Quoted from High_End_Pins:

Thanks I understand and expect that or what might be better etc etc.
I have done all kinds of things like painting a brand new Mercedes ML 320 camouflage , ghost flames on a old vette,Centaur silver,Fire black and countless other things. All for hire and by request. Not one single time in any of those efforts has it been universally loved or hated. It is just how things go when you deviate from what people are used to.
There are lots of factors and limitations involved in both making the changes and what you can reasonably do also.
I enjoy it.

Chris,

As an old car guy I couldn't agree more. Again - just my personal taste on this one and as I said earlier that might even change once I see the machine together but at this point this is the first "chance" I have seen you take I didn't love. Knowing what it takes to do this type stuff from person experience I am always amazed with your work. I am just surprised it took this long for you to do one I didn't love.

I also agree taking those risk come with great rewards - but 99% of people just don't want to take those risk because they are afraid to fail. Again not saying this is a "fail" just saying it wouldn't be my personal choice. And after all we are on Pinside so sometimes we need a little debate in the mix of things!

Back to EBD for today while the Whirlwind and Spirit cabinets cure.
Those should not need much more than s level sanding and final clear application.

The EBD 2 Cabinet wiring is roughed in place.

I built up a new tilt panel but have not mounted it yet image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

The transformer panel is built back up.

All the boards are in the head.

The backbox lamp panel stil needs a few things. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

The light shields.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

A set of good displays. Hoping to come up with a nice complete original set for this build. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

Brackets and latches.

Whirlwind cab is amazing! Always something cool to see in this thread!

Quoted from j_m_:

what exactly is a "buss tap"?

It is required for the Alltek lamp boards if you are planning on running LEDs.

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

What it means is that we need to tie these two pins together.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

And tap the feature light bus
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

This was a clean factory like way of doing it compared to normal methods.

Quoted from russdx:

when you take the games apart and have a million bits and bobs how do you know what goes where when putting it back together? as many parts could sort of fit in a number of places? especially screws and bolts, posts etc...

Many of the games I do I have done several times or more.
Beyond that there is a lot of carry over.
For example a certain manufacturer will use a certain size or color screw for a specific purpose so much of it is just study and familiarity.
Anything I really think is game specific I will take a picture of.

Going to be a busy day today.
EBD 2 Cabinet is nearly completed as far as build up and wiring.
Mostly the coin door remains. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

Latest fish shipment just arrived so I have to stop and prep that image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

Once I do that it will be time to start the final prep and clear on the Spirit 2 and Special Whirlwind cabinets.
Hopefully I can get all that done before the midday workout.

Nah you have to use FedEx for the beer deliveries!

This is a fascinating thread. Thanks for taking your time and putting this together. You really present a good mix of your daily routine, snippets of family life and how your restores are going. Have you thought about seeing if someone would produce a show for HEP? I would be absolutely glued to it.

I don't think it would be out of the realm of reality, I just watched some vintage clothing character on netflix and am still amazed at what people are paying for thrift store clothes. Antique shows and restore show formats are well established and a pinball twist from a top tier restorer would really shine.

#1963 5 years ago

I've dreamt of doing a long-form slow paced documentary, with HEP taking a machine from delivery at his warehouse to complete and shipping.

It'd be 12 hours long and a single episode.

#1964 5 years ago

I am getting really efficient at the fish prep and vacuum sealing.

Today’s shipment was the more rare Ivory King Salmon.
I have a connection at the fish store and he called me to let me know that a nice 15 pounder just came in
The ivory king is a bit milder and more fatty. It’s color is based on diet it has eaten in its lifetime about 1 in 20 will be ivory but with the nature of fishing it can vary much more.

That has actually been presented a few times over the years and even by a actor I did some games for but those types of things tend to destroy families and businesses in the long run so.
No Maverick and I need our privacy and to have complete control of everything
We’d rather have our fun and freedom than money or fame.

Yeah. I got to see that one live and in person about twelve or so years ago when I did some games associated with them and delivered them personally by request.
My brother (RIP) and I got stuck in one of thier production or marketing meetings and it was one of the most uncomfortable experiences of my life.
You learn quickly that these are not happy or truly free people.

Special Whirlwind cabinet is prepped.

The only thing I really needed to deal with was orange peel and paint edges.
Both are to be expected on the first paint and clear.
9A74403F-7331-4FE6-ABA2-B8D0E6550ED1 (resized).jpeg9A74403F-7331-4FE6-ABA2-B8D0E6550ED1 (resized).jpegA8FFD1B3-D437-4AAE-A03F-B4644898E82F (resized).jpegA8FFD1B3-D437-4AAE-A03F-B4644898E82F (resized).jpeg

Sanding this down is similar to using the guidecoat.
The powdering of the clear helps direct me to heavy edges and peel.

#1977 5 years ago

All painted sides are fully smoothed and careful sanded.
On a paint job like this with numerous fades done by eye and feel it is essential not to cut through as that would ruin them. 2AC45721-1DC7-42AD-A62A-F30197D2AD03 (resized).jpeg2AC45721-1DC7-42AD-A62A-F30197D2AD03 (resized).jpeg5954B1B8-796D-4456-A0B6-B44748973C54 (resized).jpeg5954B1B8-796D-4456-A0B6-B44748973C54 (resized).jpeg

Now I can clean and mask it for the final clear. No repaints needed.

I will only be reclearing the painted sides not the face, backs inside

The cabinet and head are thoroughly cleaned. 5F827EC6-ECD4-457A-A96A-2AC126D22FA7 (resized).jpeg5F827EC6-ECD4-457A-A96A-2AC126D22FA7 (resized).jpegE471BD03-D81C-4347-81EE-CAAD3778861C (resized).jpegE471BD03-D81C-4347-81EE-CAAD3778861C (resized).jpeg658A0D96-A4AF-42DB-BC12-4B40BED83389 (resized).jpeg658A0D96-A4AF-42DB-BC12-4B40BED83389 (resized).jpeg

Now masked. The purpose of concentrating only on the stenciled panels is that this will smooth the painted edges but by blocking the plain areas and interior I am eliminating many sources of dust or small debri and also potential overlaps that could make heavier edges or runs. These final clear jobs must be error free because I do not want nor like the look of a sanded and polished cabinet. That also comes with risk of burning the paint off the sharp corners.

#1979 5 years ago

I will get my daily exercise then come back in and clear the cabinet.
This is a strategic move on my part.
If I clear it first I may feel slightly sticky despite being fully protected and it may knock the steam off the workout so I like to be set up for the clear but not drug down by it prior to.
Point being pretty much every move and step throughout the day is planned or thought out and it helps with the efficiency.

So your final clearcoat is not sanded at all, the final finish is just sprayed pefectly and not touched?

#1985 5 years ago

Final clear is sprayed.
This will come in at around 80 percent gloss once dried. Give or take 5 percent

Ok now the final clear on the Whirlwind cabinet has flashed off a bit.
That means while it is still very fragile it is also skimmed over and dust resistant.
This is the perfect time to carefully untape it so the tape lines will soften and flow back into the non recleared areas.

Removal at this time is crucial so the clear won’t bridge over the tape. 66D084D4-F81B-4B7E-9F1F-B434328B2FD4 (resized).jpeg66D084D4-F81B-4B7E-9F1F-B434328B2FD4 (resized).jpeg

If you don't mind sharing, how do you clean the powder from the cabinet before you clear it again?

#1989 5 years ago

The final gloss level of the clear on the Whirlwind cabinets will be more obvious tomorrow.
With the sun shining on it you can better see how vivid the colors are. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

That gray is used instead of black.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

I really like the gray. It looks more active and realistic than the straight black would have and I chose the yellow orange for the logo because it kind of reminds me of the sun above the clouds.

Quoted from NYP:

If you don't mind sharing, how do you clean the powder from the cabinet before you clear it again?

Blow it off with compressed air.
Wipe it down with solvents
Blow and a tack it off with a tack rag
Wipe it down once again with a tack rag no air.

#1993 5 years ago
Quoted from cosmokramer:

So your final clearcoat is not sanded at all, the final finish is just sprayed pefectly and not touched?

That is correct.
Sanding and buffing a cabinet would ruin it by making it too glossy.

#1994 5 years ago

One of the many things that take much more effort on a 70’s and 80’s SS Bally is the coin door build.

This is just a sample of the many pieces it takes to assemble the door itself. There is more to it than that but this builds the basic door.
