They do not perfectly align the replacement is slightly longer.

I see this occasionally and in these cases I make sure to fully align the most important features which are slings.

Flippers are just a single hole as are lamps that is why it is better to gravitate towards the larger and more complex/muti hole features when alignment issues pop up.
So my EBD project is part of a bigger picture overall.
I have the special one headed towards the finish line and in the background I am staging up the second one.
This is a point where I need to set the stage for the second one so there are steps I will take with the first one(special) to advance or gather knowledge for the second one(stock style build ) so before I gut the playfield from the special build I will copy the lamp board layout and wiring onto the second build.
I have a full set of EBD lamp boards so that is the hardware needed less figuring out how to adapt it to a non lamp board version.

This is even still part of a bigger picture because I am going to use the teardown playfield from the second EBD to best and most accurately drill the topside of the Special EBD so you start getting into chicken or the egg situations. I am working the room at this point not just the projects

So what will it take besides the lamp boards themselves to add lamp boards to a traditional EBD playfield?
Not too much that I can see I mostly need to pick up this black/white wire somewhere on the traditional playfield wiring179F65DC-A97A-4661-8636-0EC50CBE753A (resized).jpeg
Then of course the connector building and verification that they used the same lamp wiring colors from the 81 when they built the 84
No guarantees there.
That black and white wire need changes to blue and green when we get to the other two lamp boards on the 84
This is really just the buss on the 84 they made it blue/green in place of straight blue so again not everything is identical so I have to be careful and investigate as I go.

Yes that drill template is left over from the last three or four IPB swaps I have done.
Despite the lack of holes and dimples they are nice playfields overall.
Well - just managed to read through all the thread and I am totally depressed by it all as it makes my restoration attemps look feable at best!

Starting on the EBD 2 lamp board adaptation.
This will be where I start as it looks to be the most populated with sockets

I make up the correct number and pin outs of IDC connectors.

Some wires will run a little short that is mostly because of the condition of them and need to trim them well back. In those cases new color correct wire is run and will be tapped in staggered patterns well downstream within the harness.

So what's the end state here Chris, you are adding the light boards to a non-LE game to simplify the PF? I thought you were taking an LE and moving it into a stock cabinet vs the LE-beast... and removing the light boards.

I am building two EBD games so there is some cross over in the process but this thread is more about the day to day than a specific project so It might be confusing sometimes if you are zeroed in on specific project.
Here is the breakdown on the EBDs
I am building two different ones
The custom colored one
A stock looking one
I have three games here to do that with plus a lot of spare parts.
Games being used are
Traditional 81
LE
84 version
Add to that I have one full spare set of lamp boards.
End result will be the following
Two different HEP EBD games
Both in the traditional 81 style cabinet
Both with the playfield lamp boards
One custom colored
One stock colored.
Second EBD lamp board adaptation is done.

For those not quite as well versed the problem with this supplied playfield is that it is heavily cleared but missing the holes for almost all parts that need to be attached.
This presents a couple initial concerns.
1) will the clear crack when drilled?
2)how do I create all the missing holes accurately ?
Here is the original playfield in just a small section to compare to the new one in the same section to highlight the concern

After very carefully drilling the lack of holes issue has been resolved.

There is something good though.
An NOS playfield. It needs a good bit of work too but that is to be expected on games and parts this old.

I am going to start gutting DR Who
There are a couple parts I am waiting on for the EBD special playfield that will be here soon.
Last minute changes to the scheme as it builds so I have just a brief moment to start staging up one of the future projects.

I like to think of the various staging areas and games as being a bit like prisoners in the court system.
The warehouse is the penitentiary they are in there doing their time.
The large building is the local jail awaiting the appeal and acts as a temporary holding cell closer to the courtroom.
The garage is actual courtroom and time in front of the judge.
The judge is pretty fair. To date all prisoners have been rehabilitated,paid their fines and been released 
We are in the holding cell.

I am going to just strip this one and reuse it.
The cabinet builders take longer than the entire restorations usually.
They will quote two weeks and it takes two months.
I could have the entire game done by then so it just isn’t worth it on this one but makes sense on others.
Have to weigh it all out on a game by game basis.

I am going to reattach it with glue and lower profile screws using the same holes. This means one of the screw locations will need a dowel instead of a screw since it could clash with the latch screws.

Top plate is reinstalled.
Then small dowels are glued over the countersunk screw heads.
Once they dry I will shave them flush and only need a small filler application.

This is how it gets handled.
I buy an entire king at 12-15 pounds so I can take advantage of the free filleting and shipping which is a good savings since it has to be overnighted.
It arrives like this the next day.

Each fillet is dipped into a ice water light salt bath

Then they are placed in a vacuum bag.

I started building stuff out of wood as an early teen.
I was really into skateboarding and gravitated toward mostly halfpipes
After tooling around a little bit building small jump ramps and stuff my dad and I built a really nice ramp in my backyard since there was nowhere to go and skate back then.
It was 9 ft tall and 16 feet wide. I learned a lot not only doing the actual build but keeping it up for the three years I enjoyed it before I got a license and got into cars.
