Afternoon workout complete
HIIT today.
Short but effective when time is low.

Afternoon lunch and rest are out of the way and I get back to projects.

IJ edges are sanded.
The alignment is as good as it gets
The goal on these is to line up the blue and red lines not covered by the legs.
Ideally you would like to line up every single bit of art but that is not possible on these.
The alignment is great here
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

But not here
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

The factory is similar though

Quick trip to the warehouse to pull another project. This one needs to be done this month.
Looks like October will be heavy in the DE games.

Tommy, awesome! Never got around to restoring or even thoroughly shopping mine before I sold it, so I'm looking forward to this.

I bet that one still has the blinders. In all my years of addictivley searching for an original pair of blinders. I have NEVER seen one pop up for sale on ebay and don't recall seeing one listed on pinside.

#356 5 years ago

After checking the Grand Prix cabinet in the sunlight I decided that it was still just a little too glossy for my liking. Also I just can’t ever talk myself into accepting those hard stencil lines no matter how hard I try.

I sand it down and prep to clear in a slightly lower gloss this also dulls the stencil edges so I can sleep good tonight.

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
#357 5 years ago

Recleared with a slightly duller ratio.
The biggest advantages will be the elimination of stencil edges and a little more appropriate gloss level for the era.
I do limited amounts of EMs so I am always tweaking things when it is something I am less versed in.

Inspirational, for sure.

Changed that.
Then put the side decals on IJ.

I see that was the only one to thumbs up you for this post. it was for the progress on the IJ (not your tire changing skills

Next up today will be prepping The Tommy playfield.
I have an NOS but it is not fully drilled or dimpled.
There are also Mylar sections to remove.

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
#364 5 years ago

Mylars are pulled using the freeze spray method.
There were several but this is the largest one FB91A8F7-AB07-4838-BD87-C59599C6FEF0 (resized).jpegFB91A8F7-AB07-4838-BD87-C59599C6FEF0 (resized).jpeg

Now I can drill and dimple.

A previously replaced Tommy playfield is perfectly aligned and clamped over the new playfield. 96C94B8A-EBD8-41B8-976F-718730443D93 (resized).jpeg96C94B8A-EBD8-41B8-976F-718730443D93 (resized).jpeg
This is done by triple checking several alignment points.

#369 5 years ago

Tommy playfield is prepped by lightly sanding with 600 grit and a red scotchbrite. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

The shooter Lane is just a little rough or grainy but the art is a bit too close to get too aggressive with sanding that.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

One small tweak I will make is putting a slight bevel on the commonly worn hole pictured
Sharp edge holes like this are just not durable regardless of coating. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

This is carefully done with a dowel wrapped in sandpaper image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

Bevel is complete.
It isn’t drastic but it looks correct and gives at the very least a little more durability to the edges of the hole.

Playfield received a few minor touch ups with a brush in a tiny spot or two.

Now ready to clear image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

Now that the hard stuff is out of the way for today
The beer choice is easy image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

The IJ is brought in for teardown.

I will need the cabinet parts to start assembling the new cabinet and I need to get my hands on the playfield also for rework.

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
My two primary goals for it are getting my hands on the playfield and the cabinet parts so I am cleaning the wiring as it is removed but not getting to focused on other aspects that I would normally if I already had a playfield ready to go because I will have time to do those things as the playfield restoration unfolds.

Concerns to address are as follows.

Scratched insertsimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

Ground in dirt.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

Poor color coverage or fading. I am pretty sure it is a coverage issue since the other colors are vibrant.

Typical wear
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

Minor insert wear and ghosting.

This temporary table is the biggest eyesore and concern this morning and holds the obstacles for getting the room reorganize and back in orderimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

So, these assemblies are bright and shiny. Are they new replacements or are you polishing the metal assemblies on a wheel?

Then onto the Grand Prix playfield for a bit. The underside is rough

Grand Prix is now ready to reassemble.

The metal has been tumbled for several days.

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
#399 5 years ago

Rebuild begins.
It is important for me to assemble a playfield like this at least the initial parts while the clear is still flexible.

The reason is there are several wire guides and nails that have to be tapped in and the current cure state of the clear helps make that far less likely to do any damage
