Quoted from meSz:Be interested in know your thoughts on the Mirco playfields Chris!
First impressions are that they look great.
Out of the four I received I don’t see anything yet that would warrant cutting them down and reclearing them nor reworks needed.
This tends to vary with all playfield makers it can be the luck of the draw often.
It is nice to be able to do that type of work when needed but ideally when you spend $800-1000 for a new playfield you really don’t want to have to the Hope is always that they will be worthy of install as delivered.
If not I am prepared to deal with it.
The first thing I am really going to check and scrutinize after cosmetics is dimple and hole accuracy.
Went back to check my bad black powder coated lock bar and no surprise the bubbles have returned.

Time to investigate.
Cut away at it and the issue is obvious.
They powdered right over rust.

Then metal etched.
Will let that set until I prime something and paint something else
This is another case where people might not understand how much extra effort it takes sometimes just get the most basic things in place for a build.
With the hardware in order I can now do the next sand, minor touch ups and clear on the WW proto playfield.
image (resized).jpg
Since it is a prototype I want to take a minimal approach and only do what is absolutely needed or will show once assembled.
I also do not want to do an overly thick looking clear because that too would defeat the look I want for this particular project.
Touch ups needed.
Back in the paint shop. WW proto playfield repaints are masked and sprayed with a minimal approach. 663AF49D-C710-48C6-BAD8-82C2DFD05890 (resized).jpeg

I will do the other stuff with a small brush and it should be more than adequate for this style project.
Nice playfields! I was thinking that if I were a manufacturer sending Chris (HEP) some new playfields, knowing that every detail would be photographed and commented on for everyone to see, I would scrutinize them just a bit more than usual.
Keep up the great work Chris! Love this thread and how hard you work to deliver and document only the very best!
Thank you sir!

I think the playfield guys do the best they possibly can but there are just so many things that can go wrong in everything about it from the process of making them, the screening or application of art,the coating, the coating and inserts settlements even the transport itself can be a problem when they go way up in altitude on a plane.
A piece of wood with a bunch of plastic lenses glued and pressed in it is just a recipe for disaster sometimes.
Next playfield to prep is the CPR TAF I did a few pages back.
I have let it set and now is time to do the final rework and clear1CB592FF-1744-4A83-A395-C1AA262EE339 (resized).jpeg
There is some graining still coming back through from clear absorption. This next clear should close that out. 5C42ABEB-5385-49DA-9D8C-0F0D53881620 (resized).jpeg575C1A74-B396-482B-AF00-AA9BB65BC636 (resized).jpeg
Once sanded and cleaned it also needs a couple of minor touches.

Just in case the NOS playfield doesn’t flatten out I am going to prep this one for my next choice.

Sanding helps give me an idea of the depth needed to flatten it out a bit.
I don’t think a sheet of glass is always ideal either but just a nice reasonable level will give the best of both worlds in terms of appearance and play. 9446B536-EE81-4E0F-8963-AE61FD3A94B1 (resized).jpeg

when you sand the pf and it goes all cloudy how do you get it clear again? how do you no how much to sand and not hit artwork? always amazes me and something I'd never dare do!!!
Quoted from russdx:when you sand the pf and it goes all cloudy how do you get it clear again? how do you no how much to sand and not hit artwork? always amazes me and something I'd never dare do!!!
The new clear application or polishing remove the cloudiness.
How much to sand varies from one thing to the next so you just develop an eye and feel for it.
Frequently scanning both the surface you are sanding and your sand paper as well is a good practice. If you spot even a hint of color on the sand paper or spot even a sliver of now missing art stop and inspect
Always better to sand not enough than too much if there is any question.
STTNG cabinet is cleared.
Loving the new paint room because I can switch from playfields to cabinets within an hour. The air flow is really good and balanced which greatly helps keep the jobs clean and allows clear to flow out nicely.

wish we could get hold of new cabinets like this in the UK id snap one up in a instant for my own earthshaker restore!
Chris, are sunken inserts (like the ones you just fixed) a sign that the wood was too fresh and should have shrunk longer before being cut into a playfield?
Quoted from spinal:Chris, are sunken inserts (like the ones you just fixed) a sign that the wood was too fresh and should have shrunk longer before being cut into a playfield?
I think the sunken inserts are possibly a sign of glue curing and shrinkage more than anything else but sometimes they pop up too so it is really hard to figure out exactly what is going on sometimes.
If you look at both the TOM and the TZs playfields I just did you see both popped and sunken inserts on the exact same playfield.
Opposite problems
We made sure Curtis got his workout in before going to work.
Another solid effort. FF5A80CF-6A61-42C2-9202-02B8959B1B3C (resized).jpeg
After that I had to run across town to grab the rare local restoration candidate. Traffic sucked. I now remember why I rarely leave my little 2 mile perimeter(home, neighborhood and warehouse)

Put it the warehouse 4FDE8E9E-5589-49F8-99C3-D5593323660B (resized).jpeg
That place is a wreck right now with all the new cabinets that came in and the arrivals since I have been back from vacation.
Going to have to tighten it back up got a Tron LE coming in tomorrow.
Quoted from yancy:You call that traffic?!?
Curious to see what you do with the Tron LE. Hard to believe that game is already eight years old. When I had one I played it so much that I had to shop it out twice, just in home use.
Oh, and if you need NOS ramps or Hallmark lightcycles, I know a guy.
I know my version of traffic is just not making a light on the first try
I am definitely in the market for some Tron parts so send me a pm.

Nothing special on this one. I did the silver one and that was fun.

I would really like to do a white and black one(white main color, black art ,red where originally red) but no takers so far.

Chris, it’s Richard. I believe this to be my Centaur. Go ahead and do the white Centaur color scheme. Thanks

Richard has spoken we will try the white black scheme.
If it goes well it will be one of one
