Quoted from High_End_Pins:

Thank you Skip. I really appreciate it. Often I feel like I should have went a different way with this stuff and stayed in the automotive side but the freedom and flat out coolness of pinball has been pretty rewarding over the years.

The nice thing about what you are doing is you can work from home. That is hard to do when painting cars or even motorcycles. Just that has plenty of perks but beyond that it is kind of a hobby turned business so as long as you love it why not keep doing it. I just hope your customers realize what a great job you do with these machines. The price point of doing things the way you do them eliminates a lot of people that don't really care anyway.

Keep amazing all of us! You give the guys trying to do it themselves plenty of inspiration and at the same time share just enough of the tricks of the trade for people to continue to learn from you. I know I'll never own one of your machines but I still enjoy seeing your post everyday. I am more of the "rat rod" type guy when it comes to pinball machines & like to see some bumps & bruises on them instead of a fully restored machine but I can still respect what it takes to bring a machine to the level HEP does.

But as I told you when we talked in person the thing that amazes me the most is how you have everything down to a nice easy system. Organization is one of the things you do better than most of us and the organized attack helps you accomplish more in a day than most of us can accomplish in a week. Totally amazing!

I’ve been casually into pinball playing and collecting for sometime, but really got serious about five years ago. I’ve heard about some of the other high end restorers have come and gone for example, I understand Jim McCune did some outstanding work, but is now into classic cars.
Chris, I hope you’re here to stay because I have plenty of games that need your special touch.

With Spirit 1 in the books I can now better tackle Spirit 2 and then 3 then 4

Both 2 and 3 are incredibly rough.
The need to really break them down even further than 1 is way they are done in the order they are.
I needed to completely familiarize myself before diving in even deeper.
The issue with these are hacked wiring which I will cover and address later and even more troublesome major corrosion and surface rust.
This is an issue on everything from the coil brackets.

The worst of it to deal with looks to be the coin door.
It took quite a bit to break that down.

I found this in there.

Even the brackets that secure the upper playfield will have to be dealt with.
So all that is broke down and heading off to plating.

These are the most satisfying restores. Take a near basket case example a cool, rare game and transform it into a masterpiece. Can't wait to see the before & after.

#4756 4 years ago

A 20 cent piece. I have a couple of them in my wallet, we don't do quarters.

#4757 4 years ago

I am now also ready to enter the next phase of the Radical restoration.
The need/desire to save the current cabinet art put a much more complex spin on the project.
I am gutting it now.

Often people will comment how nice the cabinets might look based mostly on if they are faded or not.
When it comes to fade I can say it is nice but the condition around the legs is a problem.
This is another thing you hear sometimes how an original cabinet is better than a decaled one.
It is a possible debate if you are talking about a true screened to wood cabinet but on these that are screened to vinyl anyway it is really no different with the exception of a well decaled cabinet with proper protections will hold up better.
Here are the challenges on the lower cabinet to deal with.

Dealing with wrinkled vinyl but still trying to save the art it is one of the biggest challenges of doing this work.
Without a doubt stripping the cabinet and decaling it would be easier but the lack of quality decals makes this repair process necessary.

First thing that needs to happen is to cut away the bubbles because it will never be level or solid with them there.
Everything that is puckered is shaved off.
There is a definite art and technique to it do you do as little damage as possible yet still remove the problem spots.

The leg wrinkles are carefully filled and sanded.
This is a tough move because it only makes more work for me and opens the door for some future compromises since I can’t possibly perfectly match every color and detail but it is a needed step to make it solid and durable.

Like most blue games of the era the inside is a different shade of blue than the outside.
My plan is to better match the inside to the outside.
For now it is just roughly sanded clean. Not detailed yet. Too much work ahead to waste time on that yet.

Just roughing some foundation colors in for now. When I get closer and a more perfect surface I will make a real effort to color match but for now I just want to lock something down that is close enough to use under the future repaints.

Bluish shade is purposeful dark so it will act as a good base for both the blue and black.

Some yellow work just roughed in. The idea is to get it solid and just better off than wrinkled or bare filler.
Hopefully tomorrow I will get a chance to plastic prep it and clear it.
From there after it cures it should be much more workable and I can start dialing in colors and art. Neither will be perfect but as long as it is kept to a minimum at the leg locations it should be a reasonable trade off or alternative to stripping and decaling.

Quoted from High_End_Pins:

[quoted image]
Both 2 and 3 are incredibly rough.

Nice job and amazing work as always Chris! Is Spirit 1 mine? Your work and ethic are second to none. Well worth waiting for. Know system 80 Gottliebs are your least favorite working on next to ems. Thanks again!

#4767 4 years ago

Thanks Rob.
Spirit 1 is going to the west coast.
Yours is in the mix it is Spirit 3.

They are done in order of conditions and timing of funding.
Spirit 1 was in the best condition and funded first.
This is the game I completely gutted and had the cabinets made off of for all Spirit projects
It also is the cabinet that I shipped down to FL to have stencils created from.
Using the best example possible to do those things yields the best results.

Spirit 2 is in worse condition than Spirit 1 and was funded second. It has the advantage of not needing the down time #1 had because the cabinets, stencils and playfields are already in place now as a result of my legwork and outsourcing on #1.

Spirit 3 is in the worst condition and the latest to be funded. Like #2 it will benefit from the process of #1 without the down time.

The reason they are done like this is because once I work through the better condition games I am most familiar and equipped to handle the worst ones.

When funding is collected it pays for new cabinets, stencils, paint, playfields, plating, coils, lamp sockets ,etc etc.
These are the things needed to both have in hand and also have ready to go before I actually disassemble the game which is why it is called a teardown payment.

Hopefully that is insightful and not at all specific to just these games but many others that require this much extra effort and outsourcing.

With the Radical cabinet brewing I also need to set up some more straightforward cabinets.
The next step for Radical will actually be primer on the non art portions. B1C091FF-A3DF-4868-9E79-D29B3872F028 (resized).jpegB1C091FF-A3DF-4868-9E79-D29B3872F028 (resized).jpeg

The other cabinet to prep and prime will be a TOTAN.

Long day on the Radical cabinet.
I decided to actually try to get the basic blue and black scheme knocked out before I do the first clear. That being the case I wiped off the passing attempt I made yesterday in order to best see the designs underneath.
The blue on the outside is impossible to really match because it is such a thin layer of screening over white that the white shows through.
I wasted a bunch of paint trying to match it then wasted time at the paint store letting them take a shot at it. They actually did worse than me even with the computer so I did feel a sense of vindication and went with my own mix
Don’t even ask about that neon orange they almost laughed me out of there with that one
Anyway here it goes

Looking pretty promising. I will of course have the yellow and some other repairs coming up but not a bad place to work off of compared to where I started.

Really nice color match!

Evidently the impossible, is possible at HEP !

#4776 4 years ago
Quoted from High_End_Pins:

Mask
[quoted image]
Cut [quoted image]
Spray [quoted image]
Unmask
[quoted image]
This was done on each corner in the blue and black areas.[quoted image]

What's that transparent roll you use for masking?

Sure. Make it a big brother type setup where you have 4 camera views (two overhead pointing straight down, and two at angles and you pick the view you want. Sounds like the genesis of a TLC streaming show once he gets the kinks worked out of the production with us as guinea pigs.

Next I started prepping my next Harlem Globetrotters cabinet.
This one was a disaster but I was able to salvage it.
So it was sitting in my nice climate controlled shop for a couple weeks just like this with an apron laying on top of it.

When I moved the apron off it to start prepping it I couldn’t believe my eyes.

WTF!!!!!!!
Never have seen this before. Ever!!
I immediately reach out to my cabinet builder and he offers to build me another.
I think to myself I can probably just fix it so let’s see what the problem is.
I pop the bubbled top veneer off and it becomes clear what the problem is.
Certainly not the builders fault just a flawed piece of wood that somehow made it into this cabinet build. There were no obvious signs from the outside.

I filled it with fiberglass first. This will solidify the wood

Sanded that after a couple hours and felt good about moving forward. 31EB6591-EBC2-476B-9202-72DAC2A45428 (resized).jpeg31EB6591-EBC2-476B-9202-72DAC2A45428 (resized).jpeg

Then I discovered another issue.
If I wouldn’t have already put the effort in on the front I would have scrapped it but.
The top plate of the neck is too thin.

Now I can start prepping the Radical cabinet for the next round of repairs and repaints.
First to sand the lower.

The hole in the front in now filled and I will start working on the repaints.
These continue to become more numerous as I make repairs and corrections.
I know I will be changing the yellow stripes with the fluorescent paisley pattern because I just can’t do that with my methods and skill set but we will see how it evolves as I go.

I didn’t have the patience for the Radical today. Have to be in the mood for that type of work and it is a bit too tedious for a Sunday.

I think I have made it a full year with this thread.
Not sure how much longer I will continue because it has gotten so long and potentially boring but here we go with another week.

The HG2 cabinet has dried overnight and is all set. No need to do anything else to it paintwise.
This person wants a real stock style build complete with a working Susan B Anthony coin mech.
That being the mentality the paint work is just right as is. Not too slick for a purist but still leaps and bounds nicer than the factory.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
Playfield should be all set as well. I was hoping to avoid reclearing it at all for this more factory style build but there were just too many flaws to overlook even though it was a “gold”

Quoted from High_End_Pins:

... says the guy with the best thread on pinside. Sure, there's not a lot of discussion, but that's because it's like talking during a great movie, or playing candy crush with the volume on at an orchestra performance.

The Radical cabinet is on hold for a day or two.
I found someone that may be able to match the fluorescent shade so I am going to leave the head with him today and see if he comes up with a reasonable match for me to use.
The need to fix that hole in the front is really making a decent match mandatory.
When you have to deal with these types of jobs it is really time consuming and frustrating.
Doing the work itself is one thing but trying to overcome the obstacles outside of my control like lousy/no decals. Impossible color matches. Crazy art schemes that can’t be duplicated through my process are just really hard to absorb into the workload as a whole and still maintain production or even close to similar price points to the everyday projects.
That stated this wouldn’t be much of a restoration service or very interesting though if all I could do is decal cabinets and swap playfields.
