Quoted from RickyBobby1:

Genius! What rivet tool do you use? I got "yelled" at for using pop rivets on one of my plastics and I need to correct it to save face.

I do a lot of riveting on the ramps I make....10's of thousands rivets installed. I use two methods to rivet the ramps. The first is a Rivet Press as shown by HEP, although I position my dies opposite from what he has (Support die on the bottom and the roll over die on top). The press is great for a lot of work, but there are times when the rivet press cannot reach some rivets. In those cases I use a handheld roll over die. See attached link for a video of me using the hand held roll over die. 1st post on this page...

JodyG here on Pinside sells a great rivet starter kit which includes the hand held die on his website rampomatic.com

Quoted from mmr61184:

Nobody makes the smoked topper anymore either. Marco has some leftover repro stock from a company call Blaird? I think they said not sure how accurate it is to the original though. PPS has some left but not sure who makes theirs. Starship used to make both but he doesn't make anything smoked any more anybody know why.

Colored PETG used to be readily available. These days, to get colored PETG requires an order of several thousand pounds which makes it cost prohibitive for making ramps. The only way to get colored PETG now is to dye it, which is what I do for the colored ramps I reproduce.

Quoted from High_End_Pins:

It’s lame when a parts provider says that.
It’s not economical to make the parts correctly or accurately?
Not shitting on Larry at all he’s always solid but it’s just hard to understand how that works.

Wow...

Quoted from sfspanky:

I got my smoked topper from Pinball Inc. believe they make them for Starship Fantasy and Planetary along with a ton of other plastics
https://www.pinballinc.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=188

I took a look at that smoked topper on Pinball Inc.'s website. It is actually made of polycarbonate (Lexan). Polycarbonate is commercially available in clear, white and smoked. Polycarbonate can be vacuum formed, however, it is more difficult than forming PETG. Polycarbonate can absorb and retain moisture. Vacuum forming is generally done by heating plastic to around 300 degrees. Water boils at 212 degrees. At 300 degrees, any moisture in the plastic will create bubbles. To get around this, the plastic must be maintained in an oven at around 140 degrees for like a week to purge all the moisture prior to forming.

Even if this problem did not exist, I would still prefer PETG over polycarbonate for ramps.

Quoted from pinballinreno:

I have an NOS smoked topper, that I bought 20 years ago, going in my current resto.
What is it made out of?

Honestly, no idea. One thing to remember about plastic is that is does age/degrade and get brittle over time. I would be more concerned about an NOS ramp than I would a topper!
