Quoted from High_End_Pins:

Depends on the game. Usually I refer to the pictures I have at some point on every build because often things come in assembled wrong or missing something.
I still use old school methods in that regard.
This is my BSD folder. [quoted image]
I have built a pretty good library over the years.
[quoted image]
So much easier than the computer or phone.
[quoted image]

Don't know about anyone else, but I would pay good money for some PDFs covering all those folders......what a treasure!!!

Wow what a resource. You could probably make some side jingle if you digitized that and charged a fee to access the database, unless of course you want to keep that for competitive advantage.

The competitive advantage is no one does it like HEP! No one that I've seen anyway.

Man have I been at it today! Doesn’t look like much but I at least have the blueprint down to copy all these trashed parts configurations. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

There is a lot of wiring and soldering in my short term future. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
I mapped out one section.
All sub assemblies will be the way to go. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
There is no way to make stuff like this image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
Look like this without putting the parts and time in. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
It just needs it all head to toe. Even the most minor parts are rusty.

Chris your work is unbelievable. The attention to detail is second to none.

whoa the microswitch rust oxidized to green on all 3 legs? that's pretty hardcore for a WPC :/

Yeah. I can’t imagine anyway in the world this game even came to close to working right if at all in this condition.
Can’t remember the for sale ad for it it’s been here a year but I am might look to see how it was represented just out of curiosity.
Some people are just not well informed others are obviously shady. The ad descriptions weighed against the conditions usually help tell the difference.
Makes no difference to me just takes a good bit of extra effort to get where I am going.

#9308 2 years ago

I managed to box all the return items for the JD and at least get that stuff situated on a pallet with the game.
Still need to strap it and wrap it but it needs to stay here another week first.
I will be glad to get some space back

While I was at the warehouse I needed to verify some things for the SOF stencil creation.

Mostly sizing etc.
I hadn’t bothered unpacking the game previously.
My thought pattern is “Why bother? Whatever it is you will just have to deal with or address it when the time comes “ That doesn’t mean I will or can fix or solve any problem it just means I will cross that bridge when I get to it.

Looks ok at a glance. This side anyway.

Turns out to be pretty rough on the playfield side of things. Considering it’s a System 11 with a full Mylar. It’s only going to get worse before it gets better.Mylar removal and clearcoating of these is a risky and much more time consuming process. Add in the wear and it is major job. 634E316C-7E27-4BEE-B379-650AE3524C6C (resized).jpeg634E316C-7E27-4BEE-B379-650AE3524C6C (resized).jpegE4192745-FE0B-4448-B7F9-7B1299043EE4 (resized).jpegE4192745-FE0B-4448-B7F9-7B1299043EE4 (resized).jpegE3307227-80BE-4A86-8EDE-4B357797EFE1 (resized).jpegE3307227-80BE-4A86-8EDE-4B357797EFE1 (resized).jpeg

Before I even begin I have had a new cabinet built, bought two sets of cabinet decals one to convert to stencils one to keep in case it doesn’t pan out, cashed in goodwill with Jeff to make the stencils the true cost is unknown at this time, ordered a hardtop in case the Mylar pull goes poorly.

That’s a lot of extra legwork and expense just to set the stage for a lot of work ahead or provide outs for things that might not be within my control.
It’s something that is given little to no thought nor appreciation from the customer base often and these types of projects become highly underfunded very quickly before any work is even done as a result.

It’s an intense mechanical and rewiring project.

pretty much a scratch build at that point

#9313 2 years ago

I rewired my BSD from scratch since there were a ton of hacks and dubious stuff. Took me *many* weeks poking away at it. Your work ethic and productivity are inspiring! I never would have tried it without seeing your work in this thread. And yes, all colour-correct wiring (most of it "hand-striped" using a drill and paint pens).

One thing I did find....my 22AWG wire is just chunkier than what Williams used. Not sure if it's just the insulation or what.

Thanks.
Yes same here my 22awg is also.
On some Williams builds its exact on others the factory wire seems much closer to 24awg at least in terms of total diameter.
When you have that style of wire from the factory there are many more broken and brittle connections.

Not today. Hard to get Marshall out the door some days. Now that he’s out of school we can probably get him out during the week.
I just lifted weights now I am dusting off the me-mover and pumping up the tires for a spin around the neighborhood.
Haven’t used this thing since the fall.

Hoping I can take some inspiration from the SoF rebuild. My own game is pretty hacked up, maybe this will be the motivation to take it apart and fix it the right way.

#9318 2 years ago

Down to the solenoid harness for the BSD.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
I have had to raid my BSD bin along the way to come up with better motors and brackets but they are much better off on this game than in my bin I suppose. 277848D0-234F-4D11-A8E9-03B8118BC007 (resized).jpeg277848D0-234F-4D11-A8E9-03B8118BC007 (resized).jpeg6594F53F-1BDC-4215-BE83-71202B1A1A5D (resized).jpeg6594F53F-1BDC-4215-BE83-71202B1A1A5D (resized).jpeg
The old stuff is much more suspect looking but serviceable. Better back ups than parts to put to use if given the choice.

I keep a variety of sizes though.

Ive been using the clear heat shrink quite a lot.

Its pretty good, and no zip ties to hold it on.

This was one time consuming mechanical and electrical restoration.

What's with the mix of pan head and hex head on that one 4 screw solenoid bracket?

#9325 2 years ago
Quoted from PinMonk:

What's with the mix of pan head and hex head on that one 4 screw solenoid bracket?

Good question and observation.
You can’t install the hex heads there because of the screws holding the coil bracket assembly.
There is another like that in the game and there are other games like it.
I think the factory might actually use all pan heads there but for consistency I try to use as few as possible. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
Without those it’s no problem.

Ah, got it. From those angles it's much more obvious. From that overhead low angle it looked do-able.

Yes I do.
The extra time and effort it takes to work through those type of games is frustrating. It usually becomes more of a personal mission than a service at that point.

I call that my mid shop. Not the first one but the one I kept from 2013-2017.
