They are calling for possibly 11 inches of snow last I saw so today I have been shuffling everything around so I can stay busy and productive if we get hit hard.
This is not a area that handles winter weather well.
image (resized).jpgI noticed some carving in the playfield glass so in anticipation of some colorful language or something fun I cleaned the playfield glass.

After cleaning I am disappointed and would actually like the windex and paper towels back.
The scratching is either foreign or in need of a spell check.
I can make out nothing coherent only Rob.
I feel robbed so maybe it is appropriate.

TAF is now opened up. Earlier in the thread I removed the alarm system.
It is missing various things some I have and are hard to come by others are easy like flippers and magnets.
From an overall perspective I can safely say that I can make this a complete game again.
Turning it into a true HEP example is the fun and challenging part.

All games come in and ship from the warehouse.
It is the best place to intake,store,pack and handle the general public business side of things.
First I will prep the replacement playfield for the TAF and many others.
I like to do all my playfields in batches.
This is a CPR gold playfield.

It looks good overall I have installed four or five of them so far so I know what to look for and correct.
These will be noted by comparison to an original.

I also find this hole to not line up well with the original ball guide that has a post that goes through it.
That is the highlight of the things on the topside that will need correcting,enlarging or locating before it can be sanded and cleared once again.
None of these are a knock against CPR it is just my experience putting the part into use and having s game play well not just look nice.

The main problem I find with the CPR replacement is that the dimpling ranges from tiny pin pricks.

Often what dimples can be found on the CPR are off and would lead to things like crooked targets if followed.

This is a situation that carries on from dimple to dimple when you can find them
and requires double checking and correction or creation of all.

Any roughness created by this process will either be covered during assembly or corrected when prepping for clearcoat.
So do you just use a longer bit (1.5") and drill all the way through the old playfield? Into the new one? Does this ever chip the new clearcoat? Jeesuz that would stress me out. No wonder you drink so much beer!

The old is removed and the dimples are now much more obvious and usable as well as accurate.

Where the dimples were off you can get a better sense of how tiny the CPR dimples were I used a 3/32 bit to make the new ones.

Now the playfield can be prepped for clear.
Placing it now redimpled directly over another CPR gold highlights the improvement.

Ok Stupid question...how can you be sure the the CPR playfield (the actual artwork, not the wood) is lined up on the wood the same as the original? Are you worried that you might miss the mark if they are not perfectly lined up?
Next in the playfield prep department will be this Mirco WH2O set.

It has a pretty ugly clear application that is really hard to capture in pictures but basically if you look st the light reflection it has puddling and craters in some sections.

I go by the holes not the art.
The holes are what will lead to the best playing game.
If there are issues after making corrections they will be taken care of during the painting(if needed) and clearing process.
The next playfield we will be prepping for clear is the CPR replacement playfield for the second EBD

The reason I prefer not to mask and repaint the area is that it might be a really hard shade to match and it might create a 3D like look by having a layer of paint above the surface but we will see.

Instead of masking and repainting the entire loop which might look worse overall if the cut outs get to intricate it was simply color matched and minimally spotted in. Will be better than the smear and should be less noticeable once cleared and even more so once installed. .

The insert rollover is touched up to clean it up a bit.The issue is that it is overprinted out of round so perfection is trapped below the surface and therefore I just round it up as well as possible.
All should gel back together once cleared. The clear will clear up the insert like ghosting from the filing process.
It is a pain but must be done for a functioning insert rollover.

The spot in area is acceptable given the limitations and while not perfect looks better than the smear. I could have repainted the entire loop but that would defeat the purpose of starting with a new playfield unless the were unavailable.

I think in general whether it be NOS,Mirco,CPR,IPB or any other source there are going to be some duds in a run.
Just the law of averages.I don’t know the backstory on that particular playfield but it did have a less than ideal clear application for whatever reason.
For all I know Mirco could have refunded the buyer or it could have been disclosed etc I just fixed it is all.

I've found them receptive to updating their templates if they know it's a general issue. No one will doubt your # of cycles to validate your findings 
Since they are working towards small batch production for on-demand.. having these fixes rolled back into their templates would greatly help the future.
