they were a standard on Williams machines from F-14 on until FH. They will be listed in the manual.

Here are the caps you need, 3 of each. I would replace the EOS switches too.

The cap on the left cabinet switch is not correct too. And the right cabinet switch needs 2 caps installed as there are two switches.

Quoted from MikeVarney:

Does that really make a difference?

Not that big a deal in a home use machine.

Making it like this....

This is correct except that there will be 2 diodes on each coil.

When you add the caps to the EOS switches you will need to use some heat shrink on the cap leads to insulate them from touching any metal parts. Also you will need to find a way to secure them in place to keep the leads from breaking from vibration.

Quoted from MikeVarney:

I also see that capacitors don't care what direction they're installed in.

These capacitors are non polarized and can be installed in any direction. But some capacitors are polarized and direction is very important. In the schematics they are marked differently to let you know which are which.

Quoted from MikeVarney:

I'll follow up in a few days and let you know how it's going!

Looking forward to it.
