That other stuff brewing in the background I have a TOTAN that I need to complete before the snow starts to fall in Buffalo
The cabinet is painted and playfield clear so I can bring the game in to see what I have to work with.
Missing a chock so it has the gangsta lean. image (resized).jpg
Cabinet is trash and probably was from day one with so many voids in the plys so close to the surface. image (resized).jpg

The other stuff is just icing on the cake

It amazes me when I see lock bar holes added to cabinets that came with lockbars from the factory. The operator needed to use his own janky one instead of the nice factory one provided by Williams? Jeez.
That’s one of the roughest cabs I’ve seen in this thread.

Quoted from TomT:Never boring! Best thread on this site hands down.
Best thread by far on pinside! Second to none.
Quoted from High_End_Pins:Not sure how much longer I will continue because it has gotten so long and potentially boring but here we go with another week.
Hopefully not boring to you; definitely not boring to me! I look forward to this thread every single day, and learn something almost every day as well. Hard to believe I don't have to pay for it, but as the old saying goes, "the best things in life are free."

Completely agreed.
What really stands out here , other than perfectionism and great amount of attention to the smallest detail , is the cleanness of the area you work !

These are good I guess.

I can't speak for anyone here, but for me, this is my favorite thread on pinside. I'm in awe of not only your talent, but what is possible with these restores.
Quoted from High_End_Pins:I think I have made it a full year with this thread.
Not sure how much longer I will continue because it has gotten so long and potentially boring but here we go with another week.
If we're still here and engaged to the point we're discussing how much we'd pay for live cam access to your work shop to watch in real time, you are anything but boring to the pinheads in this thread.

Second that!
I've been sick the last few days, stuck in bed I've gone back to page one and flipped through every page of this thread, super inspiring stuff. The extra time it must take you to document in here no doubt takes away from making money, but it's really appreciated from our end. If you have the time and energy to keep the thread going, I will happily keep enjoying it.
Can I ask a few questions?
I'm currently stripping my Quicksilver to give it a full resto. I'm sending off the cab to a trusted restorer but everything else will be done by me. I have a Mirco repro playfield, would you suggest clear coating it? I've heard some aren't willing to touch the Mirco's due to it's clearcoat. I know the lamp housings can be problematic in the older Sterns, are their anything else that you would automatically replace to improve reliability? Also, I'm wanting to add connectors to all mechs and possibly GI where needed. I'm able to find 4pin molex connectors in bulk reasonably easily, but 2 and 3 pin connectors, not so. Any tips? Thanks again. Love your work!!
Time to set up the BSD base game.
This game looks like a turd even without unpacking I see numerous signs of problems.
It was said to have been restored.
We covered the issues with the bottom earlier. image (resized).jpg
It has black powdered coated trim too bad it is the wrong lock bar.
image (resized).jpg
Always a bad sign when they come with parts and instructions from the “restorer”image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
Apparently installing this in the Fliptronic 2 board will stop the game from doing stupid ball searches when you boot it up. image (resized).jpg
Not sure about that but if it were true why wasn’t it installed? Certainly easier than installing decals and having trim powder coated
I am excited to see what we are dealing with here.
Gotta come out of the woodwork to add my voice to the encouragement to keep this thread (or another just like it) going. Easily my favorite place to land on Pinside on any given day knowing I'll learn something, be entertained and not have to trudge through petty bickering. Thanks for providing it!
Taking a look inside
Rough board set but exchange/serviceable from what I can see without removal.
Opened up the playfield.
Comes with lots of parts and instructions. Good thing I have no idea what to do here

Nicest looking part of the game won’t use it though. I do not like powered subs on these games personally. Usually sounds worse than the factory set up to my ears.
Factory speakers or the upgraded non powered version is more than adequate. If going Pinsound then it is a different story. Not big into that either though.
Looking at the underside of the playfield.

Glad to hear it.
The latest Mirco playfields I have received seem to have an unusually soft clear. Even after setting a number of weeks you can still dig your fingernail right in there and leave an indentation.
What I am doing with them is stripping them down as far as possible through sanding to remove as much of this soft clear as possible and then reclearing with my own to give s better hard shell top coat.
Have no idea what the issue is there but I can confirm I am seeing this soft clear on the more recent playfields I have received.
On most games of that era I like to replace all lamp sockets, line cord ,varistor and line filter.
Some games are pretty rough so I like all new coils on those and of course sleeves. This is mostly cosmetic and done so I am not revisiting mechs after the build is done during testing.
The Molex assortment is well represented at Mouser that is where I buy mine in bulk.
Had to go to the orthopedic doctor today.
This knee has been tight and swollen. It actually started at my calf but then graduated to my knee.

Did xrays and the Dr told me my knee actually looks great for my age and that I have plenty of tread left on the tires
Likely just a minor sprain in the joint and that is what caused the lower leg swelling because it can impede the fluid exchange.
Good enough for me !
Cleared to get some more strenuous activity. Still no running though

Please keep it coming - and again, THANK YOU for your contributions here!

Fliptronics 2,has been tinkered with including removal of the elusive and problem solving C2
These two are exchanged for cleaner serviced boards. The Fliptronics 2 board will have the C2 populated but that is a hit and miss thing and shouldn’t have had any real impact on the workings of the game.

man.. that BSD is the poster child for "stop calling installing some new parts a 'restoration'". I feel sorry for the folks that paid people to do this kind of work.
Obviously not everyone is doing HEP level work.. but be honest in what you are doing. That's not even a 'refurbishment' let alone 'restoration'.
Thank god HEP can fix up these disasters quicker than the rest of us and get them back into circulation
