Looks like a better quality cabinet but I guess we will see when you start.
Does your local guy use Cnc or is it done by hand?

Quoted from High_End_Pins:TAF cabinet wiring is complete.
That looks nice and clean.... really digging the black wire clamps.
Your lucky to have a spare for dimpling....My first playfield swap about 8-9 years ago was a IPB EBD no holes or dimples.
Luckily i only did one screw up with a drill and was covered.
Best to get as much clear done in a setting as you can
That’s the way I do it too
I hate just clearing one item
Just for the record I have done a few machines with powder coat rails, ramps, and wire forms and as I have sold off the machines I have done but I still have one and it’s been Almost 3 years and no wear or ball trail yet. Keep in mind this is home use only.. could be different in a routed environment.
Cosmo i was thinking the same thing or Chris must be working late tonight.
Im with #1 as well but #5 gives me the tingles as well but i guess it depends what colour cap your going with.
Quoted from AUKraut:I may have asked this before (or someone else has, so my apologies): I have a hard enough time figuring out/remembering which screw/bolt/nut went where when I take out 1 or 2, how do you do it with hundreds of screws/bolts/nuts/washers/posts on a pin that you have no experience on??
I used to try and keep stuff organized but now i just throw everything into a container and sort throiugh it when i repopulate.
After you do a few you will know what screw goes where and different screws used between different manufactures. But you always want to have pictures for reference if needed.....still comes in handy for some posts and and to get the right posts needed where plastics go.
Another great restore Chris!
Quoted from High_End_Pins:Quick trip across the border.
Does this mean they are illeagal in certain states? Just curious as i thought it was just Canada in north america that couldnt buy them.
Quoted from High_End_Pins:hanks. I am so disappointed these days with the quality of the parts we have to choose from.
Plastic sets that can’t hold the art
Flat lifeless cabinet art
Coil wrappers that don’t stick even as well as a postage stamp
Screws that snap as soon as you screw them in
Jet bumper lamp sockets that fall apart as soon as you try to put a bulb in them
Jet bumper bodies that disintegrate into a dusty powder after a couple plays
Flipper return springs that snap in a week.
I so hear you on this.
Quoted from High_End_Pins:I wanted to convert to Phillips in place of the flats originally used.
Great idea. I hate working on gottliebs with flat heads.
Great to see you take the time to get it right.
It really is alot of extra work when dimples are not correct or missing....especially if you dont have an original to work off.
Im finding these aftermarket playfield mfg should worry about the quality of dimpling just as much as the quality of clear and printing process.
Chris your cab work is excellent.... the paint lines and how well your masked bottoms come out are great.
I also noticed there doesnt seem to be branding but stickers of playfields lately....why? i liked the branding idea
Quoted from flynnibus:He mentioned before branding+painted surfaces did not work well. So he uses stickers when the target is painted and branding on naked wood.
Ahh ok i must of missed that but makes total sense.
Good call on those.... I was thinking the same thing on last 2 I did but didn't have the guts to do it, well and not enough enough parts on hand lol
Quoted from High_End_Pins:The mans autistic. He has quirks and verifications go a long way
Great idea chris!
Chris, Do you do your own nickel plating? If not do you have to get all the parts cleaned & buffed first or do they do that for you?
I looked into some kits and it looks easy enough but that doesn't mean it is lol.
I had the same question Wally had, That was a very brave move but good to know it can be done.... I would have been like nope need to get new set of decals lol
Quoted from High_End_Pins:Really defeats the purpose of the connectors.
Ya that is different ....I would like to hear Sterns story on that one.
Haha too funny
I remember a picture of me I believe in 3rd grade with a kiss shirt. I wouldn’t of let kids go for school picture in a rock shirt now lol.
Good idea Chris....while your at it figure out away to hold up playfields as well
I have to say HH and Black hole are a pain when you want to look at something quick especially if its under bottom playfield....it becomes a job when your in and out of one these machines a few times in a hour.
Quoted from High_End_Pins:walking like a pimp just
Well i guess that's a good sign of healing. Two Pimps in the community now hmmm...
Quoted from High_End_Pins:I decided kind of at the last minute to put the shaker in it
I think that is an awesome idea if it interacts with the engines.
Quoted from mikepmcs:him grab that sanding block
I thought this was very cool....my process has been trim first then sand later but after seeing this process i will have to try as it eliminates the trimming process all together except holes and such. And sanding the leg holes ....brilliant!
Chris what grit are you using? ....i use 220-400 but looks like you are using something quite a bit coarser.
Quoted from Fifty:Your pic of the ball trough threw me off there
I had to do a double take on that too lol
Quoted from High_End_Pins:I drilled it for 44 style sockets(smaller)
Good idea ..... i notice the wedges have been hit and miss for availability for the past few years and expensive compared to a 44 socket.
Hi Chris,
What is your method for splatter look? I have a couple to do for the first time and have been experimenting but so far for my self i feel the toothbrush is going to be the safest method for me. I have tried the low pressure method, bigger spray hole and half pressed rattlecan nozzle but they all seem like a bit of a loose cannon to me, But first time trying.
Quoted from High_End_Pins:It’s something I do out of feel and technique not something I can quite put into words .
Thanks for the reply, well if i end up doing more of these in future i may have to get some more info on tip size(that's what she said).
For now it will be a slow and pain full tooth brush method on the first 2.
Ha ha get used to it Curtis but a swig beer always helps for a breather.
Merry Christmas Chris, Curtis and your families.
I love seeing the machines out of the mainstream being done. Looking forward to Knockout and Centaur as it sounds like these will be custom one-offs.
Care to share any tips or tricks on clear coating. Everything you clear besides playfields seem to be a one and done for you.
How do you get it so good every time on first try ...or are you just showing us the after pictures lol.
Sometimes on cabinets and other stuff i will luck out and have to not touch it but most times it will require sanding/buffing a blemish or 3 or 8.. out
I'm sure it is because you are a master at this! I wouldn't mind seeing a video of you clearing a cabinet and doing splatter/webbing as well for us masters in training at HEP class.
Where do i leave my class fees envelope?
Quoted from davjoszie:That's like saying to Pavarotti, "Teach me to sing like you."
true!
Quoted from High_End_Pins:Playboy cabinet is painted the base white and cleared.
Wish my floor looked that clean after painting ...must have some really good ventilation.
Just curious ....is there any benefit with that flooring or just wanted something softer to walk on or is it to preserve concrete/wood?
Quoted from High_End_Pins:That flooring is a covering used to make a floor static free
Ahh didn't even know they had such a thing. Thanks for the reply
I am so jealous of how your clear looks....do you add anything to it? .. does using a slower activator help it smooth out? I have always went with medium but now kinda has me thinking slow and steady wins the race.
Whose a good looking dog...whose a good looking dog ....Maverick is!
Quoted from Mr_Tantrum:I can't watch this commercial now without HEP popping into my head
Ha Ha i hear you
Really looking forward to C37 as well....I have had one in my personal cue to restore for years now. Unfortunately i think it will still be some time before i get to it.
Quoted from High_End_Pins:Wow! It is seriously a piece of junk cabinet wise.
Ya she's a little rough for sure.
Quoted from High_End_Pins:C37 cabinet primed and guidecoated.
Been looking forward to this one as well.
Will there be any HEP surprises/maintenance mods or will it be kept original?
Quoted from High_End_Pins:C37 up on four legs
She’s looking hot!
Quoted from PinMonk:Now that you have the pink matching
Hmm I would like to see this after playfield is in.
Ohhh very nice delivery day … love all that hardware and wire. Can’t believe I’m excited over this lol ohh and the beer is good too.
Yes keep them coming, best consistent thread I have in my favourites.
Keep the pins, food, beer, family, health, Reno’s, household appliances and dirt bikes coming and whatever else comes into the shop for an improvement.
Quoted from Tophervette:How did you get such clean holes in the plywood?
I use a forstner bit and drill press with a a backing/dummy board in behind and works good for me.
I like that blue. What do you call that colour?
Despite the initial condition it looks to be in decent shape mechanically.
Quoted from Kawydud:have you tried a set of these from Mantis?
These might work good on radcals?
Quoted from High_End_Pins:Lawn chair for a workbench
We all have to start somewhere.
Yes great video. I have come across this quite a few times in decals. Never would i think of sanding it down though, good to know it can be done.
Yard looks great....im sure the body is feeling that work.
Quoted from High_End_Pins:Prepped and final cleared the Kiss cabinet 60/40 gloss for that one.
Looks great again Chris. I like that you but the runners on the back of cab...just makes sense on these older solid states.
I need to invest in a good weight set specifically to hold decals, i like the square bottoms on them
I'm digging the 2 tone. Is there many games you have done 2 tone?
Happy Birthday Chris!
I think the lane guide colour combo look great especially with touch of black screws.
Quoted from remf:happy to see IJ didn’t blow up when you turned it on yesterday.
I gotta kick out of the facial expressions
You can just whine about it or get to work.</
Totally get this and glad I learned at an early age. Very frustrating when I give someone a job at x amount of dollars and they complain and walk away and sit at home for the day and miss out on 4-$600 for the day then complain they are not making any money.
Quoted from High_End_Pins:The game I was most resistant to restore was this woodrail. I knew it would cost a lot more than normal
I remember this game as well… it’s nice to see you do these one-offs.
Quoted from GCS2000:I have always wondered what is the game you have redone that you said WTF why is someone spending all this money to restore
I come across the same thing and I find it’s usually a sentimental value to the customer and I understand it cause you get to hear the story behind why they want to do it.
Happy birthday Marshall
Crazy how much they have grown over the years… feels like I just joined pinside a couple years ago lol. Time flies
Keep them coming Chris.
This is hands down my most enjoyed thread on Pinside and look forward to seeing what you're up to all the time.
I may not chime in chat that much as I'm a quiet guy but i look at this thread pretty much every day even check in 2 or 3 times a day to see what's new.
keep it up ....ohh and i enjoy the videos just as much.
Gilles
Quoted from High_End_Pins:The consistency of MDF there is important or else you might end up with ugly knots
Ya i hear you on the consistency & knots ....hard to find a perfect piece of plywood.
It amazes me how you get these old bottoms so clean looking on old/used cabs.
This is how i see it when you deal with a dirty bottom.
You...No problem I'll get that clean & looking new again (in Positive voice)
Me....WTF happened here and what is that, how did it get so dirty, they putting their drinks in here, how am i going to get that clean (in super whiney voice) screw it ill just replace it.
Quoted from flynnibus:I like the laser precise staples
I know eh ...looks perfect, nice and square, not crushing/denting the card.
I can never get my stapler dialed in to staple paper properly, its never consistant.
Chris what's your trick or what stapler you using to do the paper cards?
Quoted from High_End_Pins:For paper and plastic I normally use a manual stapler.
Ok added to cart...dont seem to sell those staples on amazon, box stores here so will try with my #4 1/4" first and see how that goes.
Thanks for the info...sometimes its all in the tool/brand that makes the difference.
Quoted from High_End_Pins:and slotted screws.
Yes get rid of those damn things.
