Quoted from spinal:

You have so much to offer your son and it’s great to see him work so hard. Inspiring! Thanks for sharing

I appreciate that.
When he was a kid I remember not wanting him to grow up and now he is an adult it is actually even better because it becomes more of a friend type relationship in addition to the parental one.

Tearing down the Radical.
I checked my reference points they appear to be from 2005

That being the case I trust everything except the post measurements.
I likely use a different ruler now so I will update those.
I do that with some tape and a marker.

Yeah. It is all about fluid management

#3705 4 years ago

More post sizes for Radical
This should cover them all. Might be useful in the future.

Thanks for sharing your post management technique. I always struggle with reassembly. This is great!

Quoted from fossmin:

This is worth noting as well. Some thread on spacers are #8s so you have to make sure you place the correct post with the matching #8 threads in the corresponding places.

Before I finish stripping the playfield I will neatly add correct color wiring for the wireform popper and top slingshot. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
I make a list image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

Then pull the wiring needed

The wiring that is missing from the head down is threaded in starting at where the added feature will be.
Once it makes it to the connector location it is clipped and inserted.

Head connections are made. The rest can be done within the inner playfield wiring via tapping or daisy chaining.

Connections are made for the solenoid harness
Not too much thought needed on the sling

Starting here I need to split the yellow and violet strand. I dont want to add a third 18 awg to this connector I made during the coil removal

Then use a smaller color correct wire to help them share the strand in a smaller footprint for the Molex pin
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

This gives a easier to manage set of plugs. FC158F08-A39C-4FC9-BC4B-EC894EA85DAC (resized).jpegFC158F08-A39C-4FC9-BC4B-EC894EA85DAC (resized).jpeg

Because of the fragile daisy chains I will just terminate the strands onto plugs and make new wiring throughout from there.

The plugs are keyed so they cannot be accidentally plugged into the solenoid harness B62DCA26-4F9D-4D89-BEE6-7415ACE90AB7 (resized).jpegB62DCA26-4F9D-4D89-BEE6-7415ACE90AB7 (resized).jpeg

Why you might ask
1)They are more fragile and brittle than the actual harness wire and will break off the lugs easily. Just a couple wiggles and they break image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

2)It makes lamp location and troubleshooting easier knowing the exact color combinations at a glance per socket compared to following generic color chains.

When removing these type of lamps it can be helpful to place small arrows so you don’t place them in the wrong holes at rebuild.

Lamp harness is now removed with all the upgrades done to the harness itself.

I decided to wait until I had that in order before picking the evening beer.
Picked this up on Father’s Day when I was in Richmond visiting my parents.

Now the switch harness. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
Each switch will be on an individual plug or a bank will be made of sub assemblies depending on wire color and locations.

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
#3723 4 years ago

This morning I start at the end of the Radical switch harness and will work my way back.

First is the trough area.
You have 4 switches one is mounted to a large plate which can be a pain to leave attached and clean the harness 8009AC08-30FA-40DD-8D55-5637E7E285D6 (resized).jpeg8009AC08-30FA-40DD-8D55-5637E7E285D6 (resized).jpeg
To drive just these 4 switches we have 11 wires. This makes it sloppy and redundant.
It is the act of chaining at the switch the single thing they have in common which is the green/red wire that is creating this bulk.

What I really need are just 5 wires.

BFA0D5C7-9304-4664-BDDC-2EC23F36E2A4 (resized).jpegBFA0D5C7-9304-4664-BDDC-2EC23F36E2A4 (resized).jpeg
#3724 4 years ago

The main harness is freed from the switches and condensed down to the needed wires on an individual 5 pin plug. 3D163017-7C32-4955-AAE2-D9CB5007BA68 (resized).jpeg3D163017-7C32-4955-AAE2-D9CB5007BA68 (resized).jpeg
Each switch is then wired color correct. This is done with a single green/red wire that is run in a neater pattern. F13D1E9B-5F6C-444F-BEEB-96404678D5E3 (resized).jpegF13D1E9B-5F6C-444F-BEEB-96404678D5E3 (resized).jpeg

This configuration is longer and can easily be routed in a cleaner and more trouble free manner

Now it is a sub assembly I can easily manage and frees the wiring up to better clean without the switch hooks getting tangled up.
This will be done throughout the entire switch harness

I’m really enjoying following a Radical restore. Is there a link to your process of building the ball popper assembly in the upper corner and the parts needed for it? I’d like to add these features back into my game.

I don't remember if you've mentioned this in the past. When you reassemble the ball trough on a Sys11 / early WPC game, do you check the slope of the runway so that the ball doesn't damage the baffle by slamming into the leading edge?

Busy morning
Curtis and I are now on the same days and lifts for the 5X5 some of our weights are getting closer so that is helping reduce so much shuffling around between sets

After that rinse and hang to dry.
I don’t need to blow it dry but can and sometimes do but this time of the year and with the non corrosive cleaner it is not required.

Just about done stripping the Radical playfield.
All that remains is remapping the GI and placing it on a harness.
I am going to do that before I remove it so I will be a step further ahead at rebuild.

Quoted from Gornkleschnitzer:

I don't remember if you've mentioned this in the past. When you reassemble the ball trough on a Sys11 / early WPC game, do you check the slope of the runway so that the ball doesn't damage the baffle by slamming into the leading edge?

I do check the alignment but often it will need a tweak or two later to keep it from ejecting to hard or soft.
Most of the time I have those parts nickel plated due to metal conditions like this Radical
Up until somewhere in the WPC era they have a extra guide or shim these seem more robust and less flimsy than the later ones.

Much of the metal will need extra attention.
These last two System 11 games have both had more than the normal amount of rust and corrosion.

Found some time today to work on the Whirlwind prototype cabinet.
It is very important on this project to keep it as original as possible.

That being the case there will be trade offs.
First the inside

I don’t want to sand it and lose the original overspray pattern so I use scuffing pads a vacuum and a tack rag to clean it without over sanding. 6865B834-FAB9-40DB-BC3E-EA21F9DC3E1A (resized).jpeg6865B834-FAB9-40DB-BC3E-EA21F9DC3E1A (resized).jpeg
