Quoted from BorgDog:

Definitely like the black acorn nuts. Do those just screw on the same posts as the speed nuts that normally are on these? I might steal that idea when I get around to refurbing my Joker Poker.
and, sorry to whomever, but not a fan of those instruction cards.

With a little extra effort the black acorns went right on.
Since they are plastic iteas easy enough.
No problem on the instruction cards I use whatever I have on hand usually because many change both that and the playfield glass as soon as the game arrives. Just looking for something decent to fill in the gaps while it is here.

#102 5 years ago

can't wait to see you tackle that broken backglass....I'm assuming it's unobtainium??

#103 5 years ago

I'm sure i'll get in trouble for saying this, but that is the ugliest pinball cabinet I have ever seen.

It’s like weird office furniture had sex with a redemption game.

chris, what's the purpose of this nail inside of the rubber ring arrangement behind the switch on the joker poker?

I am not positive but there are several like that throughout the game.
I am going to guess a guard to keep the ball from getting in there

It keeps the plastic from sagging.

That and they make cool shadows

#109 5 years ago

psd4me 's comment makes the most sense. the only way a ball could get in there would be in the rubber snapped as well (and then you'd have the issue of the ball being able to enter from that upper right area

Agreed.
There are a couple others scattered around the playfield that look to be for ball guidance but they sit just out in the open.

That Alien cabinet could have been half the weight and twice as strong.

Alien head rear panel is ready to rework.

Filler is sanded. It is important that the edges are mostly wood because if I just used filler it would probably crack when the t molding is installed.

Love this thread format. Interesting seeing how you repair Alien.

While the panel dries I will start prepping the frame. 9FBAC7BC-4101-4844-86AA-E28BE07CF56D (resized).jpeg9FBAC7BC-4101-4844-86AA-E28BE07CF56D (resized).jpeg

There are several sheared off dowels.

Got them

#117 5 years ago

The frame is prepped for the replacement dowels where needed.

This is done by drilling the broken ones out with a proper sized forstener bit.
It is marked with tape as a method of measuring the proper depth.

#118 5 years ago

If you ever get tired of pinball I'm sure a museum would hire you for art restoration.

#119 5 years ago

The new dowels are set.

Back panel is redrilled and ready for the frame.

T molding fits well and while not perfect I am going to say it is perfectly fine for the location of it and will be a durable repair. Will let that sit for a bit then reassemble the rest.

Head is rebuilt less the backglass and now in place.

#124 5 years ago

Alien has pretty much run its course until I get the backglass so now I will start gearing up for next week.

I have two cabinets I need to prep and prime.

First is for the recently pulled IJ project. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

The second is for the first of my three up coming Spirit projects.

Always a good read - thanks for posting!

This. They didn't care about plastics sagging back then. Use the game 2 or 3 years, junk and replace.

LTG : )

#127 5 years ago

Alien cabs are so cheap looking! They could go out of business with work like that.

#128 5 years ago

The new Spirit cabinets are an unknown.
They were built to spec but before I paint and stencil I need to check some basics.
Does the coin door frame fit?image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

Does the lockbar receiver fit?this is complex cut and routing on these for pinball cabinets. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

What about the backglass?image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

Yes it does. It is Friday 5 o’clock Let’s have a toast!

Been a long week the Draak has kicked in and I am tired.
Tomorrow is my 46th birthday or as I like to think of it as “the 30th anniversary of my 16th birthday”expect limited production and who knows what?

#136 5 years ago

Happy 46th birthday Chris!!! Hope you have an awesome weekend!

#137 5 years ago

Great thread. Just curious if you have people on staff helping. Also wondering how you avoid burnout after all of these years?. Its pretty common especially with the pinball resurgence that people are getting overwhelmed that do work like you do which is understandable.
Congratualations on such fine work!

#138 5 years ago

Happy Birthday, Chris. I hope your day is as awesome as you are. Thanks for posting all the things you are doing. |It is awesome to watch your quick and astonishing work.

Thank you.
I do not have any help.
The main thing that keeps me from burning out is consistency and routine.
The system I have developed over the years keeps me busy but also allows for some daily freedom so it doesn’t feel like work or pressure even though it truly is.
Essentially I just built the work into my daily life and lifestyle so it feels like a natural part of the day not a chore.

#140 5 years ago

I'm sure this has been asked and answered, but where do you get your new cabinets?

#141 5 years ago

time to get up. happy birthday.

Alien is alive and well.
Kind of cool in the dark.
No evidence of being smashed except the lack of a backglass.

Backglass on it's way to you Chris

Quoted from j_m_:

chris, what's the purpose of this nail inside of the rubber ring arrangement behind the switch on the joker poker?
[quoted image]

The nails in older games do a few things:

It keeps the ball from getting trapped if the wrong size rubber is installed, while still allowing full switch blade travel (for self cleaning action).

On really large plastics, the installed nails are taller and keep the plastics from sagging from the bulb heat.

Stainless Steel finishing nails polish up as nice replacements.

This week of 9-24
I will start about where I left off last week.
Prepping and priming the new IJ and Spirit cabinets.
First will be doing the finish work to the heads.
Spirit

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
That head was built with a thicker back panel so it now feels more substantial than the original. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

There are some minor gaps and voids to fill prior to priming.

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
#148 5 years ago

Spirit head ready to prime

Builder did an excellent job in that needed very little fill work.

I am not filling the back because I am going to let that panel float since there is a grill to bolt into the back and it is very neatly and symmetrically built in.

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
#149 5 years ago

Going to do a new thread this week? or update the subject? Possibly update the subject to remove the date and just make it a more generic "HEP current projects in action" sort of thing?

#150 5 years ago

IJ Head is prepped.
Required a little more work than the Spirit but nothing out of the ordinary. 1CD3EC66-64EE-4BEC-BDBA-17DD261A69F2 (resized).jpeg1CD3EC66-64EE-4BEC-BDBA-17DD261A69F2 (resized).jpeg
