Finally found a reasonably priced High Speed project and I'm thrilled to finally join the HS club! Took a 9 hour round trip to pick it up. I've definitely got my work cut out for me on this one. It came with a mostly populated second play field which is in really good shape. The cabinet and legs are in fantastic shape, but the playfield is pretty heavily worn.

It's missing the beacon, and the guy had bought some off the shelf beacon to replace it. It looks like it's about the same size as the original, but I doubt it will wire in quite as easily.

Supposedly the game had been booting and playing, but it is not anymore. First thing will be to clean it up so I can see what I've got to work with, then I'll try and figure out why it's not booting, and then move on to a playfield swap.

I'm definitely leaning towards a hardtop. @aflacjack, wow, that looks amazing!

Making some good progress on the game. Several fuses were out. With those replaced, the game boots and plays. In fact I had a fantastic game last night if 4 million!

The CPU board has extensive heat damage in the solenoid driver section and battery corrosion damage. Someone repaired the solenoid driver section and it actually works perfectly. More on the battery damage further on.

The displays for player 1 & 3 are mostly working, but occasionally drop a segment like they have a bad connection.

The displays for player 2 & 4 are dead. The pin came with replacement glass displays for 2 & 4. I've replaced the player 2 display glass and will be doing the same for player 4.

IMG_20220713_163740140 (resized).jpgIMG_20220713_163740140 (resized).jpg
IMG_20220713_163728237 (resized).jpgIMG_20220713_163728237 (resized).jpg

On to some other display issues. So player 2's display is always garbled up. I've swapped both alphanumeric displays and cables around. Player 1 is always fine. The CPU board damage is around the SRCs for the display connector.

IMG_20220713_172300330 (resized).jpgIMG_20220713_172300330 (resized).jpg

From what I've seen though on other posts is that corrosion on those SRCs will affect all displays, not just a specific player. The schematics seen to back that up, but i could be reading it wrong. Since player 1&3 are fine, but 2&4 are not, should I be focusing by attention to the display driver board on the back of the lightbox?

Added 21 months ago:

Did some additional testing and noticed that the player 2 displays last 2 digits are showing the ball in play number as well as occasional garbage when it is supposed to display things like the bonus. Not sure if that info helps.

Some more updates on my HS.

I installed a beacon last night. It came with a "replacement" beacon when I bought it. It's a cheap $20 beacon meant to plug into a wall outlet. I hooked it up last night through the service outlet and re-wired the Bosch relay to control the service outlet. It works great and comes on at the same times the stock one would. It's surprisingly bright as well! I hadn't realized how much the beacon was used. I thought it was just after you ran the red light, but it's used during multiball and when you score an extra ball. It also turns on occasionally during attract mode which surprised me when I was playing a different pin.

As a note, I kept the original 23V wires intact, pulled the fuse, and wrapped electrical tape on the connectors so that if I ever find a stock beacon for a reasonable price, I can easily revert to it if I want to.

Quoted from motorbreth77:

Joined the Club, Currently working out some issues before a full clean, wax, polish job.
What a game, for '86 Ritchie knocked it out of the park.
Shot in the dark here, but does anybody have any used plastics lying around?
I am in need of the left side triple bank stoplight plastic. The one with the yellow sign that says "Drive 55, stay alive" or something like that.
I don't care if its beat up or warped, just need the holes to be intact, the one I have is pretty broken.

That seems to be a common one to get trashed. Mine has one intact hole (upper left by the spinner). I put some offset washers under the nut on the other 2 posts to anchor the plastic down until I find a replacement. Otherwise it moves all over the place and usually rotates out and over the far left lane.

Can someone take a pic of the lock/hardware arrangement for the backbox lock?
My game has nothing up there.

Here you go:

Got my High Speed restoration done. Hard top and all new parts. Only flasher covers left to put on. If anyone needs plastics or beacon hardware just let me know. I’ll be posting them for sale shortly.
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

That looks fantastic! Congratulations on finishing it.

I'm in need of the plastic by the left traffic light target bank (55 speed limit one) and the slingshot plastics.

Also, depending on how much you are asking for it, I'm interesting in the beacon parts.

Thanks!

Hey all!
New HS owner here!
When i went into multiball/getaway mode, the game only gave me 2 balls.
1st one locked on the escape ramp shot
As soon as you plunge the 2nd one, it seems to start the multiball. So the 3rd one never enters play
Is this a menu setting or is something reading wrong perhaps?

I had the same thing happen a while back.

It's usually a shooter lane switch issue if I'm not mistaken. It's either miss-adjusted or not working.

I finally rolled this game for the first time. Until now, my highest score was 5-6 million, which i had managed to get a handful of times. I scored 12,438,780!

Factory settings on 3 ball play. I ran 6 red lights, but only managed to collect 1 jackpot (at 1.6 million) and too many extra balls to keep count of! Lots of maxed out bonus and multipliers and lots of 100k freeways. I don't know how long the game lastest, but it was long and fun.

Image showing score at the end of the game as well as high score entry showing the machine rolled over. and yes, i did screw up putting my initials in. The right side displays are messed up, so i can't actually see the letters when i put them in. I miss counted the number of flipper presses.

Quoted from LGFAutos:

Hi All,
Haven't been on here for a long time. Have had other commitments. Haven't even turned on any of the pinballs.
So had some free time, check over HS and cleaned her up. It amazes me how much dust collects under the glass on the PF.
So shot a few balls, and noticed that the ramp points was acting weird. As in I would get 50,000 2 or 3 times than it would jump up to 100,000 instead of 75,000. Then back down to 50,000, I even managed to get it to 125,000. This is on the same ball
So could someone tell me if this is right (i'm sure it use to goes up 25,000 from 50,00 each time you get the ball over the ramp in the same ball play), or what might be causing this weird fault if it is one.
Thank you for any help on this.

The ramp bonus value starts at 50k. Each time you make a lit 1-6 target, the ramp value is advanced by 25k up to 250k. Once collected or the ball is drained, the ramp value goes back to 50k.

Enhanced the poppers with horn sounds. Cool effect. Also added an active chopper that triggers during the chase. Both add a lot to the game.

That's super cool! I love the horn sounds. It makes me think of the traffic jam mode from Judge Dredd.

Some mods are easier than others. Here’s a simple one that will bring your High Speed closer to home. I changed the street signs to local highway exits. [quoted image][quoted image]

Oh my gosh. I love this and this brings back so many memories. My aunt passed away about 8 years ago. We used to go visit her every summer. She was right off exit 7a on the turnpike in Robbinsville.

Quoted from nutty:

After owning a Getaway for 20 years, I managed to recently get a High Speed the true game I played in the late 80`s.
There is something about the game I am not sure about or maybe comparing to the Getaway.
Its the multiball feature when you run the red light into lock mode. Shot up the ramp it locks a ball in the left then you have to get the ball up the ramp from the shooter lane twice to get full 3 ball multiball.
These are my queries
1. If the 1st shot fails from the shooter lane the multiball kicks in with only 2 balls ?
2. Sometimes the 2nd ball to lock from the shooter lane goes into the same lock on the left again cancelling the 3rd ball and only giving a 2 ball multiball ?
3. When you have 1 ball left the jackpot chance immediately cancels ?
4. I also see in the menu install easy - medium - hard what is the difference ?
Thanks in advance.

Congratulations on getting a High Speed! It's such a fun game!

1. Yes, that is the way the game is designed. You have to manually launch the balls for multiball and if you mess up, then you just have a 2 ball multiball.

2. When the balls both go into the same lock on the left side, is the ramp diverter causing that to happen? If the ball doesn't have enough speed, it can go down to the left lock without the diverter triggering. If the diverter is triggering early, then you may need to adjust the switches.

In addition, most people recommend a stronger plunger spring then the standard (which is just plain metal, no color). I'm using the "red" spring, which is the strongest available. You can get them from Marco or Pinball Life. Pinball Life has a little chart with the springs listed from weakest to strongest and their colors. This will help ensure the ball makes it up and around the ramp, reducing the chance of it falling down to the left lock.

If you are having problems with the ball not lining up well with the ramp, you should be able to adjust the trajectory by moving the end of the right side rail of the shooter lane.

3. Yes, that is correct. When you return back to single ball play, the jackpot shot goes away. Fortunately your progress in advancing the jackpot value carries over to the next multiball until you claim the jackpot (or shut the game off).

4. There are several settings that can be changed to make the game more difficult. Some have to do with how long shots stay lit (like the freeway shots) and settings change whether you get a stoplight target on ball plunges or not. I think there's a couple of other settings, but I can't remember them off hand. The manual does a good job of explaining all the different settings and options for changing the difficulty.
