Got the playfield out.

Everything is so beat and questionable mechanically I just pretty much clipped every switch and socket right off nothing there worth reusing.
Cleaned all those harnesses and put them in the sun while I was cooking multitasking.

Speaking of TMNT I finally got around to fixing the damaged one sent in.
I never deal in damage claims normally it is just a waste of time but this was for a good customer and he has always been top shelf to deal with so I took it on.
The work doesn’t bother me it’s the claims process I have no time or patience for.
Anyway damage was fairly minimal. You couldn’t tell that by looking at the box though it was smashed pretty good.

Front was about the same. Stripped that. 7ABB0BCF-B818-42E4-ABF4-F5FE4F8CFCCA (resized).jpeg7ABB0BCF-B818-42E4-ABF4-F5FE4F8CFCCA (resized).jpeg

Filled the damage. This Stern wood is like that put together furniture so the only thing that works is fiberglass filler. 0A51150D-92ED-4EF7-BDE6-6B626597C837 (resized).jpeg0A51150D-92ED-4EF7-BDE6-6B626597C837 (resized).jpeg

Installed the new decals that were a complete pain in the ass to get. Done with that.

Chris,
Having done several amateur restorations on original C-37, consensus pink seems to be close to this Montana rattle can color Pink Panther. The original color can be seen under the coin door frame for reference. I use poster board hand cut stencils to attain a factory style overspray effect. The rest of the paint is touched up original. The yellow seems to hold its color fairly well.

That looks great. Nice authentic job.
I am not going for an original look on this project but more something that could look original if there were nothing to compare it to.
I made a shade that is more in tune with the backglass and other art because there just isn’t a color tie in with the original pink(plurple really)shade anywhere in sight of the color package.

I could easily match the original if that were a criteria for the project it’s just not what I am after unless told to do so specifically. If not I will usually go with what I think suits the total art package best.
Not a purist restoration this time around.

#9260 2 years ago

Judge Dredd looks so much better than the original art package! "emergecy" vehicle exit plastic on Judge Dredd got my attention (shooter lane plastic). No matter how much you try to do a perfect restoration, there are always forces involved beyond our control

Tough crowd tonight.
Lol!
I wondered why there were two of these.I think I can actually fix that for a change. Honestly I picked the other because the neon orange was a better match to the set.
Always a method to the madness.

Not your fault, you did nothing wrong. The plastic set is screen printed, like in the good old days: multiple stencils, time consuming process.
Unfortunately there was a typo error, and nobody realized this during the process.
Re-run was not possible, due to time and cost reasons.

Plan B was to create and add a shooter lane plastic to the set, with correct text. This plastic is digitally printed.

And here comes the dilemma: we have a very nice screen printed plastic set (very rare) with vivid and deep colors... With a minor issue. On the digital print the text is correct, but the colors are not so vibrant. As Chris stated, the neon is not there. The standard orange is "weak" on the digital print. Old screen printed process is way better.

Personally I will use the screen printed plastic in my JD restoration.

Totally agree. Now I want a JD!

#9266 2 years ago

hi!

On my jd the emergency exit plastic was raised half an inch or so. When the play field was raised in upright position the whole play field was resting on this plastics against the back box. I lowered the plastics so it rested on the metal like yours but it looks like you stuck it beneath the metal on the left side. Looks much better, I’ll do tat to I think.

The one complaint I have about HEP is that Chris never posts enough pics of the finished pins.

Seriously, we all appreciate the pinball eye candy from every angle in excellent lighting. You have no idea just how much we all admire and respect your work.

I am back at it with the BSD.

Pulled the boards. Some typical hacks nothing too surprising. Actually given everything else I was expecting more.

I try to but sometimes you just end up on the wrong side of one of these.
It comes with the territory.
Been a bit of a losing streak lately with some of these but I usually try to just dedicate a portion of the year to tough or lousy projects.Lousy meaning they are going to be tough to profit off of. If you don’t they will pile up and that’s all you will have to work with.

Speaking of old ones. Today is my 23rd wedding anniversary.
It’s also the 10th anniversary of this SC.
For 10 years I have warehoused this game. Moved it around and taken good care of it. It’s been a completely mutual proposition between the owner and I and he has gotten many other games through here along the way but when shuffling the deck I decided today is just the day. It’s a sign. It’s getting done and going home.
No it doesn’t take 10 years to get a game through here don’t start that rumor!

Cleaned it and then evaluated the repaints needed.
Some minor break throughs from leveling the stacks and a few questionable gaps in the art at one heads side saucers. My initial alignment was dead on so it’s probably an acceptable tolerance for the era but I can correct it to make it identical side to side so it’s best to do that.

To make those corrections I use another stencil set. Anytime I stencil I buy two sets. Between a potential application issue and my desire to truly level the paint work it’s a must.

Rarely do I need the whole thing usually just a few pieces. I can do this manually in a crunch but the convenience of an extra set is better.

Final clear is applied. This is a 60/40 gloss level so it will gloss down as it dries overnight.
The pink looks a bit burgundy in the pictures I realize or at least it does as I view it on my phone but it isn’t it’s just lighting or the phones camera reaction to the blinding lights of the spray room. Once dried tomorrow I will put it out in the daylight for a better color representation.

I am happy with that let’s proceed.

High_End_Pins Nice JD. With the alternate translite I suspect that the backbox flashers aren't coordinated with the characters as they are in the original translite.

Possibly not but it best suits the color change. I had the original translite as well as a mirrored CPR to pick from while building it.
For my purposes and in my eye the one I used works best but the game will return to the owner with all the other options and he can choose what’s most important to him.
There are always going to be some victories and defeats with any drastic alternatives or changes if you are solely comparing it to an original.

Nice looking Em. It's going to top notch when done.

Ok they sucked me into the GNR playfield thread yesterday but I am back home.
BSD playfield is prepped and ready to build. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
The original is based and built off the textured metal playfield rails image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
They are rusty and beat. I could refinish them. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
Instead I have a nice new oak set from Taylor. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
Making the change from the metal based to the wood based will make a couple hardware complications that I will have to address.
On the metal base the standoffs thread directly to the rails. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

I will need new standoffs and the bases they attach to to convert to wood rails. Something like this. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
I ordered new ones and new standoffs so it will look fresh.

You're more than welcome for the flash lamp PCBs! Good payback for all the entertainment and knowledge we get from your thread.

It was a cool project to learn the software to lay out a PCB and get them fabricated. Minimum order of 5 -- I'd never use them so you may as well keep them on hand.

I made the lamp holes a little tight but they do fit.

I used www.kicad.org and had them made at https://jlcpcb.com. Watched a few YouTube videos and it was enough to get it drawn up in a few hours.

had to go read the thread since we don't see you much "out there" in Pinside, interesting stuff for sure

I am finally getting somewhere on the BSD.
It has been extremely slow going because even the few parts I have to reuse need extra attention.
Some of the metal post just couldn’t be salvaged and required replacement.

How much do you need to refer to photos when building up a playfield? Or at this point, do you know BSD so well you just know where everything goes? I referred to your photos many times while putting a BSD back together!

Depends on the game. Usually I refer to the pictures I have at some point on every build because often things come in assembled wrong or missing something.
I still use old school methods in that regard.
This is my BSD folder. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
I have built a pretty good library over the years.

So much easier than the computer or phone.
