Both beautiful.

I’m surprised that I like the stock look of the nightmare game better without all the upgraded sculpts.

I'm not a fan of those particular sculpts, either. The apron one, especially is garish.

Although on the stock one is it a sample game with the stainless guides on the path of adventure? I like the red plastic better.

Quoted from flynnibus:

Chris - what is your preferred rivet removal method?
Drilling the head?
Drilling the flange?
Punching out from the backside?
I am getting annoyed not getting a clean cut when drilling the flange and having to do more work to get it popped out. I am curious what you have found most effective given the volume you do
Thx

Drilling the flange is the easiest because it gives a seat for the bit. Oftentimes after drilling two parts free you may still have to work on getting the rivet completely out. I usually hold the remaining rivet with end cutters and use a grinder to shave it down smooth enough to pop out when I have stubborn ones.
No magic bullet for this unfortunately. Rivets suck but it’s just part of the work we have to do.

Man, I'm now convinced that when I restore my IJ, I'm going with the black armor theme. That game just looks so clean. I wouldn't have even considered black until seeing your work Chris. Excellent job as always!

HEP is the absolute gold standard in pinball restoration--full stop. I'm in constant awe every time he posts pics of his completed projects. My goal one day is to have Chris restore both my TZ and ToM... Of course, that's if he hasn't retired by the time I've saved up enough cash to make it happen!

If you really really want it, sell a game to finance the HEP expense on one of your dream games. If you want it, don't wait, make it happen. Tomorrow isn't guaranteed to anyone. The struggle is real

Not to mention the backlog of games he has in que, mine was about 1.5 years from the time I dropped it off.

Very true... Definitely something to consider.

I teach orthodontics. If he's interested, I'd be happy to trade lessons. Orthodontics for pinball restorations. I have a standing offer at my office that I will trade dentistry for pinball machines.

The clear ramps are looking very promising.
Big thanks to Chris Z for making the ramp decal. I think without that it would be tough to pull off still a few more parts to place.
[quoted image][quoted image]

Just looking through this fantastic thread after a while and stoked to see the gun decal that Chris Z (who is masterful) and I worked out would fit nicely over the coil on the bottom right has ended up in a HEP game. And I love the ramp decal, I didn’t think of covering up that area but it looks excellent. The clear ramps look great but the do show up any hardware and wiring underneath.

The ramp decal was HEP’s idea, I just brought it to life for him. I know it’s just a decal, but I felt honored to be an infinitesimal part of his superlative work. Honestly, I don’t know how his head isn’t 10 sizes bigger with all of the praises we hurl upon him in this thread. Somehow he continues to set the standard in professional pinball restoration, but does so with humility. Just a couple of reasons I think we all appreciate him sharing his craft like he does.

Thanks Chris.
You did an excellent job on that decal.
I am just happy there is an audience for the strange application of my skill sets and quirks.

Was just watching WH2O on YouTube wondering if your High_End_Pins wife or other family members watch your videos. Several minutes later, you mentioned about your breakfast being inadequate that day. Brave man I thought! Then a snack arrives....

Yeah my wife is in charge of HEP maintenance. She’s not supposed to let the equipment run low on fuel or the pipes back up

Nice arrangement! Sounds like your family unit is well organised, just like your shop & work practices.

Nothing too exciting going on around here yet.
I did finish wiring the WH2O MS cabinet and I am well into the playfield.

Chris (or anyone in this thread), where are you sourcing the oak playfield rails from? Are you making these yourself now? I had purchased from Taylor Reese in the past but he seems to have stopped his operation. At least through pinside. I am looking for a set for a Whirlwind.

If you are a DIY guy:
At the local hobby store, or wood shop, you can buy raw rails for few $ / pin. All you need is: jigsaw, drill, sandpaper, black paint. Clearcoat is optional (I did not applied).
As I remember, cost was 6$ for 2 pin, and an hour of work.

Anything I can’t get from Taylor I either make myself or reuse the originals.
Hopefully Taylor finds his way back here. He is probably just burned out since it’s an optional source of income and more hobby based for him I believe.
He lives down the road from my parents and has been a friend long before he started making the rails which was a much needed void to fill.
You can do it yourself but he has an extensive library and a lot of specific know how that comes with experience of doing something so frequently.

Well next time you see him tell him we miss him on here! (And ask him for an extra set for Whirlwind )

I've really enjoyed the recent YouTube videos, with the IJ nightmare project and now WH20.

Learned a few things from Chris & marvelled at others, knowing I'll never be able to paint & finish like him.

This thread is also something I look forward to reading.

Me too. All he needs is a theme song and a hot assistant and this could be on prime time TV.

Quoted from hisokajp:

It is a common trend in most repo ramps. Companies make the ramps thicker to make them more robust… then that leads to fitment adjustments needed. Some titles just have harder transition points than others… like those side exits on the whitewater mini. Nothing a router usually doesn’t make quick work of.

Most agree the stronger ramps are worth it in the end.
