Quoted from High_End_Pins:

Second EBD panel is wired for light and tested
These cost about $12 each so that is $60 right there for shields
Then figure just $1.25 for each socket and there are 50 and that is also just roughly $60 so $120
Now it cost $100 to have the panel made so now we are at $220
We had to prime it,sand it ,paint it then spend a full half a day wiring it .
Even on a conservative estimation this is a $400 lamp panel and that is probably not really enough.
I put that real world cost and effort thought out there because I think the things that people don’t see sometimes are undervalued and under appreciated but are some of the toughest to create or deal with.

Am really interested in the finances of this. I am not sure you would want to share, but I’ll ask anyway and not be offended if you don’t respond.

How does this work out for the customer? Do you quote a project ahead of time, then bill a single price, or do you give them a time and materials estimate, then charge them the real amount at the end of the project? It also seems you offer different levels of work based on prior games you have done less involved restorations. I am interested in how that billing works.

This has always been a tough question to answer over the years and as conditions continue to go down hill, request get more complex and my own process gets more and more involved it gets even tougher.
Best I can offer is what is on the page here and even that is a few years old.

I'm glad that you brought up the costs chris. even something like lamp sockets, I;ve always been amazed that you don't see the "true" cost for something until you keep track of everything in a spreadsheet and start adding it up. in fact, I think that's why many people don't. they really don't want to know how much money they've sunk into a restoration project (especially those that are married

I know that I recently spent well over $100 in lamp sockets alone so that when I receive the CPR joust playfield to re-do mine, and that's just the start (on top of the $1000 for the reproduction playfield!

your work is awesome, learning lots from this thread, thanks for sharing

also stoked to see the light shrouds in a HEP restore, unfortunately the pricing is what it is at Shapeways, though 15% sale this Cyber Monday.

Thank you Swinks.

The light shrouds are worth it to me.
Who would want to put these old ones back on the new panel compared to new shapeways?

Lamp panel is done for the special EBD we will call it.

Head is building

Since I am using the 84 versions wiring I am copying the board layout from that version.

84 version B884DE88-BCF8-4391-AC6B-12B7B56A4D2D (resized).jpegB884DE88-BCF8-4391-AC6B-12B7B56A4D2D (resized).jpeg

My converted 81 version.

I am installing a ground pin in the head for easier use.
When swapping system 11 andsomr TAF playfields you will run into this style jet bumper nail.
It is perfect to repurpose for head ground Pins. The anti twist is built in but it also has a Phillips head. BCCEB98D-A8BE-49D2-9EF6-F0CD6853F699 (resized).jpegBCCEB98D-A8BE-49D2-9EF6-F0CD6853F699 (resized).jpeg

That gets a recess made in the bottom of the head and a nice double strip of braid to land in.

Head is built up well enough to place.
I don’t want to make it too heavy right now as a I perfect the fit to the lower. 3ECFF0D9-0A2A-4B0B-8D58-78BDF2B26644 (resized).jpeg3ECFF0D9-0A2A-4B0B-8D58-78BDF2B26644 (resized).jpeg

The head is carefully fit.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

My preferred fit on these is a slight overhang in the back when up.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

It isn’t noticeable standing behind it.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

I find it an important detail because it gives better clearance between the rails and lower head trim when folded down.
Without that accounted for either the rails or face and potentially both can be indented when folded up.

Rails are now installed.

By using the exact same paint and clearcoat/matte ratios they just disappeared and I like it
Really puts the cabinet art front and center. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

You can see how the reflections on the cabinet and rail are essentially identical. That is important.

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
#1318 5 years ago

The now gold door frame and bolts are installed.

The same paint and clear ratios were used for the door and parts so nothing will out gloss anything else on the cabinet.

Awesome!!! Easily the best looking 8BD I've ever seen....and it's not even finished yet!!!!

#1321 5 years ago

I love how pins are playable works of art, and ones like this take it to a whole other level. Love the thought and attention to detail on this. Must be so satisfying to have the skills to create something like that.

Next up for EBD is working on the transformer panel and coin door parts.

I have nickel plated versions of anything I would need but I don’t want too much of that look on this game since it is more black and gold based. No way to avoid it all together but I will as much as possible.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

10F11C2E-25D8-4C51-8465-C8C45081DE29 (resized).jpeg10F11C2E-25D8-4C51-8465-C8C45081DE29 (resized).jpeg

My preference on this build will be a simple blackened metal.
It is something I can do here in house that will look nice and still maintain conductivity. That is usually lost in powdercoating.

Because of the layout of the transformer plate I need to use the set up from the LE.
I will make sure the LE still has a good useable transformer assembly but obviously this project comes first.
The 84 uses a shorter plate that does not fit the traditional cabinet the same way.

I have removed the ballast and starter for the LE light and transferred them back into the LE so this is what will be used to power the EBD

It is torndown along with the coin door parts B485D6E3-4061-49D8-8186-F8A31C687391 (resized).jpegB485D6E3-4061-49D8-8186-F8A31C687391 (resized).jpeg

The parts are blasted free of rust and coatings. 2998F891-D054-4CE1-A6A9-404A81FF7ECE (resized).jpeg2998F891-D054-4CE1-A6A9-404A81FF7ECE (resized).jpeg

They are then lightly blackened using a black metal etching primer.
This gives it both a nice bond and the correct look I am after. Kind of industrial or military like but clean.

This also allows me to keep the raw metal underneath the transformer panel so it will easily connect with the braiding in the cabinet.

Back to the EBD.
Door is built and a new harness is made.
I eliminate some of the parts that are no longer needed because on this era game it will simplify things in the event something pops up. It is still wired to accept coins but all slots are the same and the slam tilt is also eliminated from the door itself. 8AD16AD6-AFDA-4AF8-B964-46E63A915FE0 (resized).jpeg8AD16AD6-AFDA-4AF8-B964-46E63A915FE0 (resized).jpeg
