Quoted from High_End_Pins:

A few more hours in this one.
These are a massive amount of work and detail. Lots of technique goes into shading the lettering. The most difficult part is consistency from one side to the other.

Quoted from High_End_Pins:

ES cabinet is cleared for the first time. Full gloss on this first one.

This ES original repaint / stencil job is of a different level.

Quoted from High_End_Pins:

Me either. Firewood.
I have had some with some minor issues but that’s the worst.

Of course, I’m always expecting to have to tweak or fix some minor issues. Most trying to get new cabs, think they are just slapping paint and decals on, it’s just not a simple turnkey process for sure.

Quoted from High_End_Pins:

Since we are talking about cabinets.
I am about to prep my current TZ project cabinet.
Here is where that starts. [quoted image]
What am I looking for?
Flipper button holes [quoted image]
Not deep enough [quoted image]
Front button holes
Too tight. [quoted image][quoted image]
Leg bolt holes.
Too small
[quoted image]
Blow outs
[quoted image]
Structure.
Gaps
[quoted image]
Brad holes. [quoted image]
Is it reasonably straight [quoted image]
That’s the lower.
[quoted image]

These look all par for the course and beyond acceptable, as long as you get them at this stage spotted now. I do feel that without the right amount of experience, 99% of the people will get caught finding some of this stuff (aka FT hole you caught for me) out after decals are put on and then there goes your perfect cabinet and decals right out the window. It could be blocking that needs to be added or subtracted, or maybe the playfield glass doesn't slide in properly once they've already installed glass channel, double sided tape and their new brass rails ... lol

Quoted from High_End_Pins:

I settled on a consistent barber pole stripe [quoted image][quoted image]
I also try to avoid overlap in inventory due to gauge only so if for instance I really need a 18 gauge red/green for a solenoid I will use a red 18gauge with a 20 gauge red/green since the need is much more frequent for that color in the lamp matrix than the solenoid.
This allows me to have everything that is truly common and wire color correct at the source but avoid the space and expense of rare but occasional needs.

wire rack.... pure pinball restoration sexiness at it's finest !

Ohhhh painted ES Cabs ! Bring on the sexiness

honest question...

I know we are using absolute perfection as the measuring stick. BUT, here goes my honest question is, how far off is the quality when comparing to the original cabinets that were thrown together in the 90's.

Recently had someone comment on how poor the back of a backbox was on a game I had. Little did that person realize it was a perfect original back of a backbox, it just had a very poor grade of plywood used which had tons of imperfections and 'original' pockmarks.

These new cabinets being produced are a godsent to save possibly thousands of games and they just need some elbow grease to get them install ready and look 'original factory quality'. And yes, they do need some polishing up to even get to that point but really not 'that' much.

What you are doing to the cabinets is well beyond factory original quality and I'm not sure many people here are completely understanding how to evaluate these comparisons fairly. If that makes sense.

As you mentioned, I'll sand, fill and polish well before I'm dealing with 9 fingers the rest of my life .... lol
