Quoted from Crispin:Hi Chris, please excuse me from distracting you from creating more pin porn but I have a newb question. I have a shooter rod made of Easy Flow 60 2 part resin that I painted with acrylic paints and I'd like to know what you suggest I should seal the paint with. Also which adhesive you would you to affix the head to the rod?[quoted image]
I would try a bit of spraymax 2k.
Its auto clear in a can, so perfect for small projects.
Hey Chris I was wondering....how much primer and paint do you think each cabinet and backbox receives? A quart, pint, how many ounces whatever?
And then do you apply whatever you mix whether it needs it or not to try not to have any leftover.
Thanks in advance!
Quoted from High_End_Pins:Coating over the acrylic isn’t something I am well versed in because I use auto paints and clears
Auto clear is probably fine for it though and really would hold up well to the oils from hands and regular use. I would try it out on something I didn’t care about first to gauge compatibility.

I think it looks awsome and very modern with a retro twist.
Thanks pinballinreno, perfect description of what I was shooting for. Different strokes, at least littlecammi feels strongly about it.

I like the shapes, have you 3D modeled for printing?

Oops! Then please just focus on the compliment I paid to your mummified head shooter rod.

Gutted the TOM base game.

It is worth noting that TOM is a game specific cabinet.
The details of that are important because the transformer is shifted over the left more.
CD06C643-334B-43E4-B576-7FF70F7F87A8 (resized).jpeg
The reason is if not it will hit the lock post coil bracket picture here
648DA13F-357D-4F9A-883E-909BCD77115D (resized).jpeg
Because of that the vent holes are located in an odd pattern.
2DB84EDA-7ACA-4E4D-852B-3BDE00EA9D3E (resized).jpeg
This also makes it necessary to recess and locate one of the transformer t nuts under the left skid.
Old TOM cabinet is gutted.
It is really a nice original so I will offer it for sale at some point comes as pictured with the trim, mirror blades and speaker. t. Lmk if you are interested.
Wiring the new TOM cabinet.
image (resized).jpg
The playfield build is just about complete and needs a new home. image (resized).jpg
That was pretty tedious over the weekend TOM uses a few coils that really set on the top edge of the playfield. These can easily chafe other wiring or get tabs broken off.
As a result I make sure to solder heavy and protect. image (resized).jpg
image (resized).jpg
This includes the lock post but that goes on later because the backboard screw.

It takes about 3/4 of a gallon to get three good coats on the head and lower inside and out.
The goal is to bury the wood grain. The first coat just soaks in that allows the next two coats to build up from there.
I would rather put any mixed primer on the cabinet than in the trash knowing it will mostly be sanded away during the straightening and prep process.

Wow that's a lot more than I thought. Great work on everything, like always. Thanks
Quoted from High_End_Pins:Playfield is in the ToM cabinet.
Quoted from Mr_Tantrum:I’m always amazed how quickly it appears you are able to restore these pins.
With this ToM restore the quick progress is almost like...magic.
Chris -
Question for you. Are these posts in real time? I was just wondering that as I was reading through the thread. I mean like when you clear coat, and every day there is progress, is that like stuff that you had done already, or is it as it happens?
Just a curiosity to me.

These are real time. Since I am always working on four or five games at a time I am able to keep things moving.
If the playfield is curing for one I can build another,if the cabinet is freshly primed I can sand and paint one I did the day before.

Thanks for the reply. That makes these updates even more impressive (if that were possible).

Coin doors are a pain in the ass. Back when I used to "restore" (I use that term lightly) old Bally games for myself, I'd do the coin doors and lockdown area first just to get it over with. Then it was onto the fun stuff.
Went to the warehouse and dropped the TOM off.
Grabbed the Centaur base game for the special Centaur.
I did not have a need for it until the cabinet and playfield was ready. 47C20ADE-A205-45E5-9666-577AE59A5565 (resized).jpeg

I noticed when I opened it up it was not quite as yellowed as I am used to seeing in the whites.

Underside does not have the gray coating. image (resized).jpg
My best guess is that these people did a playfield swap at this time.
The game would have be about 5 years old at that time. image (resized).jpg
None of the braid was restapled. Always neat to try and figure things like this out.

the playmate on the right of the bally playboy still reminds me of kitty (debra jo rupp) from 'that 70s show'
Quoted from timab2000:Hey at least you will know who to call if you need help repairing it.
True. I thought about how much harder it might have been to do a swap back then without a computer or digital camera.
They probably had a couple sitting around and just copied it.

This one is from right after they quit putting the wood stick bulb remover in the goodie bag. Ops got pissed and quit buying games over it. So Bally started putting the parts in again. Wood stick and black rubber tube. But quit paying someone to assemble it. Ops got their free thing again and life went on. Yours is a later unassembled one.

Explains how you're able to afford that expensive beer you drink and the rest of us can't afford!

Cool. I have done many of these older games and never seen it.Nice to hear the backstory behind it too.

I hear ya! We're coming up on our season for beers so might have some coming your way!
When I know I am replacing the cabinet, the playfield, the plastic set, line filter, all coils ,lamp sockets etc etc
I find it easier just to wash the entire game down as a starting point.
Only the lowers because the heads are a slightly different animal with the lamp panel, transformer etc by the time you break those down it is easier to go a part at a time but the lower cab and playfield there isn’t much there that will be reused.
That being the case I can really get out in front of the cleaning and polishing this way.
I know this might seem horrific but trust me at this level it is just a means to an end

What this has done is really given me a solid relevant jig to really work on cleaning the harness and parts I will rebuild.
The minor things like the switch blades and brackets really shine and these tend to fall apart if cleaned in the sink once unbolted.
