Quoted from j_m_:I'll field this one since chris missed it. if going "whole hog" on cleaning up a transformer, I tend to remove the old brackets, screws and insulators and then start by wire brushing the transformer block. afterwards, the varnish covered paper and wires are taped and papered off and it's painted with a semi-gloss black
depending on how much varnish is stuck to the brackets, I will let them soak for a while in a paint stripper to remove it, tumble the brackets and then use new nylon screw insulators, screws and kep nuts to re-assemble it
