Now let’s go over the anatomy of a paint job.
Starting around 1pm
The ES cabinet is sanded.73AEF32B-58B7-41D7-AEB3-6F3A6B6B7724 (resized).jpeg13892C41-B715-46E9-8223-0488C1F15FC1 (resized).jpeg
Next I need to move the cabinets painted yesterday out of the spray room. DoneF46F4FD4-DF22-4E1C-9057-2D8E78C01426 (resized).jpeg
Now I need to clean the room up and change the filters. 33909E79-811A-46BF-8F8D-43BD913FE8E4 (resized).jpegCAA83924-3324-421C-B577-38F7CBC0F1F3 (resized).jpeg
Did that. FC9A472B-3C3F-4A36-AFAA-1AB3F2DD3E96 (resized).jpegCE87E2B5-4E9C-4DE8-8537-9F3A1D282CB8 (resized).jpeg
Put the ES cabinet in the room and mask it off so I can start painting the panels only. 1F5D1095-CAFB-4126-AB38-2B0A4E9D223A (resized).jpeg22C3FD45-4D7B-486F-BE7E-8D35FFD250AE (resized).jpeg98EE04CD-A3D8-47C5-9939-2508D7125D3F (resized).jpeg
About an hour in so far.
Quoted from High_End_Pins:This morning started with a new arrival.
Will have to see what’s in there another day.
IJ. Sweet!
Stencils arrive perfect timing. CD9CE248-F99E-4476-BEC8-C600CB7B3042 (resized).jpeg
Unrolled. 2D93E5B9-E9C9-415A-B985-C8B9A47098D6 (resized).jpeg
Pretty crinkled up but salvageable. There’s a lot here to deal with. 2E0B4763-1BE3-43D8-BD5B-7B1AEF332887 (resized).jpegB46C2F4F-5525-4115-91F6-D9C7EBC85D63 (resized).jpeg
Going to need to tackle this one side at a time one color at a time for at least the first stencil.
It needs to be very carefully placed and removed. This is the stencil from hell.
One side is placed. Another hour in. We are at two hours already and the first color hasn’t been shot on the first side. Never mind the work and time spent previously prepping the cabinet, priming it ,matching it sanding it painting it and clearing it. 4DC2E28A-B243-4F1D-B58D-9F70E603BC89 (resized).jpeg60D6F337-5CE4-443F-87EC-662C1047313A (resized).jpeg
First color first side down.
Let’s talk about unmasking.
As I unmask it is very common to have glue residue left behind. Sometimes minor other times major. The paint I use is extremely strong so it basically eats the stencil material like a snack.
I am aware and prepared. To combat this it takes a few different approaches, light coats ,timing and careful strategic unmasking. 63F2881B-DCBE-41AF-A87F-335D22278CBB (resized).jpeg
When residue is left like this.
0F956F3D-BC4A-4CD1-94CE-95719852924D (resized).jpeg
It must be blotted with tape repeatedly to remove it without damaging the paint work. C308662C-6D7A-483C-93F8-893F22D30A82 (resized).jpeg7B6BD82E-6CDB-424F-8FAA-ED4549CB79BB (resized).jpeg
Very tedious. Thirty minutes more one side based first color and unmasked.
I had a few sample Earthshakers come through the shop back in the golden years. One had a head that was almost like a light blue and the body was a regular blue, the other one was that real light blue both body and head. I think you or Donnie got that one. I remember it was really ugly and the spiral in the front was different or something. Ring a bell?
Now the next side. One more hour. CC2048AF-5B4E-42D3-825E-6FBCE1B68D11 (resized).jpegCAC2E6F9-F8AB-4900-A6AB-29B01B553119 (resized).jpeg84AC98AA-BC1C-4865-90CE-5A1CC7487506 (resized).jpeg
Front.
This is really tough because the button alignment must be perfect and it comes in three sections to interlock. Lots of measuring and placing. Another hour and a half F4A6EA99-8073-423F-8952-C3FB24B3DEBD (resized).jpeg60AFBF2B-C84E-494F-AA99-C6FE23A6C444 (resized).jpegB7F8243B-FDE1-42E6-A103-D613009C05B2 (resized).jpeg
Now for the head. What’s interesting about that is red goes first so clean the gun and get that ready. Close to an hour there. 8482E947-774A-4476-BD19-C29CEDFC6A19 (resized).jpegA910F0E9-EEFB-4048-9BFD-D1653DA4B469 (resized).jpeg929A442C-1B87-4B2D-A183-5A0B8CA7DEEB (resized).jpegAC7FA4AB-8EC9-4C5E-922A-B37436BE3FE0 (resized).jpeg
Now I am going to lightly clear everything.
The reason for that is because I do not want anything to get in the white of the lower. That could be minor dust or residue and it would ruin it or make more work later.
Cleared about an hour later B83069FD-80A0-4F2C-8BDA-3047E255FC7F (resized).jpegA99F81C8-044B-4D34-B34C-E286CE554099 (resized).jpeg86808C23-75FB-4E77-8F42-4DDCA7FBAC6A (resized).jpeg
Now I need to pull all the x squares and mist a little more clear. This is a very light clear just to protect the color I don’t want to bury the impression of the boxes now.
Total time today. Right around 6 hours. 6C84FFA0-A3A8-4878-BD44-F9269641ABA7 (resized).jpeg
Notice that the boxes can still be located. This is by design and it is intentionally not a thick or slick coat. All that will come later.

Yes. I think it ran through here at some point. There was a time when you could get nice screen printed sample ES cabinet decals and I wouldn’t think twice about a game like that. Now they are all shit so I am tortured with these paint jobs.
It’s hard to believe sometimes that we are actually worse off now in terms of parts and art in some ways than we were back then.
Learned a lot from your threads on painting. Helped me get through my High Speed restore. Was fun to do but I would rather do the mechanical side of pinball any day of the week.
Painting takes a lot of knowledge, experience and expertise to make it look good. Thanks for sharing.
Mystic finished.

Thank you Stu.
Quoted from aobrien5:Beautiful. Such a good choice to fix the blue on the playfield.
Appreciate it. That was a really tough decision to make on a brand new playfield but I am glad I did now it’s all done.
Amazing job as always. I enjoy reading about the whole painting process and the time involved. It gives me (and presumably other readers) a much greater appreciation for the work that you do.
Cheers,
...and just when I think that HEP had reached the pinnacle he exceeds it again!!! Chris that is a MASTERPIECE!!!
Anatomy of a paint job part 2
We start out today at 4F8E60CC-F290-46ED-A05F-91FE35297B52 (resized).jpeg
First step is to sand the cabinet but not in a way that will flatten or level it.
A soft interface pad is a good tool here. F05EFC8F-BEC2-43EE-AE4E-8E263C50BBE4 (resized).jpeg
Did that. 1E9E5C46-802D-433B-8E4E-475A07579083 (resized).jpeg
Didn’t take too long. 9B6E6148-17F6-4BB1-91A7-59D35302BC45 (resized).jpeg
Now clean it F1D1FA84-1EAE-44ED-8407-E5960902CE29 (resized).jpeg
Mark the boxes with a pencil. 636EFD1E-BAFA-4FF8-ACDD-90D5DD8209B4 (resized).jpeg
Place the head stencil second color. 76C62C39-2533-4EC8-B12B-E79B3F7A78EA (resized).jpeg
Spray that. CFC39007-32DE-4D22-9001-68A0C2A24AC6 (resized).jpeg
Unmask it 93248337-D120-490D-9146-4B742ECFB698 (resized).jpeg
About an hour in so far. 27DDB203-8862-4872-9949-2FBA0A3E608F (resized).jpeg
Got in a quick workout(just to explain the time and calorie lapse)
EC016C47-E523-4CDE-A788-35E17FA75948 (resized).jpeg
Now for the third color on the head.
8C94F783-D9EB-4BFC-ADD3-F84D962BFB7C (resized).jpeg
It’s my least favorite color to spray yellow. 5F406EA7-A9CD-4E4C-8CFE-856A3B93E9AD (resized).jpeg
Coverage always sucks!
94D344C9-FAD5-43DB-A5F3-D601F821AB20 (resized).jpeg
Best to mist a little white and go from there. CCCC7E91-68BA-4899-8B07-6086BBD6FE79 (resized).jpeg
Much better. E4D10A6F-BC6E-4F53-9ECC-C1BA47C2E634 (resized).jpeg
You can really ruin a good paint job fast being impatient. Will this kicks off a little I will have some lunch. A928C1CA-3311-4057-A7D1-DF45E7D4659E (resized).jpegF5D91387-4183-4CFC-A256-830E6B0030CF (resized).jpeg
Now back at it. EC47E1B4-9B00-461E-8AA7-1ACA4B268566 (resized).jpeg
There are many details not in the stencil that have to be done manually. Some easy some very complex. This is an easy one. 467A19CD-4AB1-4A2D-8111-62B56BD08CF5 (resized).jpeg
I need to make orange accents in the states.
Masked and sprayed. DE319F60-DC5C-49E0-911F-F24D062FBC62 (resized).jpeg
12796B16-104B-464C-B087-34AD31818E47 (resized).jpeg
Head is as far as it goes for now. 8F0226AB-4E06-440F-9ED6-030CDED4B233 (resized).jpeg5FFB6AC4-0D4A-4C1A-8C56-89DF196C42D8 (resized).jpeg
We are in about three hours so far today subtracting workout and lunch. 84A187EB-8A31-4461-BD12-F5871F068616 (resized).jpeg
Time to start on the lower. This is where stencils just become guidelines. 154ECE02-21B5-44DB-A20D-B65E025D4384 (resized).jpeg
9601039D-9EAB-4110-9378-F3D4D62961EA (resized).jpeg
Second color lower. Yellow.
CB639407-2EB9-4A83-A0E3-697626AC0A1B (resized).jpeg
That was easy!
It’s about to get complicated. 1D2FCACA-10FE-4F8D-B1EE-1E42159A777A (resized).jpeg
Spray the transitions part 1 42A5661F-D9AA-4F1D-84C3-62A08B82E08E (resized).jpegEC4458A3-339B-49C1-89AD-9C0ADC6EC0BF (resized).jpeg
Not terrible but that is just one pass one side one time. 101E4156-B375-4E7F-89C9-BFD025A62EA6 (resized).jpeg
Now both side are done part 1 and unmasked. 5F720222-7471-4523-BC17-B7DFEC455CC1 (resized).jpegLooks good right?
196B4977-D949-483C-865B-3A4422F08E48 (resized).jpeg
Not so fast. That was just the beginning.
Swap all the guns and color around. And do part 2FE83CF87-244B-4FEA-8C32-5F9379C29CA8 (resized).jpeg7F870F36-C8B6-4745-9E8E-BF521CB4A55F (resized).jpeg
Perfect alignment is critical!!
0BC20BA5-636C-491D-81D7-3C2EA92ABCC9 (resized).jpeg
Spray again. B8C0692C-89C6-4E90-BEEA-0756E5E00E48 (resized).jpeg
There is an art and feel to this that can’t be conveyed it’s really based in getting smooth and clean transitions from color to color not splotchy or too drastic. 6D5A357B-F2C2-49E7-B506-ACADE824A5BC (resized).jpegA88D52DA-B7C1-492B-9E8F-E0209D691A2A (resized).jpeg
Where are we at?About five hours?02C18A2F-84F8-4E3D-BD5B-85E84ABE4F70 (resized).jpeg
I missed documenting the front red circles but that was done.
It’s about six hours later and we are ready to clear again. There is still one color left to do which is black but too risky at this point. We need to clear and level again. E2F35C97-B0C2-46F2-AF91-5B93B9AA28ED (resized).jpeg
Ready to clear.

yeah, you're better at this than the average bear.
This is the third clear application. It is a applied a little heavier this time because of the color stacking and fuzziness of the transitions. 90/10 for me these days.
Sometimes I get tempted to switch to trying to do everything right a hundred percent of the time but then I realize how miserable that would be.

Yea that doesn’t sound fun at all! Life is too short to not enjoy some goodies at least once a week. When I used to train and and had a very strict diet Sunday was my cheat day... all things in moderation

Now that's more like it!! Käsekuchen!!! That's one nice looking piece of German cheesecake!
Wunderbar!!!
That’s an absolute insane amount of work Chris. I only cut difficult stencils like this for you since you’re about the only guy that could pull it off. It took me nearly 8 hours to cut and weed two sets of these stencils on my end.
If people only knew the amount of time involved to achieve restorations to this level it would blow their mind. Can’t wait to see the finished product. PS… I can’t believe how the Postal Service throws package around to crinkle the edges of the stencils as badly as they were. Ridiculous
Chris: watching your progress on this cabinet is fascinating. In my personal experience, the cabinet is the most challenging part of any restore - because it requires so much prep, clean up, and to your point - PATIENCE! I learn something every time you share one of these restores - thank you, AGAIN!
Jeff: so many of these more complicated restorations couldn't even get off the ground without your skill and expertise, I thank YOU, as well!
The anatomy of the paint job continues. Part 3(6 if you include, cabinet prep, prime, base color and clear)
Time to start heading this one for the finish line.
Today I will start dialing in details and getting closer to being able to place the final stencil.

I want to take some of the pop off the orange accents. Many colors are tough to know how they will look until cleared. Once cleared they can be more vivid less vivid or about the same.

The lower gradients look is a multiple step process it relies on many colors, guns, air pressures ,thicker paint, thinner paints. The ground floor was in place but it’s a bit too red up top and needs to be blended out better. Today I will do these sides all at once in the natural position to make sure everything is uniform.
