Building up the first IJ playfield. [quoted image]
I am always trying to solve that design flaw know as the mode start hole.
Trying a couple things this time around.
I have found ways to improve it but I would love really solve it around here.
High hopes for this set up we will see. [quoted image]
Also lowered the saucer.

Lowering the saucer 100% fixes bounce outs. Is the clear saucer a choice, or is red unavailable? All the Indys I've had the saucer was red (or reddish orange).

Clear is just a choice sometimes then I can make it red, green ,blue or something else with lighting.

Ricochet Came up with solid solution for the mode start. Might want to reach out to him for one of his "antidotes"

These might work good on radcals?

Those look cool. I generally try to go with or figure out in house solutions because I never know when I will need it again.

It’s time to start finishing up the latest HEP MX project.
Still have a couple parts at the platers but nothing that isn’t easy to swap later so I will get it up and running for now.
No more after this for now.
I did end up selling my 75 for full asking price plus a crating fee to a dentist in RI that had one as a kid.

Should be ready for gas tomorrow. Left the oil pump cover off so I don’t forget to bleed it after rebuilding the motor and the pump itself. The handle and muffler guard are temporary but might stay. They look pretty nice. A50ED652-B9F9-4E3A-A73C-EC5956FDF0F6 (resized).jpegA50ED652-B9F9-4E3A-A73C-EC5956FDF0F6 (resized).jpeg

I stripped the white off the new seat cover and painted that blue. BB068596-7825-48BA-9851-2E4CE4F015EC (resized).jpegBB068596-7825-48BA-9851-2E4CE4F015EC (resized).jpeg

Chris,

As with everything you do that Yamaha looks GREAT!

I think that muffler guard has to stay. I love just that little bit of accent chrome with all the rest of the black on the bike.

THANK GOD you got that yellow off the seat. The blue letters look perfect!

I like the muffler guard

Thanks. I think I am going to stick with that and the levers but that’s easy to say without having the others in hand. I will probably wait to take final pictures until I at least check them out on there.

IJ is up on legs with its trim now.
Most people request brass but I really prefer black on this game it just flows well with the corners. Mi will fill in the colors on the corners laters. Alignment is good. Had to sand and polish the decals. They had lots of trash in the finish but IJ art is a challenge to find.
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

Whose decals do you use on IJ out of interest?

The black armour definitely works

Hey Chris: I have tried a number of different solutions over the years for my two different IJs. Installed this set about a year ago and I’m very happy with it. Obviously works along the lines of lowering the saucer but takes it a step further and lowers the other associated parts. Works about 95% of the time; the few times it doesn’t work is probably because of an ineffective shot.

You may have already seen it:

I have to sand and polish them. They look good overall but there is trash in the finish coat.

Thanks Oscar.I completely forgot about those. I will probably grab a couple if available. The lowering of everything is pretty sound thinking.
I have been doing very well. Hope you are also.

I actually made a video of the 75 today just to verify it runs and rides before crating it up.
Had to skip my workout though. Wrestling the wood saw and bike in the heat was good enough for a Sunday.

Ok I finally recovered from the long weekend. The crating, the anniversary and much more.
I am ready to really get back to pinball.

This crate is nice. I am thinking about building a similar one on wheels. FFC62156-1AD9-4875-B753-DF87D8C7A562 (resized).jpegFFC62156-1AD9-4875-B753-DF87D8C7A562 (resized).jpeg

Made pretty good progress on the Sorcerer playfield build.
It’s one thing to swap one of these but another to rework the wiring and switches entirely.
Switching from the leaf blades over to the micro switches is a little more challenging on these because the switch cut outs are a little shorter so the actuators have to be shortened.
Also have to be strategic with which switches you use rights or lefts to clear things not yet placed. BF3F7A1D-CCC2-46F5-ACC0-08497AEDBF59 (resized).jpegBF3F7A1D-CCC2-46F5-ACC0-08497AEDBF59 (resized).jpeg
As I remove a part I rebuild it wire it and place then make a corresponding plug on the original harness. 6FC9C1FC-1509-4F60-8475-9A6198773962 (resized).jpeg6FC9C1FC-1509-4F60-8475-9A6198773962 (resized).jpeg

I am able to eliminate the need to have large or long runs of staple down wire by wiring lamp sockets in smaller groups and joining them in connectors.
It’s gets the wire off the playfield and elevated.
Instead of this. 2DA07DE0-7DCA-4299-B5BC-5E4077CF200C (resized).jpeg2DA07DE0-7DCA-4299-B5BC-5E4077CF200C (resized).jpeg

Small sections at a time. Very tedious and time consuming on the front end.

Chris, what are the steps to sand and polish decals? I imagine that can be a delicate procedure.

#11174 1 year ago

Hi Chris, I'm working on another scratch build. This time it is The Getaway.

Do you happen to have (and be willing to share) the pivot nut locations for the version that uses slides? Preferably referenced from the outside rear and bottom of the cabinet.

Thanks for documenting your work so well. It is truly inspiring!

Playfield is in the cabinet. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
Now has resting brackets. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
In the first pictures one was taller than the other even though they are both the same style. I think the taller version was from a TZ sample game which is a really oddball bracket that I just randomly grabbed out of my plating drawer. Fixed that.

#11177 1 year ago

So did you install playfield slides to go with the resting brackets?

#11178 1 year ago
Quoted from GRUMPY:

So did you install playfield slides to go with the resting brackets?

No this game has the wooden playfield runners screwed and glued to the inside of the cabinet.
Sometimes I will install the Stern metal playfield glides on the top edges here but this one has a lot of screws in that area.

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
#11179 1 year ago

The main advantage of the resting bracket is when you pull it out and rest it the cabinet and eject coil are protected.

I have always wanted to add cabinet slides to an older game like this or system 11. I thought you beat me to it.

#11181 1 year ago
Quoted from jazc4:

Basically that is just like sanding and polishing a playfield but only 1500 gets used and very lightly.

Quoted from GRUMPY:

Yeah me too. I did something like that on my red Centaur project last year.
I think Wally did it on a TAF
Every time I look at one to try it on something is in the way so I think if done it would need to be the Stern/Data East way not the Williams version.

Chris, have you ever done a machine for yourself and kept it for a while? I know from reading your thread that you don't really play anymore but your pins are like art. Just wondering if you ever keep any around to admire?

The closest I came recently to that was the red Centaur. I was doing that for myself just mostly as an experiment to see how far that factory art scheme could go.
There was a local guy that stopped by to pick up his TOM. As soon as he saw it he wanted to buy it even though it was just the cabinet being assembled at that time.
I was pretty hesitant but realized at that point I had already pretty much accomplished what I wanted to.
If I wasn’t able to live vicariously through others doing this work I would probably have some keepers though.

Stellar work, as usual. That lonely red start button in a sea of black always bugs me. Maybe if you get an adventurous client you can try pulling in the dragon from the sides of the head and make that its eye. There'd be some work to integrate it at the bottom of the coin door, but it could look really cool.

That does look cool could see doing it in the opposite direction on the other side too even though the shooter rod would impose on it.
If I do another I will figure that out.

Or on the other side you could stencil a scepter that ends at the shooter plate, so you'd have the dragon represented on the start side and the sorcerer represented on the shooter side, keeping the theme in balance.
