Quoted from pinwiztom:

I really like the idea of adding those skid rails to the back/bottom of the CAB.
Is that standard for all your restorations?

I have been slowly moving towards doing that.
This was the first game of that era I have done it on and probably will on all others unless asked not to.
Packing that special EBD up now and taking it back to the warehouse.

Special EBD. Is back at the warehouse.

Loading up the next TAF.
Should be the last of my current TAF run.
It is the worst for sure. image (resized).jpg
Also grabbing the new cabinet and head. image (resized).jpg

Looking forward to closing out the TAFs and EBDs this month.

#1504 1 year ago

TAF replacement cabinet and head are unpacked.
These came from Virtuapin. Look very nice and accurate where it counts most on this batch.

What kind of wine you drinking?, unless that is a dark soda.
Can't be beer (Stout) since it is not Tuesday.

That is actually beer.
It does look like soda.

#1507 1 year ago

The TAF is in the ER.

They are calling for possibly 11 inches of snow last I saw so today I have been shuffling everything around so I can stay busy and productive if we get hit hard.
This is not a area that handles winter weather well.

image (resized).jpg
#1508 1 year ago

Yes the TAF pulled today is that TAF.

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
#1509 1 year ago

I shudder to think of the next few pictures of that TAF...

#1510 1 year ago

I noticed some carving in the playfield glass so in anticipation of some colorful language or something fun I cleaned the playfield glass. 2D1D1041-4EBC-40E3-AEA0-4E4DC9F5D28F (resized).jpeg
After cleaning I am disappointed and would actually like the windex and paper towels back.
The scratching is either foreign or in need of a spell check.
I can make out nothing coherent only Rob.
I feel robbed so maybe it is appropriate.

#1511 1 year ago

TAF is now opened up. Earlier in the thread I removed the alarm system.

It is missing various things some I have and are hard to come by others are easy like flippers and magnets.
From an overall perspective I can safely say that I can make this a complete game again.
Turning it into a true HEP example is the fun and challenging part.

It has been. Condemned to one month of hard labor at the HEP prison camp.

Special EBD. Is back at the warehouse.

Why does it go into storage? Is it for sale now? I don’t fully understand the warehouse…I thought it was filled with games customers sent just waiting to get started.

All games come in and ship from the warehouse.
It is the best place to intake, store, pack and handle the general public business side of things.

First I will prep the replacement playfield for the TAF and many others.
I like to do all my playfields in batches.

This is a CPR gold playfield. image (resized).jpg

It looks good overall I have installed four or five of them so far so I know what to look for and correct.

These will be noted by comparison to an original.
Wire guide holes left inlane.
CPR
image (resized).jpg

Original image (resized).jpg

Same area right side
Lacking wire guide holes and post holes too small.
CPR
image (resized).jpg

Original image (resized).jpg

Most of the post holes throughout the CPR are too small. So I will highlight that overall

Other missing holes are in the ramp area
CPR

image (resized).jpg

Original
image (resized).jpg

I also find this hole to not line up well with the original ball guide that has a post that goes through it.

CPR image (resized).jpg

Original image (resized).jpg

That is the highlight of the things on the topside that will need correcting, enlarging or locating before it can be sanded and cleared once again.

None of these are a knock against CPR it is just my experience putting the part into use and having s game play well not just look nice.

#1521 1 year ago

Next is the COR TAF underside evaluation and concerns
CPR underside.
image (resized).jpg

Used original underside with notes.
image (resized).jpg

The main problem I find with the CPR replacement is that the dimpling ranges from tiny pin pricks.
CPR
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

Original
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

To nothing at all.
CPR
image (resized).jpg

Original
image (resized).jpg

Often what dimples can be found on the CPR are off and would lead to things like crooked targets if followed.

CPR example
image (resized).jpg

Original example same target
image (resized).jpg

This is a situation that carries on from dimple to dimple when you can find them
and requires double checking and correction or creation of all.

#1522 1 year ago

Clamping the old over the new I can just redrill it image (resized).jpg

When you look through the old you can see the holes that are of or too small.
Off would be this.
image (resized).jpg

Too small examples

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
#1523 1 year ago

CPR topside is redrilled and dimpled. image (resized).jpg

All holes are now large enough.
Some dimples corrected image (resized).jpg

Ballguide through hole now in a better position image (resized).jpg

Wireguide holes are present. image (resized).jpg

Any roughness created by this process will either be covered during assembly or corrected when prepping for clearcoat.

#1524 1 year ago

So do you just use a longer bit (1.5") and drill all the way through the old playfield? Into the new one? Does this ever chip the new clearcoat? Jeesuz that would stress me out. No wonder you drink so much beer!

#1525 1 year ago

Me too, I am waiting on my F-14 to get back and crazy scared to be putting it under a old one, with nothing in between. But hey, if one of the best restore guys does it.

#1526 1 year ago

The underside is done the same way. C0A0C00A-9036-4D53-BF68-B3BADF0CBD2A (resized).jpeg

A red mark is made at each hole as it is drilled. image (resized).jpg

The old is removed and the dimples are now much more obvious and usable as well as accurate. image (resized).jpg

image (resized).jpg

Where the dimples were off you can get a better sense of how tiny the CPR dimples were I used a 3/32 bit to make the new ones.
image (resized).jpg

Now the playfield can be prepped for clear.

Placing it now redimpled directly over another CPR gold highlights the improvement. image (resized).jpg

Corrected.
image (resized).jpg
image (resized).jpg

As delivered.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

#1527 1 year ago

Ok Stupid question...how can you be sure the the CPR playfield (the actual artwork, not the wood) is lined up on the wood the same as the original? Are you worried that you might miss the mark if they are not perfectly lined up?

#1528 1 year ago

Next in the playfield prep department will be this Mirco WH2O set.
image (resized).jpg
image (resized).jpg

It has a pretty ugly clear application that is really hard to capture in pictures but basically if you look st the light reflection it has puddling and craters in some sections.

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

This was sent to me to correct and it also is not a knock against Mirco it is just a documentation of what I am with and to the playfield.

#1529 1 year ago
Quoted from timab2000:

I go by the holes not the art.
The holes are what will lead to the best playing game.
If there are issues after making corrections they will be taken care of during the painting(if needed) and clearing process.

#1530 1 year ago

The next playfield we will be prepping for clear is the CPR replacement playfield for the second EBD
image (resized).jpg
It is a customer supplied gold and looks good overall less some minor things like grainy wood.
image (resized).jpg

A couple ugly touch ups image (resized).jpg

There is some slight dotting in the green felt area but I fear doing anything about that would be opening a can of worms.
This is a close up
image (resized).jpg

This is at a normal distance.
image (resized).jpg

The reason I prefer not to mask and repaint the area is that it might be a really hard shade to match and it might create a 3D like look by having a layer of paint above the surface but we will see.

#1531 1 year ago

Pulling my original sample I do see a similar look in the felt area so I am ok with that.
image (resized).jpg
image (resized).jpg

Placed on the CPR accuracy is checked. image (resized).jpg
image (resized).jpg

No concerns can go straight to paint.

#1532 1 year ago

Next playfield to evaluate prior to prep and clear is a NOS LOTR

image (resized).jpg

Looks to be part of the LE run because of the signatures. image (resized).jpg

Nice playfield no issues that I can see beyond it benefiting from a more durable clearcoat.

#1533 1 year ago

LOTR is prepped by removing Mylar sections
Cleaning
Sanded
image (resized).jpg

Wiped down with solvents
image (resized).jpg

Minor chips
image (resized).jpg

Get minor touch ups. These will be covered when installed but it is best not to have bare wood spots just in case.

Had a small screening or printing smear.

127AF940-71CD-4839-A16C-116BAED4BE28 (resized).jpeg

Instead of masking and repainting the entire loop which might look worse overall if the cut outs get to intricate it was simply color matched and minimally spotted in. Will be better than the smear and should be less noticeable once cleared and even more so once installed. .

image (resized).jpg

Solvent cleaned. image (resized).jpg

Minor touch ups needed image (resized).jpg
image (resized).jpg

Done

image (resized).jpg
image (resized).jpg

The insert rollover is touched up to clean it up a bit.The issue is that it is overprinted out of round so perfection is trapped below the surface and therefore I just round it up as well as possible.
All should gel back together once cleared. The clear will clear up the insert like ghosting from the filing process.
It is a pain but must be done for a functioning insert rollover.

Dr Who playfield Mylar sections removed and it is chemically cleaned.

Shooter lane sanded as clean as possible without trenching. image (resized).jpg

Structural repairs are being made with fiberglass filler for added strength.

Dr Who playfield is now ready for the first clear as are the rest.

Dr Who playfield cleared for the first time
Needs much more work but the initial cleaning and clear is done.
235106A9-4D26-4864-A6C9-EA89EFF48539 (resized).jpeg

The main improvement is structural repair and the elimination of cracks /ghosting in the insert bank pictured.

The spot in area is acceptable given the limitations and while not perfect looks better than the smear. I could have repainted the entire loop but that would defeat the purpose of starting with a new playfield unless the were unavailable.

Quoted from Squeakman:

HHHMMM... I thought Mirco had a "Robot" that laid down a perfectly even clear every time.

I think in general whether it be NOS,Mirco,CPR,IPB or any other source there are going to be some duds in a run.
Just the law of averages.I don’t know the backstory on that particular playfield but it did have a less than ideal clear application for whatever reason.
For all I know Mirco could have refunded the buyer or it could have been disclosed etc I just fixed it is all.

#1548 1 year ago
Quoted from High_End_Pins:

None of these are a knock against CPR it is just my experience putting the part into use and having s game play well not just look nice.

I've found them receptive to updating their templates if they know it's a general issue. No one will doubt your # of cycles to validate your findings

Since they are working towards small batch production for on-demand.. having these fixes rolled back into their templates would greatly help the future.

#1549 1 year ago

Best to get as much clear done in a setting as you can
That’s the way I do it too
I hate just clearing one item
