TAFTC is stripped of all needed playfield parts.
The rest of what is on there will be replaced.
This would be things like targets, rails lamp sockets.

is it just me, or has anyone else ever wondered why the side channels do not fill up the entire side of the translite glass? blocking the light would be a lot more effective if the channels ran the length of the glass on the top and bottom and just between on the sides, rather than the 1/2" gap that exists on the side channels

#1564 5 years ago

Typical bean counting probably Every inch saved in raw materials equals more channels.

You could buy three top channels individually and cut them to exact length though instead of the premade sets like I installed on that translite.

When making the pivot holes especially on the tilt only playfield games my preference is 1/8 back and down compared to factory.

The idea behind this is it will fit more forgiving coming to rest more easily in the lock bar receiver given variances than copying the factory perfectly.
Wood shrinks, expands, factories have off days and duds so this is a protection put in place.
Here is the difference it can mean nothing or a lot.
Back to front

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

Bottom to top.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

End result will be.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

It will have no bearing on how the game plays only how well the playfield and cabinet mesh together.

Odd stuff like this is helpful as I am setting up my own CNC files for my TAF build. Would TAF and a game like Funhouse have the same pivot location?

[quoted image]

Cool. Trust me if I do it or bother documenting it it is because it is important or something helpful.

Pivot holes can vary game to game so can blocking, chocking, back panel inclusion, exclusion length, bevels and lots more.
Cabinets are much more game specific than can be put into words.
If you are building one you really need an accurate example to copy per game.
There is a little carryover here and there but much less than you can see with the eye.

#1575 5 years ago

When drilling I really like the pin point accuracy of a forstener bit.

If you set that point right at your measurement intersections and hold it straight and flat it is going to be accurate.

Factory has a square shaped hole on the outside to account for the carriage bolt, hasn't it? Is there any downside to making it round? Like risking to have the bolt head turn as you tighten screw on the inside the and wrinkle the freshly installed decal. Ask me how I know....

Not that I have seen.
The hole made is smaller than the square of the bolt so as it draws in it there is no risk of spinning.
The square hole you see in an original cabinet started out round like these the bolt is what created the square which is why it remains round in the inside.
Main thing is it needs to be smaller than the square. Larger would be a problem.

There are four playfields coming out of the last lot
LOTR,WH2O,TAFTC,and EBD
That makes room for a couple more.
Those will be an NOS Airborne that will be used later in the newly arrived Airborne game.
Also a NOS BSD.

Neither are fully drilled or dimpled but I do not have a template for either so I will proceed with these knowing they will need to be carefully drilled and dimpled later.
The Airborne has some storage scratches and deep impressions in a couple spots. 72AB126E-FB8A-4CA9-B055-964274B5331B (resized).jpeg72AB126E-FB8A-4CA9-B055-964274B5331B (resized).jpeg

Quoted from j_m_:

is it just me, or has anyone else ever wondered why the side channels do not fill up the entire side of the translite glass? blocking the light would be a lot more effective if the channels ran the length of the glass on the top and bottom and just between on the sides, rather than the 1/2" gap that exists on the side channels

You can't get them completely flush without notching the back to not interfere with the adjacent piece. The backside is longer than the front. Thus, there will always be a gap, and they probably make one size to fit many. Remember, backglasses and translites all would vary in sizes. Stern has been uniform, but many before were not.

The decal wrinkles because the bolt holes in the decal were too small. Bolts when driven in twists the decal.

Quoted from jj44114:

The decal wrinkles because the bolt holes in the decal were too small. Bolts when driven in twists the decal.

They will also wrinkle/distort if the bolt is pulled in enough to deform the wood. The bolt head, not just the decal in the the bolt space, will work the decal just as much.

The motor reworked with better wiring then it is mounted to an old playfield and cycled with a nine volt battery.

Then the new customer supplied hand is installed.

I need a new opto board as well so I will button this up the rest of the way when I install it on the game.

Why are gear boxes packed full of grease instead of lubed with something like liquid teflon? Seems like it would be extra work for the motor to chew through all that grease, and eventually it dries out & jams. I'm sure there's a good reason since it's always been done that way.

Quoted from yancy:

Was liquid teflon available 26 years ago ?

Not to mention nothing changes on those gear boxes in 75 + years. They were supposed to last a few years and the whole game junked and replaced with a new game. They weren't building for collectors years later. It is amazing they last as long as they do.
