Quoted from PinMonk:

Do you ever clear over cabinets once you finish decaling them to give them a really nice, glossy or semi-glossy finish, or does the issue of chipping the clear at corners, etc over time make that not a good idea?

Great questions that I’ve also had. Hope you don’t mind me tacking on a few other cabinet clear coat questions.

I’m curious about how much of the cabinets you clear coat after painting black. Is it all of the painted surfaces? And is it the same glossy clear you use on the playfields or something different?

I don’t. I have and can but it’s less than ideal because when you clear coat over decals it must be treated as if you are clearcoating over plastic.
In order to do that properly you need to clean them like plastic(potential for that cleaner to ruin the ink on the decal),now abrade it (might scratch through the ink)then you must spray a plastic etch material(not usually truly clear a bit cloudy and another risk of ink interactions).
Now you can clear it.
After cleared it is more susceptible to peeling or flaking than a typically cleared surface.
In other words much more risk than reward.
I see people do it and have myself but knowing what I do I know it’s not truly an upgrade beyond the cosmetics and the downsides for me outweigh the glamour of it.

clearing a cabinet is truly worth it for stenciled ones i found, never thought doing it on decal was a good ide.

New week.
I spent the weekend doing the usual things and did manage to get a good start on a massive coil build.
The games I am building coil assemblies for are two TZs and the BSD.
It’s a lot to take on but it will make things easier later. 4928EFCC-573B-4697-9EAE-F108D85F890F (resized).jpeg4928EFCC-573B-4697-9EAE-F108D85F890F (resized).jpeg1471012E-B37D-4609-B204-99E44A905C45 (resized).jpeg1471012E-B37D-4609-B204-99E44A905C45 (resized).jpeg

The big advantage is I can easily keep up with wiring color needs for the TZs while only having one actually apart and BSD uses the exact same flipper configuration. 0DAF369C-7B02-44ED-992E-AAC7D772F569 (resized).jpeg0DAF369C-7B02-44ED-992E-AAC7D772F569 (resized).jpegCB792473-4AE1-438B-A731-4E4DAB65F4F3 (resized).jpegCB792473-4AE1-438B-A731-4E4DAB65F4F3 (resized).jpeg19A6419C-C394-4FA0-8E83-E6B9BF84E56D (resized).jpeg19A6419C-C394-4FA0-8E83-E6B9BF84E56D (resized).jpeg

The BSD is such a turd. From the rust and corrosion to the hacked wires(more on that later)it is a job that is proving to be above and beyond even the normal process here.

Fleet of jet bumpers. They all use the violet orange strand between both titles with brown/? On the other side so for the mass build best to keep the brown generic to avoid confusion

So you're in the "you can polish a turd" camp?

All the TZ coils are done for both games.
One has a few less brackets because they are game specific and I will need to grab the brackets but I still made up the coils with the wiring so it will be easy.

I was ambivalent to the black cabinet graphics, but those graphics and the gold trim are stunning. Another HEP masterpiece!

#9218 2 years ago

Agreed, Judge Dredd is awesome.

#9219 2 years ago

Such a good game too! I'd never played one till i saw what Chris was doing with the blacked out one. Then i ordered the stickers and speaker panel, then i found a game.

It's sitting next to a Twilight Zone that's on loan at my place now and i'm fucked if i can see how Twilight Zone is 5 times the price here. Dredd's a better game. 5 shots of the top flipper 3 off the middle one with out counting drops, good times.

Theme integration makes sense on Dredd (and i can't remember the movie), playing TZ after not watching the show since i was a kid, and i'm thinking, what has a clock and a camera and a gumball machine got to do with anything? Disjointed mess theme wise.

I 100% agree with you. JD is such an underrated pin and a blast to play. And just a note, if you decide to revisit the theme and watch a Judge Dredd movie, stay clear of the Stallone movie as that movie is a disgrace to the franchise and should be banished. Watch the 2012 movie simply called "Dredd" with Carl Urban. That is as close to the comic as you will get, which is what the pin is based on. The JD comics are a masterpiece and great time if anyone is still into reading comics.

I had to feather that out. Etch it. E81CA9D7-9FFB-41B8-8D3E-A8B05800CC15 (resized).jpegE81CA9D7-9FFB-41B8-8D3E-A8B05800CC15 (resized).jpeg
Trim the decals back so the paint and clear HH as a fresh edge to seal around. Cant totally eliminate all its flaws without decal removal. I have some replacement decals but they pretty much suck so I would rather do what I can with the original. Is your speaker panel contains the 3 flasher PCB?
If not, then Chris I can offer 3x single flasher PCB as plan B.

No worries there. Glad to just have something correct to use or copy instead of guessing.
Appreciate the offer of the sockets too Davi.
I looked at the board in my old teardown pictures and it’s something I can easily duplicate with normal lay down flasher sockets.
I think the board is mostly a manufacturing convenience.

If you want an unpopulated BSD flasher board PM me. I made some when I found my BSD had an Addams Family board in it! They make a minimum of 5 boards so I have 4 I don’t need.

#9235 2 years ago

Thanks for all the help on the BSD speaker panel. It looks like I have been offered both parts needed.
It’s much appreciated and without going into details let me just say that it’s going to a good cause above and beyond just making a game complete and correct.

#9236 2 years ago

Putting a little time into my TZ project here and there.
Right now I have a few more projects in process than I would normally like to but it’s going just fine.
This happens sometimes when you need to start something in order to complete something else or if you need to get the boards out of something and send them out or gut one to copy a cabinet.
It eats up floor space and shelving without adding to progress.
Eventually you have what you need and it’s time to circle back around to those projects.
I do that while I filter in the games that can move straight through like this TZ so it’s not a focal point in the thread right now but it’s happening. FF056102-7082-4FEA-8EDC-733A3C06E97C (resized).jpegFF056102-7082-4FEA-8EDC-733A3C06E97C (resized).jpeg

I put the old C37 head out in the sun.
This helps match colors although I am not trying to truly match these. They may be correct or faded/aged.
I just to want to clearly see what I am starting with for reference then I will make colors that either match those or enhance what they are meant to be.

Based and specked.
Good likeness to the original in the specks category. 0D0B3D5D-FFC1-49CD-9669-304501F81A5E (resized).jpeg0D0B3D5D-FFC1-49CD-9669-304501F81A5E (resized).jpeg

The C37 cabinet was a bit more complicated than I thought it might be.
I wanted to get it right in terms of style.
I noticed how transparent the colors were and that you could see the specks within them. 071D160E-72F2-463E-8345-95EFA2C2128C (resized).jpeg071D160E-72F2-463E-8345-95EFA2C2128C (resized).jpeg

I set out to do the same because the baseline for me is factory correct then if I can enhance that style from there I will.
The colors on this original cabinet are pretty washed out and faded so I studied the flyer, backglass and playfield to come up with shades that I think are best suited without going to far outside of the original scheme.
Yellow is diluted and sprayed. The yellow transparency turned out perfectly. 8DDFE855-C5BB-4134-AC71-4B609CE9E42F (resized).jpeg8DDFE855-C5BB-4134-AC71-4B609CE9E42F (resized).jpeg

Then I dialed the pink up. Turned it a little more towards the magenta side. Still pink but more in line with the backglass shades.

The cabinet is stunning Chris! Pretty mind blowing that you can just recreate them like that. Can't wait for this one to come home, going to be the highlight of my collection.

Rust and smashed wires. Pretty much every screw I remove goes right in the trash.
