I definitely would have rather watched Another State of Mind again than the first half and the halftime show.
Hopefully the second is better. At least it is close.

The come through here often. I have seen them once a few years ago. Amazing live band. Mike still has it even as he ages.

Ever think of a Bed, Pinball and dinner style week at HEP? I’m sure you would have a waiting list!!

#2409 4 months ago

I’d like to place a take out order on the HEP lobster rolls & fries!

#2410 4 months ago

I did my WW in a hammered silver. Looks like storm clouds and goes great with the theme and cabinet colors.

Dr Who is done.

Not sure if I will take it outside for final pictures or not.

I'm sure you have been asked this before, but about how long on average does it take you start to finish on a game?

WPC game reworking a repro playfield with new cabinet around 125 hours

Same reworking the original playfield and or cabinet probably 150

Bally solid state with stenciled cabinets, drops, all new sockets rebuilding connectors reworking repro playfield easily 200 or more.
Those are the most time consuming and most undervalued restorations there are.

Dr Who finished pictures.
Just a nice straightforward restore no fancy trim or anything over the top.

Like this eh? That's the beauty of Photoshop... 2 seconds later and you can see what it would look like instead of guessing.

I puked just a bit when looking at that.

#2423 4 months ago

Just to balance out that last comment, I want to say that it’s commendable that you try different things and are so open with sharing your ideas with all of us. Thanks Chris.

We should all remember that Chris doesn’t have to be so open with everything he does so, yes, voice your opinions, but no need to be dicks here. This is the best thread on pinside.

That is cool you can try out effects before hand. Sometimes things in your head look so much better than the real thing. I have been caught doing that with powder coating and colored GI (hence the troll forums I hate so much associated with both ). I am so used to seeing all black coin doors for so long that any deviation looks strange. But I always like to be different.

In photoshop, try a all black coin door with the orange pinstripe. In my mind that would look good too.

Or.....the classic design. Been fun exploring ideas, will be interesting to see what you go with! Cheers!

#2427 4 months ago

I vote for the black with the orange stripe.

#2428 4 months ago

Instead of coin door being a different color, why not just the lighted parts? I did this with my Shadow and tried a few different colors. I liked them so much that I plan on doing them on all my pins. I think the blue would look good. or cool white?

You have to get the clear coin plastics here: https://www.pinballlife.com/search.html?Search=clear%20coin

The more piece-y the coin door gets, the worse it looks to me. I don't mind solid blue for a perfect blend. Or classic black. Definitely agree with whoever said the coin door shouldn't be a focal point. Art should pop; hardware is a necessary wart.

#2430 4 months ago

The HEP logo burned into the playfield is a very nice touch!

#2431 4 months ago

How about chrome just for the coin entry and return plates? What color will the legs and rails be? If its stainless it wouldnt draw as much attention. I like the pinstripe on the blue door.

#2432 4 months ago

Just do a vinyl wrap on the coin door so you can switch it out every year

wow! really like the powder coat in your Metallica

#2434 4 months ago

How about the door frame to match the cabinet with the orange strip where you had it and a black door with black parts on the door. I kind of liked the blue to match the cabinet but it just seemed like too much blue. Going with the frame blue & the coin door black might make a nice mix?

#2435 4 months ago

those playfields look so much simplier when the cables are routed/tied up neatly.

Been working on my special WW apron.
Not cleared yet and being matched more to the playfield than the cabinet since it will rest there.
Definitely better than black.

#2439 4 months ago

Special WW apron cleared.

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
#2440 4 months ago

I based and placed this.
Looked nice and still in the vein of the original so I cleared it.
Will see where it goes from there.
Should dry down with less gloss and some texture.
Doubt it is the final but at the very least the basis of it. Just don’t want anything too busy.

Cabinet bolts painted tomatch the locations are placed.

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

The pivot bolts were based and cleared in the white then the gaps were just roughed back in with the gray.
Might take another pass or two to clean it up but at a glance looks nice.

Now that is attention to detail....top notch!

Tearing down the special Whirlwind playfield. image (resized).jpg

I am becoming a bit undecided as to whether I should restore the original playfield or go with a new one.

As is very common these look much better assembled.
As you get under the parts you find unexpected things like nails hammered in that should not be there.
image (resized).jpg

Wear under Cliffys (ok I did expect that)
image (resized).jpg
Raised inserts.
image (resized).jpg
Kickout wear.
image (resized).jpg

Blown out ramp screw holes.
image (resized).jpg

If needed or desired I can absolutely restore this playfield but the reality is that new when possible is usually a better long term solution.
I have asked the owner his preference and will go whatever route that is.

#2444 4 months ago

The old cabinet for the special Whirlwind is gutted of all useful parts.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

There was some creative wiring in there
