Quoted from TxJay:At this point Chris, can you do a MM restore in your sleep?
If I could any of them in my sleep MM would be at the top of the list for sure.
Building up the playfield.
This is a great thread. Really enjoy the workmanship. It is impressive how much you can get done in a week (and maintain such quality work). No doubt having the correct tools helps. The attention to detail is amazing.
Chris, I am curious as too how many hours a week you actually do pinball related work? You can't possibly do all this in a 40hr week?
I may have missed it, but are/were you going to do a small "session" explaining how you do decal edges (45 degree bevel, etc.) in more detail?

As a one man show and a small business owner it seems like every hour is pinball or business related.
The actual hands on part is probably 50 or 60 hours a week.
Only the cabinet and paint work really feel like work. The standing around wiring, cleaning, polishing and assembling are not too bad but a bit tedious on some builds.
I can easily watch TV,listen to the radio, drink a beer, take a break and get some exercise when doing that so it is better using my time wisely on the projects than just sitting on the couch doing those same things.

Quick update on the Kirk Perry games
I have been trying to coordinate something on that but the logistics of it are that they are offering me a third to do the following
1) Rent a large box truck
2) Drive 4 hours each way
3)Pick through and inventory everything
4) Move and pack everything
5)Transport back to my warehouse
6) Find buyers
7)Take responsibility for the inventory and conditions
8)Pack and ship to buyers
9)Send the other two thirds as I collect it.
I am not out to take advantage of anyone especially if they are in a tight spot but I just can’t see anyway this does anything other than hurt myself and my operation and so under those circumstances it has taken a backseat.
My hope is that they will become more realistic on the values of the games and effort needed to find them homes and get them to buyers but until then I just can’t put much time or effort into it.

I haven't been following much, Chris. Who's Kirk Perry? I take it someone with a collection they want to get rid of?
Quoted from Bryan_Kelly:I haven't been following much, Chris. Who's Kirk Perry? I take it someone with a collection they want to get rid of?
Bryan_Kelly , thanks for asking. I was wondering the same.

We draw the blinds to play naked pinball!!
Oh, and went with a set of Reese rails for my F-14 thanks for the tip on that one!!!
Got most of the blinds up was too tired for anything else after that

Now at the warehouse. The Special Whirlwind leaves today.

Hope to finish the MM up as well.
6E8AD26F-C8B6-42D6-9F93-70FC6D59AA22 (resized).jpegThis week we start our first of four Fathom builds.
Cabinet is already painted and ready for assembly so I need to get the parts out of the old one.
New HEP cabinet
image (resized).jpg
I will be using that to replace the current Big Time Cabinet.
image (resized).jpg
I think the BTC is nicer than the original but not built or finished well enough for me to want to build a game around it.
Issues I have with it personally are the following.
Floor is not recessed deep enough making it slip off of dollies easily.
image (resized).jpg
Very flat finish and grainy image (resized).jpg
Color choice is a bit drab
image (resized).jpg
No bevel on the lower edges makes for less durable edges that chip easily. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
These are just my own observations and criteria not an attack on the product but an answer to the obvious question “Why replace the replacement cabinet?”
Inside/underside is pretty clean
image (resized).jpg
There is corrosion. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
Coin door is a bit rough insideimage (resized).jpg
image (resized).jpg
And out. image (resized).jpg
So that is where we start.
This type of game is a tough one to deal with because often someone has paid a premium for a game like this based on the fact that it has a new cabinet and new playfield but the problem is that it is just that a new cabinet and a new playfield.
The fine details like metal conditioning, better lamp sockets and boards ,serviceability and more were not done so that would be the difference in this type of game and the game it will be once complete.
Quoted from heni1977:Wondering what you do for board repair. I am sure you got a guy?
This era I typically replace them. If not I use Clive at the Coin Op Cauldron.
One of the biggest differences in the BTC and HEP cabinet will be color choices.
Seeing them side by side can highlight that.
The BTC uses yellow the HEP uses green that is the obvious part. image (resized).jpg
The subtle differences are in shades.
The BTC uses a very drab navy blue.
image (resized).jpg
The HEP uses a more vivid blue
image (resized).jpg
The reasons for the HEP color choices and schemes are to properly match other parts of the game like the apron and back glass
Apron compared to BTC

Apron compared to HEP
image (resized).jpgYour shoddy workmanship never ceases to amaze me. Stop cutting corners by doing things the quick and easy way.
Quoted from PBMike:There is a show about anything and everything, I would definitely tune in to a show about Chris.
Hah yes, I watch a guy on youtube named steve1989 who does vintage MRE reviews (and so do others based on the millions of views), I would definitely watch a HEP youtube channel.
looking forward to these rebuilds
can you take a few close ups of one of the inline drop target set, more specifically the individual coils and switches for the controlled inline drops please
The BTC is headless now. image (resized).jpg
The HEP has its hinges.
Those were metal etched in black to overcome corrosion and mild rust.
image (resized).jpg
The HEP head is purposely set back about 3/16 to make sure the head folds down without indenting the lower trim of the face of the head.
image (resized).jpg
New ground panel is installed with the brackets.

I can feel myself getting fatter just looking at it.

Heavy beer!!

Not sure about all the ins and outs of these but here are the specs on the ones I use. These work in WPC games as well which is why I choose one in particular to stock.

Thanks. For my next restoration I'll pick yours because at least I know it's getting used a lot without issues. I picked up mine from Marco and I have no idea what the electronic specs actually mean, so fingers crossed it works as advertised.
Oh and damn nice Fathom. I just want to confirm: The hinges are your sweet-ass addition, they didn't come standard for these era machines, correct?
