Pinball Life but I think it was actually done by Matt at Back Alley

Correct.

Had way too many loose playfields at my other workshops and not enough good ones at my warehouse so I have relocated my big playfield rack in my larger building
Will fill up fast.

Been working on organizing my playfields all day.
As I place them on the rack I evaluate and label them.
3F7C4D68-B325-4AA9-8A53-51F0F5C742BB (resized).jpeg

For example
This playfield never unwrapped.
3900ADF8-CD02-491F-8F74-0D1219300307 (resized).jpeg
I unpack and mentally note any flaws
CB98129F-5BE5-48B1-AB87-302602A3FF62 (resized).jpeg
I note the following mostly minor but important that the right playfield stays with the right project. 8A552DAA-2008-4B1F-8FD6-96E4017C56DE (resized).jpegFB212A8F-5660-427C-A7FD-79F894876118 (resized).jpeg7DDAD7B5-FDCC-4664-9DB0-43C950D1879D (resized).jpeg

I have all kinds of playfield s. This will likely be my last heavy playfield only restoration.
I like doing them but just can’t justify the time it takes. You just cannot earn even minimum wage messing with these things by the time you factor in time and materials. DA491A19-2DAD-4874-8525-D39A8A35C9B9 (resized).jpeg

Then there are duds where work has been done but you cannot seem to get paid.

Is that a stack of four Spirits I see there?

#3607 4 months ago

I greatly appreciate the side lessons such as the cost of the sandpaper disks, that is interesting to see and is a nice complement to all of the pinball pr0n.

Also, this quote from when you picked up the Scared Stiff really cracked me up:

“Owner was a cool guy nice and normal.”

Almost like it is a sigh of relief that you went to to see someone who has a pinball machine and they were actually normal, not some sort of whacked out weirdo

#3608 4 months ago

That LOTR looks beautiful! I always wondered why they left a big bare metal ramp down the whole right side of the pf... it just always seemed so incongruous with the highly detailed and colorful pf.

Very cool seeing all those PFs (especially the four for my pins!). Just a bit of money sitting on the tack!

Seriously looking forward to the day that es comes out the rack

Yes it is. I have more Spirits here now(4) than TAFs(0)
The cycles and trends of this hobby/business are always interesting.

Yeah. I have had some pretty strange encounters over the years picking up games.
One of the worst was about 12 years ago.
Back then my brother(RIP)worked with me and we drove 4 hours to pick up a couple games to be restored
Guy says “Easy move, money is no object ,pay in cash etc” and all the other things that you like to hear.
We get there the place is a run down mansion.
Inside there are games wall to wall.
There is a big fountain that is completely drained that has about a foot and a half tall knee wall covered in algae with several games set up in it.
There is a loud moaning coming from upstairs. It is someone in terrible pain it seems but the owner seems oblivious to it and makes no comment on the matter.

The guy says one of the games we are to pick up is in the fountain the other is in another room.

We wrestle the first game over the fountain walls onto a back deck.

I see nothing but a large hill going down the side of the property around to the driveway.
No steps,no walkway just wet weeds and a large sloped hill.
He says”You will have to carry it around”

He then walks away.

My brother says “ God dammit! You said this was an easy move now here we are 4hours from home at 2 o’clock in the afternoon at this F*****G!! House of 1000 corpses!”
Let’s take this thing back in and get the hell out of here!”

I am like “No I will just give you $100 extra dollars when he hands me the cash”

We then walk in to grab the second game.
It is in a back bed room my brother is motivated to get it out immediately and get back on the road home.
He quickly dives under the game to piggyback it out of the slot its in.
Just as soon as he does he darts back out and just starts pulling the game out by its front legs and says to me “200!!!”
I look closely under the game and there are piles of dog shit
We get the game out carry them through the weeds and hill. Load them up and go back in.

The guy that we are picking up from says the following
“Who do I make the check out to?” i.e not cash!!
He also ask enough other questions for me to know that money absolutely is an object and he will be hard to work with.

Needless to say it was an interesting ride back with my brother that day.

Ever since that experience I avoid pick up and drop offs at almost all cost.

The big question is, did it bounce?

#3614 4 months ago

Sounds like a good camp fire story!! Crazy man!!!

#3615 4 months ago
Quoted from Spyderturbo007:

The big question is, did it bounce?

No it was good but I remember having to cut every corner I reasonably could and save any part possible to get through those games and get them the hell out of here.
When it comes to the business side I learned a lot of hard lessons the first few years.
Still get thrown a curveball every so often these days but most of the time I can see them coming.

#3616 4 months ago

Weirdos in the pinball community??

Haven’t met any

I've been running my side business for almost 15 years and I'm still learning hard lessons. It's not as easy as some people might think trying to run your own business. My favorite saying is "The only constant in business is change".

Curtis hasn’t missed a day yet besides his scheduled rest day on Sundays.
It’s 5x5 lifting on Mon,Wed and Fri. His form is really improving.
HIIT with light weights, kettlebells or a ball Tues,Thurs, and Sat
Those HIITs are much shorter than the 5x5 days yet more effective at burning up calories.

Go Curtis! Any interest in joining the family business?

Quoted from lb1:

Go Curtis! Any interest in joining the family business?

Not yet. Maybe one day but he seems pretty happy at his job. He works in the shipping department of a book factory.
His girlfriend works there too. They have been there for a couple of years.
The place he works pays him better than I could as well.

When you are doing your touch ups like the one on Whirlwind I have linked, do you sand off the excess white that is applied, or is there some clear masking that can't be seen in the picture?

Had to shut my sanding and also paint room down one more time for what should be the final part of the renovation/upgrades.

All the walls needed to be freed up in the sanding/polishing/equipment room.

Busy day today.
Curtis and I did our 5x5 training together.
The music is improving. I did not hear one single trap beat or any of that.
Our days are not in sync though so outside of squats which is a constant there was a lot of plate and equipment shuffling. Made the rest time pass quickly though.

Edwins Medusa from back in 2016 came back in for a quick tune up.

305D4D4F-C088-411C-97FC-FE4D737065F5 (resized).jpeg
Didn’t take much.
The coin door was shorting on the trough switch when closed.
It turns out it was just barely touching a leg. Medusa playfields sit deeper in the cabinet than most others of the era and clearances are incredibly tight.
A clear washer under the resting bracket solved that without any major surgery or butchering. Sometimes the simplest solution is the best one. 71180F7E-D830-4506-AF2B-8DD75B3F918C (resized).jpeg

Other than that the two lights under the left flipper were not working.
Turned out to be a switch adjustments.
On Medusa. The flipper lights go off when the flipper is activated.
The zipper flipper EOS controls the cutting out of the lights.
Simple adjustment and they light up once again.

Thank you. I hope everyone that it applies to has one as well.
This meal is made to travel. Heading up to VA to see my parents tomorrow.
It is about 4.5 hours each way so I have to be ready to go first thing in the morning.
It is really important to me to do something nice for my dad on Father’s Day. With my parents in their mid seventies they don’t do a lot of long road travel so I am bringing the festivities to them.
