Quoted from Pin_Fandango:

I want to do this to my IJ and been practicing to crimp two cables in 1 cable and I failed miserably... wondering what the technic is... I am considering running a 3rd cable from the switch and use a 3 pin connector instead... but it is more work...

Twist the wires together then crimp.

Use a proper ratchet crimper and it makes a positive connection.

I know this is old and that Chris is not updating this thread, however, can someone provide first hand details on how to accurately measure the location of these holes? It seems obvious but then it is not really, for example, how do you find the absolute center of that hole to finish your measurement off.
thanks

This is what i use. Its incredibly handy, i use it all the time.

I do have the proper crimper, but The cables is too thick as you have now 2 insulations at the back. The terminals break.
I have also tried removing the insulation of one cable far back enough but the resulting crimp is very poor. I test my crimps with weights, if they can’t take 5-10 lbs of pull they are a fail.
These double crimps fail miserably for me on this test, so cant see how my crimps would fair after connecting disconnecting a few times.

I was referring actually to the action of measuring the center of an existing hole. How do you measure this when there is already a hole there, therefore, the void getting in the way of getting a proper and repeatable measurement?
Does he fill the holes and then measures?

Lol what is the technique.

Push the transfer punch into the hole from the bottom. The pointed end tells you the center.

And vice versa.

There are lots of sizes in the set.

I have never not found one to fit.

Its simple enough.

On a double insertion the insulation just goes up to the end but not inside.

Its works well, i convert many 3 wire to 2 wire.

I crimp two wires, solder to terminal. Makes a bulletproof connection. Minimalist solder obviously so pin can fit connector.

Every time I see your photos it makes me want to take my pins outside, but then I think all that would do is highlight all of the imperfections. Not only is your work world-class, but you have the cojones to display your work with high quality photos in the best lighting possible.

Chrome is the best choice for CV. Accents the neon and bright colors of the cab and playfield perfectly.

Ok yes I am back.
Had to put some pictures up real quick this morning to close out where I left off,let it be known and get the thread heading back the right direction before the riff raff took it over
Planned a bit more of a grandiose return but this one will have to do.

Glad to see the thread back up and running.

Hope you get those galleries on your website back online too!

I hope so. I spent $1000 with my web lady upgrading it and it has been not so easy. Still doesn’t seem to work right yet.
That is an old platform and the designers have abandoned it but I have so much content and money invested in it over the years I am trying to salvage and upgrade it to whatever is the latest version available.

I am starting to get a comfort level with that.
Lots of good stuff coming up there too.

Kicking off my last SC project.
This one should be pretty easy. I have an NOS playfield for it that I have already cleared sanded and polished. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
Right now I am just removing complete assemblies so I can get the cabinet stripped and ready to prime. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
One of the nice things about SC is that the playfield can easily be removed and set aside as an assembly.

I really liked your YT videos Chris, especially your elaborations on your train of thought/rational. BUT... the multiple segments per day have a consequence of 'lots of choices, not sure what to watch'. I know it makes it easier to make short clips... but without any descriptions or lead-in to know what the scope of the video is, when there is alot of them, people are less likely to click through and watch. "too many choices, not sure which..." etc. Some lead in to know what the clip will be about would help.

Thanks again as always for your continued efforts to document and share your approach to things.

Thanks for the feedback I will give that a try on a few.
Often I don’t know myself though because there will be multiple things in a single update but most of these videos will be deleted or made private after a week or two.
Reason being they are tied to certain projects or processes that become less relevant as they progress.

Works for me, I like the short videos. Just do whatever works for you and your schedule.

Appreciate it. The Q&A seems to be the most popular overall so will need more questions for that.

I don't want to direct you one way or the other but if you are looking for questions here are some things that interest me:

- I was interested in seeing you use a silk screen for the back-box warning and was wondering if that was something a casual restorer should look into or if that is best left to the pros.
- It seems like you you aren't doing a lot of playfield repainting but if you every did one I would love to see details about what paint you use, what masking material, and how you deal with waterslides/decals over inserts...
- It would be interesting to see your opinions on the pros/cons for various plating and powdercoating options.

- Maybe more of a philosophical one but when doing a restoration how do you know when to stop....what is adding value and what is diminishing returns. How much effort to put in to areas know one will see. How do you gage what is good enough? What is absolutely necessary and what is just gilding?

That is pretty much all stuff that's been asked and answered here. Just saying as this is the only media i'll be using.

If you have better question then maybe you should ask them?

Seriously, what is the point of this post? Good for you asked your questions two years ago and can't figure out youtube.

All fine questions but I should have clarified to put them in the comments portion of the Q&A videos.
I don’t want to clutter Pinside with YT stuff.

Chris: you’ve mentioned several times about deleting these videos on YouTube after a certain time. Please don’t! They, just like this thread and previous threads, are a treasure trove of information that is hobbyists use to help with our projects.

Worked through most of the ES mechs. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
Have a few of the more game specific ones left to do. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
Started building up the TZ playfield. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
Cabinet for that is ready to go.
