The playfield is then pulled out of the cabinet and left to dry down just a few in the heat before I bring it back in and blow it off with compressed air.

The cabinet is flipped to drain.
There is only one or two things I need out of that so I will pull those out and bust the cabinet up for the dumpster.

What chemicals are you spraying on, and are you letting it sit on the parts for a certain amount of time?

Wish you were closer. Can always use cabinets like this. Seems such a shame to bust 'em up but I understand you can't save everything.

As crazy as that "hose the whole game" method looks, it's genius. My least favorite part of tearing down & shopping an old game like that is my hands turning black every five minutes from the grimy old parts. Hate having filthy hands so I'm constantly washing them during the job. Then when I'm done my fingertips are black for days.

I know some of these games you really have to prewash them.

I got what I needed out of the lower cabinet. 1CA451B4-3C4B-48A5-BB83-56A148B1AB24 (resized).jpeg1CA451B4-3C4B-48A5-BB83-56A148B1AB24 (resized).jpeg

Then I will sit down with and go through placing all new zip ties and connectors.

Now I can replace things like the line filter, flipper button switched and power switch.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

I will also create some subassemblies and install a new power cord

HG gets a new power switch.
This involves color correct wiring and double short/lead protection F0DC42DD-2700-468C-97DF-1F0C1BDCB958 (resized).jpegF0DC42DD-2700-468C-97DF-1F0C1BDCB958 (resized).jpeg

Now it has a plug and can be neatly routed with the added real estate.

Hosing down the whole assembled game is 100% a Hank move.

#4360 4 years ago

Same process with the button switches
These get caps to lower the arcing.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
The idea is to keep them from turning back into this.

New cord line filter made up image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
Lower cabinet harness done and inventoried. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
Now I can start tackling the playfield.

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
#4363 4 years ago

New playfield is ready to build
I cleared sanded and polished it a couple of weeks ago or so.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
Nice thin slick clear.
Not overdone will make for the best possible player and durability.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
The inserts look more seamless this way. Not sunken(too little build material) nor mounded(too much build material)
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

Thus doesn’t mean inserts or material can’t possibly settle later it just means right now pre build it is as nice as it possibly can be and that what you are looking for and is all you can ask for.

Nitrite gloves.... not hoses

I've tried! You'd think a thin glove wouldn't make me the clumsiest person on earth, but it does. I can't even hang onto a screw.

Just about ready to flip the HG playfield and start on the underside.
All the metal has easily polished up thanks to the pre cleaning.
Going with red wafers on this one

I'd do orange pop skirts maybe to match the basketball if you aren't too far to swap. Might look good. Man, I love Harlem. One of my absolute faves.

I'm not sure orange would pop enough against the hardwood floor background of the most visible bumper. Loving red on this one.

Not tryin' to shoot you down, just thinking out loud.

I use either single lead sockets or dual.
In this case I am using single because of an overstock of them and running insulated wire in place of the bare wire threaded through solder terminals
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

This is done so the socket can be installed on top of the terminal and easy serviced.

I'm sure you've answered this before, but my search came up empty. What what solder lug terminals are you using under your lamp sockets?

HG GI is placed.I switch from staple down to screw down any and everywhere possible.
C5D15D7F-C3B2-4E2B-A800-44CB1786C0E8 (resized).jpegC5D15D7F-C3B2-4E2B-A800-44CB1786C0E8 (resized).jpeg
Each socket must be checked for interference before securing it. Sometimes directions or screw styles are changed with that in mind.
Here is an example.

This run of sockets are staples originally 0032BB30-5DD4-4CAF-856C-3D45ACB02B71 (resized).jpeg0032BB30-5DD4-4CAF-856C-3D45ACB02B71 (resized).jpeg
The reason is most likely that if the screwed down style were used the screws or leads could drag the playfield runners.

By making sure the leads are turned to the inside. 28EB3FC3-FDFA-47AD-877F-85DD637C1F67 (resized).jpeg28EB3FC3-FDFA-47AD-877F-85DD637C1F67 (resized).jpeg
Then using countersinking screws

I am able to create the run with more serviceable sockets but without the concerns noted.

Now I can start working toward loosening the main harness.

I will do this in sections and rebuild then place parts as they come off

During that process I will clip and resolder all connections for parts I am reusing like the roll over switches.
Removing the browned tubing and replacing at as I do. 10B1B5AF-CF97-49C9-8A8D-5A6DB9BA694F (resized).jpeg10B1B5AF-CF97-49C9-8A8D-5A6DB9BA694F (resized).jpeg

Connectors used where it helps servicing or rebuild.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
The beat coil assemblies are replaced and swapped with plated brackets.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
Parts once rebuilt and reworked are then placed.

As I place the roll over actuators I swap the 1/4 inch hex heads out for mini Phillips.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
The reason is that those hex heads tend to drag on the actuator wire as highlighted
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
This is a much better way to attach for two reasons
1) you easily clear the wire when installing or removing with the mini Phillips image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
The hex forces you to compress the actuator and in turn possibly tweak it it image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

2) no clearance issues at all

Working through the switches and placement
First the hardware needs to be blacked out
Doesn’t need to be great just black not rust 3E79FA98-3929-44ED-9AC0-65FD5C018BBE (resized).jpeg3E79FA98-3929-44ED-9AC0-65FD5C018BBE (resized).jpeg
These are place on a corner protector 767296A2-C297-4B0E-8D20-DC13068FBD03 (resized).jpeg767296A2-C297-4B0E-8D20-DC13068FBD03 (resized).jpeg
Then blacked out with metal etch primer. It gives a dull finish stand alone but it easily bites into and erases the rust in a quick step.
55F56A7E-3B83-4FFD-813A-CA98843C44B4 (resized).jpeg55F56A7E-3B83-4FFD-813A-CA98843C44B4 (resized).jpeg
Then to start mapping those switches out I am using a switch template
6FC5CA6E-1D38-4E0E-AAEA-BBA74C8170D3 (resized).jpeg6FC5CA6E-1D38-4E0E-AAEA-BBA74C8170D3 (resized).jpeg
This is placed on the switch I am locating 23DB7A6A-A222-4B06-9D1A-A5AFA962B2C0 (resized).jpeg23DB7A6A-A222-4B06-9D1A-A5AFA962B2C0 (resized).jpeg
Reason being the dimples are either non existent or really off/poorly marked
BCB01D99-5B3B-46C5-A50E-A3AF1FC5A836 (resized).jpegBCB01D99-5B3B-46C5-A50E-A3AF1FC5A836 (resized).jpeg
I line it up for maximum performance or fit
4F7FED6D-57D4-45B4-91FD-414DAF191D81 (resized).jpeg4F7FED6D-57D4-45B4-91FD-414DAF191D81 (resized).jpeg
Then take it away but leave the template.
EDE5BD15-C2B7-44BA-A790-2EF6D8C315F2 (resized).jpegEDE5BD15-C2B7-44BA-A790-2EF6D8C315F2 (resized).jpeg
That gets screwed in place temporarily
940FDD9B-DB83-4075-B53A-28C1A45F9B15 (resized).jpeg940FDD9B-DB83-4075-B53A-28C1A45F9B15 (resized).jpeg

It gives a much more accurate alignment and the holes easily accept the actual screws when finally placed. E054921E-2AF0-4282-A94C-F7369C6025EA (resized).jpegE054921E-2AF0-4282-A94C-F7369C6025EA (resized).jpeg

HG playfield wiring is complete. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

All switches were rebuilt with new tubing, fresh wire ,new caps and diodes with short protection placed on plugs individually or as sub assemblies.

The GI was completely reworked and reconfigured.
It also is all new with short protections and plugs per area.

Never found it necessary with a properly built and serviced trunk assembly but this last TOM came in with the board and it did work well.

The last two days I have been a little limited.
On Sunday night I noticed my left calf was swollen from the knee to the ankle.
Knowing this could be as simple as a muscle strain or as serious as a blood clot I waited until Monday morning to see my regular doctor.
He examined it and they did an ultrasound. No clot was found so that was good but I have to limit my standing, elevate and ice my leg a few times a day if I want it to heal quickly.
This makes it a little tougher to do pinball work

I rebuilt the transformer assembly on the HG.
This included a new board and making a new harness.

Now to build some coin doors.
I am going to build one for the HG and one for the special Centaur.

I put on my compression socks and will rest my leg on the bosa ball to keep tension off it.

Bad coin door skin from Marco
Just spotted this. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

The base won’t fit.
Lines up on this side. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

Not on this side. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

Here is the problem tabs on the right at in the wrong spot.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

I get so tired of this lousy parts situation.
I already returned this pair of skins due to scratches now this problem. Seems like there is just no QC anymore at all.

Are you able to break the tabs loose, then re-position and use jb weld or epoxy to hold them? Not ideal for sure.

The Meatmen has some good stuff as well as funny. Listen to We’re the Meatmen and you Still Suck”. All the songs are good. You’ll get a good laugh too.
