Quoted from High_End_Pins:

Time to set up the BSD base game.
This game looks like a turd even without unpacking I see numerous signs of problems.
It was said to have been restored.
We covered the issues with the bottom earlier. [quoted image]
It has black powdered coated trim too bad it is the wrong lock bar.
[quoted image]
Always a bad sign when they come with parts and instructions from the “restorer”[quoted image][quoted image]
Apparently installing this in the Fliptronic 2 board will stop the game from doing stupid ball searches when you boot it up. [quoted image]
Not sure about that but if it were true why wasn’t it installed? Certainly easier than installing decals and having trim powder coated
I am excited to see what we are dealing with here.

Would love to know if true! Mine does the stupid ball search when I boot it. Lol

Been following your work for many years, Chris. On your website and now here. You are truly gifted. LOVE your attention to detail. Wish I had a game with the HEP treatment.

Busy Saturday.
I started working through the BSD plastics.
They are a mix of originals and repros.

The originals are beat and old. The person that went through the game just swapped the easy ones.
The problem with the repros is that they scratch way too easily. Just like a lottery ticket.

I have an NOS set I have been sitting on for a while and will use them on this game.

Like with most lazy plastics and decals, the color matching is SO BAD. I hate that. Why do a repro if you don't make it faithful to the original colors?

#4905 4 years ago

Then started working through the coils.
These are just beat. This game is one of the worst type of examples where someone throws some decals and powdercoating on and calls it restored. They just want it to look like it was in pictures or from the outside.
I remember when the game was listed for sale and people were cheering it on and pumping it up

This continues on and on BSD. There are lots of mechs on the game.

Today we are doing this in the same pot.

It was pretty good.
I busted up all the lobsters and vacuum sealed the meat for tomorrow’s meal.

Still have about 2.5lbs left of cleaned and shell free tails and claws.

Now I have to make some selections for tomorrow.
Only Curtis and I drink.
I look through my mini beer cellar. Also known as the lower kitchen cabinet

The big bottles look inviting but I really like a variety and still want to maintain a roughly two or max three drink limit. I like strong beer pretty much exclusively but I don’t want to get wrecked

I think Curtis and I could have a pretty nice birthday flight with these. They are all heavy hitters but it still nets roughly 2.5 beers each.
So I label them and put them in the fridge

Man, the art on those repros is bad. Looks like someone did that freehand. I would have been a very unhappy customer.

Wonder who was the maker of the repro plastics.?

Quoted from chad:

Not sure. There are so many places making things it gets tough to pin down. I know there were a few runs of CPR plastics that scratched easily like these. I ran into it on a Taxi I did a year or so ago but I don’t think CPR ran BSDs.

No matter who made them they are a welcome alternative to a broken or trashed set but would need to be covered with Mylar on the underside to keep screws and hardware from scratching them.
I can get past some of the color and art issues if desperate but that durability issue is a real concern if you don’t address it during installation.

#4914 4 years ago

Happy Birthday Chris! Hope you have a great day tomorrow. Looks like you will be ready for it.
Amazing the skills and work that goes into all your restorations. Also documenting in detail here for anyone to see and learn something. Blown away by the end result of all your restorations!

Pretty sure they used autotrace or something like that. Even freehand wouldn't be that bad. The telltale is the very thin lined bits got missed completely (below the trace threshold) while the slightly thicker lines became WAY TOO THICK on the repro due to the tracing. Really poor worksmanship, what's for sure.

happy birthday chris. thank you for taking the time to document your restorations AND answer pinsiders questions. thank you for all you do for the hobby. and take a day off for once.

Happy Birthday Chris!

Can you tell me if you have restored a 'sample' Spirit?

I have 01012 S (apparently the 12th of the 12 sample Spirits) and am curious to know if the Mirco playfield set is compatible? I am not sure what the difference was with the sample but the manual does state that it is 'for all Spirits without the S in the serial number'.

Thanks.

Chris is restoring my spirit which is a sample. The spirit pf's are the same. Owned a regular production Spirit which had an identical pf set.

The only differences I noticed was the S on the serial numbers on the cab lower and head along with the boards in the head.

#4921 4 years ago

@Multiball33, that is great to hear!

I have the trifecta (Spirit along with BH & HH) and now all three have PF sets available. I would love to have these restored. I need to create a savings plan...

Thanks guys.
I slept all the way until 9 this morning.
The first thing I wanted to do for my birthday is to do all my favorite physical activities.
It is a beautiful day not too hot yet.

Thanks for the heads up.
We didn’t drink the Fosters or Budweiser. We boiled the lobsters in those.
Although I did take a sip of each out of morbid curiosity.
After doing so I actually felt even more sorry for the lobsters

Enjoy your day and lobster feast!

Happy birthday, Chris! Thank you for sharing your excellent work process here. I've learned a lot through following your thread. I hope you keep it up. Have a great day. Here's to another trip around the sun for the heppest man in pinball restoration!

Your fitness tracker, what kind is that and how does it work? Do you have to tell it what you are doing or does it detect it automatically?

That’s it. I pair mine with a polar chest strap for the best accuracy. The watch does pretty good on its own but has a hard time with some activities where your wrist bends often like weightlifting or circuit training.

Dang! That looks good!! I'd need a good nap after a feast like that, too.

Who works for Nike in your family?

And the pineapple [quoted image]

I thought she was pineapple tenderizing the steak for a minute there.

someone needs to get mama some pure vanilla from mexico. I had a buddy pick me up a 48oz bottle of the stuff (which was only $6). I've given people 4 or 8oz here and there and it still took me almost 2 years to finish the bottle!

We made it through another birthday.
Thanks to everyone for the positive vibes and interest in my day.

I have made it through all the BSD coils and coil harness

BSD is a beast in the mech department.

The mechs themselves were largely hacked and assembled incorrectly
It got so bad with a few of them I had to break out my serious documentation. 5707B561-F145-4CEE-8072-09D6FDAEFF94 (resized).jpeg5707B561-F145-4CEE-8072-09D6FDAEFF94 (resized).jpeg

Got everything straight though.

After a short break from the era I am also ready to start staging up a couple more Bally SS rebuilds.

Time to get this Radical cabinet to a position I am happy with.
I have been slowly laying the groundwork and each step takes me a little closer but it has been way more challenging than anticipated. Mostly because of color match issues and crazy patterns out of the norm.

First I must sand it again.

Did that.

Now a little detail work in the sanding department.
Clean up the bevel and the bottom of the floor.
