Playfield is now cleaned and ready to start painting.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

I am going to go over the enormous files, programs and equipment needed to make this happen.
The custom paint mixing system. Whatever is in here is what I will mix and tint to match as well as possible. . image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

The high tech masking system image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

Morning fuel.
Coffee and water. I drink a lot of water. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

Quoted from chad:

Chris, what guidecoat?

It is basically light overspray on the primer surface to guide you through properly sanding the primer nice and flat.
Sand until gone.

#203 5 years ago

I am going to work from dark to light with colors so I will start with the darker blue.

Blue is masked and painted

The post locations in the blue are now redrilled so they don’t get lost in the process.

Red masked and painted.

Now unmasked. This really brightened up the cars which were a tedious cut x4.

#211 5 years ago

looks good chris

2 questions: you're just using frisket and freehand cutting it with a scalpel or x-acto blade to mask the areas? and blocking out areas where there is text on the playfield?

#212 5 years ago

The yellow is masked and then sprayed.
This is one of the harder task because Yellow generally does not cover well and there are many numbers to cut out.
Without the ability to cut and mask every digit it comes down to compromises between the aged paint and the new and how to best make those work together.
9261164D-6DAD-472C-AFF3-462238A4E0EA (resized).jpeg9261164D-6DAD-472C-AFF3-462238A4E0EA (resized).jpeg
The yellow is then unmasked. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

It is at this point that I really need to clear once again.
I anticipate needing to dial in some areas done today a bit further especially in the yellow.
On the next pass I will do that and other colors not yet done like the green, light blue, and of course the white

#213 5 years ago

Simply amazing Chris.

Playfield is cleared again.
Not perfect but much improved and should only get better from here.

Yes I use a stenciling material like frisked but it can withstand autopaint.

To cut it out I use just a regular razor blade.
I like that best.

#217 5 years ago

what frisket material do you use?

I have tried a few and nothing I like (may be my lack of skill, but may be the material?)

#218 5 years ago

Back to work.

Got two packages.

What are they?

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
#219 5 years ago

Package 1 is an Alien backglass/plexi.

Well that answers my earlier question..........

#221 5 years ago

Looks like the Alien backglass/plexi is the standard version not the limited version though so I am not sure if that is all that can be had(definitely better than a smashed one) or if there is a mistake but that was package 1 and the effort made is appreciated as well.

#222 5 years ago

Package 2
More backglasses.
Spirit !!!!!!

New Alien plexi is installed.

This is done using longer screws and some new but yellowed and useless post rubbers as a way to isolate and give s little suspension in hopes of not breaking during transit.

Closed up and checked.
Looks like the screen was not mounted properly

I did put it back in the original holes but I see the frame showing on the right so I will adjust that.

It isn’t the plexi that looks to be nice and even.

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
#229 5 years ago

Screen is moved over about 3/8 of an inch from where it was
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
That was actually a blessing in disguise because now we are anchored into fresh material not the old screw holes.
Alignment is much better now.

It occurred to me that the Alien and my Elliptigo are a perfect couple

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
#231 5 years ago

Alien is ready to pack up.
I noticed the wireform on the right had been marking the glass during transit most likely so I am protecting that.

Really like the step-by-step posts!

Do you spray white under your yellow coat? I can never get good coverage.

#237 5 years ago

Cabinet is gutted.
I will pop the rails and legs off tomorrow and it will be ready to strip.

Quoted from radium:

I know Yellow is pretty much the worst color to deal with
If I were painting one large single color surface yellow I would definitely put a light base of white or very light gray down first.
When dealing with a stencil or playfield though I just work through the lack of solid coverage by applying multiple thin coats even though it is maddening.
The reason for that is that spraying a different color first can create a halo once unmasked it could be sanded into during surface perfecting so it is best to have that pure correct yellow from the ground floor up in those cases.

Dinner is served.
A bowl of oatmeal, chicken, carrots, broccoli, avocado, and almonds.
It is all about nutrients.

Rails are off and I am ready to start getting the cabinet caught up with the playfield. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

Before I strip and repair it I will note the colors where I can in areas not previously exposed
That is going to just be white and blue.
All red has been aged
Not all that important just needs to look nice and be within the correct shades.

The framing of the head looks to be made of particle board so a fiberglass based filler is best used for the initial repairs of that.

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
#244 5 years ago

While I am sanding and working on the Grand Prix Cabinet I will also start prepping the IJ cabinet for final paint as well.

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
#245 5 years ago

Trip to the paint store to gather supplies to repair and paint the Grand Prix Cabinet.

These materials and paint do not come cheap.

$660 was spent just this morning and it doesn’t include the cost of materials already on hand like primer and sand paper.

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
#246 5 years ago

Head is stripped image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

Repairs to this type of material require a special filler

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
#247 5 years ago

The initial repairs are made using the fiberglass reinforced filler.

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
#248 5 years ago

First pass
Will require one more before switching to a normal finish filler. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

Sanding the IJ cabinet as I wait for the filler to cure for maximum efficiency.

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
#249 5 years ago

Second pass is done.
A different color hardner was used to differentiate the first fill from the second.

The true cosmetic repairs will be done with a finish filler after I complete the entire process with the fiberglass based version

Love following this thread. Can't wait to see it after its painted. Curios to see if you do clean edges with the stencil or rough / overspray edges like the original.
