I'm really liking those black chrome wireframes.

Quoted from Mr_Tantrum:

Thanks. Chris at HRA supplied them.
I am going to do Shadow 2 differently but I could see doing that black nickel on most as the default choice. It’s always going to work with Shadows colorways.

You have the POWER!!!!

Now you know why we went into MRS manufacturing!

Does yours have a splitter to make the original switch still functional and use the MRS as a confirmation switch/back up?

I ended up making a splitter for this one just so the original switch is still functional seemed like cheap and easy insurance(two switches are better than one) and keeps everything in its place. Probably not practical for all applications but works well on this one.

Clever! We do not have a splitter (although we thought about it a lot) - we've had good success with our MRS' by their lonesome....since our MRS is our own design - we were able to have greater sensitivity from the originals - like the Sega/DE version you have there which tend to max out at 6mm....and we were able to alter the aperture of the detection as well...that said, you've got it down perfectly.....it's the best way to approach the problem.

i am surprise you are able to reuse those cheap wpc plastic light "socket". I found a lot get cooked and brittle, do you just replace the broken ones and keep the whole thing instead of using metal socket?

It’s pretty rare. They usually are cooked and I have to swap over to metal but these were all good and popped out without issue.
This particular games issues seem to be primarily moisture related.

Quick health and fitness update.
First it’s Halibut season.
I landed a big one. Well I bought one

I am trying to get back in longer distance running shape between nearly breaking my foot a few months back and dreading passing people face to face on the sidewalks I had shied away from it and gravitated towards lifting, rowing etc.
Feet just don’t seem to shuffle quite as fast anymore but I am going to work on it . First time going past 3 miles in over a year. 51158367-E70C-4099-89F5-1866848F3A12 (resized).png51158367-E70C-4099-89F5-1866848F3A12 (resized).png

Funny you post something like that.
Lately Curtis and I have been binging on old Hee Haw episodes during our beer flights.
Watching Curtis react to Buck Owens do songs like Proud Mary is too much fun !
He seems so entertained but disturbed at the same time.

Why does that look like Pike Place Market when your in NC?

#9018 3 years ago

Good job getting back into running. Starting up is the hardest part. Mix in some days on the ElliptiGo to give yourself a rest as you get back into those longer runs.

Red Centaur looks sweet!

That’s it.
My fish guy is Jaison over there. He text me pictures of the selection then again after its filleted.Always follows up to make sure I am happy.
Great guy.
Having grown up much closer to the coast then later moving here I can honestly say our seafood selection this far inland sucks!!!!
Most of the time it’s old ,picked through or previously frozen. I prefer to at least start out with a nice whole fresh caught fish and take it from there making sure it gets handled properly. Cost a little more but you know exactly what you are getting.

#9021 3 years ago

such a great thread Chris, really enjoying all the restore jobs....

speaking of fish songs and funnies, here is another for everyone. very cheesy.

Thanks. Hopefully I can get back into doing it in the morning before breakfast and the midday heat .
I always liked the feeling of it best fasted and fresh. At least the shorter ones.

Great job!!
It’s awesome that you could reverse your diabetes.
I am pretty sure I often derail the thread all on my own depending on what you think the thread is about.
If you think it’s about pinball then I definitely do.
If you think it’s about HEP then I never have.

Beer, exercise, and fresh seafood element to this thread is just as good as the pinball restoration element, IMHO

Managed to get some work done after all that.
Finishing up the teardown on Shadow 2 (BO)

Screened the heads for both Shadow 2 and JD
9D33F1C1-1488-4108-8479-8994D0660AE3 (resized).jpeg9D33F1C1-1488-4108-8479-8994D0660AE3 (resized).jpeg43319CE0-CACB-4153-9DC9-8A0339A92682 (resized).jpeg43319CE0-CACB-4153-9DC9-8A0339A92682 (resized).jpeg

The JD came in with some supplied powder coated parts.
They are mostly used and unassembled
The coin door is pretty rough.
First there is a hole in the bezel. A08933D0-84EE-4A90-AAB7-E2236A591574 (resized).jpegA08933D0-84EE-4A90-AAB7-E2236A591574 (resized).jpeg
Second the coating is so thick that nothing fits together and when it does it destroys the coating if you want things to actually function. You know like the coin flaps flapping.
AAF40DE7-B665-4E9B-A987-A42FFA5BB769 (resized).jpegAAF40DE7-B665-4E9B-A987-A42FFA5BB769 (resized).jpeg

I broke down a nice door and harvested the parts I need and the harness.
I used some black and gold to mimic the powder as well as possible. 408A14CD-DE3B-4893-B664-5DFFAC433C5C (resized).jpeg408A14CD-DE3B-4893-B664-5DFFAC433C5C (resized).jpegE1084FD8-6D30-4A15-8850-DEC7BE4B24A7 (resized).jpegE1084FD8-6D30-4A15-8850-DEC7BE4B24A7 (resized).jpeg
Then cleared that along with the Shadow 2 apron and JD apron. That JD apron will need some work probably but I will clear it for now and see how far that takes me. It really is. He needs to go to the groomers this week though.
That nice big head gets pretty messy after a couple weeks of wrestling practice with Mater and Nemo plus who knows what else he gets into.
He’s a sneaky little shit have to keep a close eye on him. 0FCE013E-495C-44C8-8051-097C5FAE8319 (resized).jpeg0FCE013E-495C-44C8-8051-097C5FAE8319 (resized).jpeg

#9034 3 years ago
Quoted from DaMoib:

Nope, this thread is about the HEP lifestyle...

It’s been a rough lifestyle this week after a promising start
Bad parts, delayed shipments/parts and more that I won’t even note because I don’t want anyone to think I am talking about them because I may or may not be
I couldn’t even put it into words or document all the set backs this week. One of the worst in HEP history but that’s how it goes sometimes. Just a bit more often these days. Hence the lack of good updates.
Anyway let’s not dwell on that it’s Friday.
First thank you Mr_Tantrum for making me an excellent emblem of my avatar. He had no idea where it would go but once I saw it I knew what it was perfect for.

Also some nice shadow backboard decals that will pop up eventually. That shadow is another story
I did end up pulling a TZ because I think I at least have everything on hand to see that through without interruption. 832BF2CD-99C4-43B4-9589-3FBFDE684C66 (resized).jpeg832BF2CD-99C4-43B4-9589-3FBFDE684C66 (resized).jpeg
I have also been able to get back into Centaur mode.
Had to take a break because making the harness detachable is so tedious and time consuming. I'm not a drinker, but even that makes me say "beer me".

#9036 3 years ago

I've always wondered how you seem to move so fast, and it seems you always have the parts you need, you must have some amazing organized system. Me, feels like I'm always waiting for parts. No matter how many boatloads of cash I spend to have parts I need, while doing the restore, I find myself constantly needing to order additional parts. And the time to locate what you need, the extra money spent on shipping for these last minute parts, gets frustrating! Enjoy the steak and beer!

#9037 3 years ago

Well it started off well. You packed and shipped one killer Shadow!

Also, I am interested in that TZ. From a distance it looks pretty nice.

I really work hard behind the scenes to have everything in place before I even start and there is so much time effort and money invested in infrastructure that it probably hampers growth or profits .It’s not a concern for me I like the smooth transitions from game to game and project to project way more than an extra check in the bank or some green paper.
What can happen every so often though is enough things just don’t line up or come through and all active projects come to a stand still and I have to start another at a less than ideal time to keep progressing.
Right now I am working actively on
1)Mystic(was initially sent a severely warped playfield had to find another ,owner wants a mod that doesn’t even exist yet made by XPin)
2)Shadow 2(pulled the cabinet art marked for it and it’s garbage. Ordered more but it comes from overseas SLOW these days)
3)STTNG (bought and received two terrible playfields at full price was only offered token refunds not decent replacements, cabinet art on the slow boat from AU already losing my ass on this one honestly)
4)TOTAN(bought cabinet art in the states its washed out licensed hologram worthy but not useable in my eyes so I had to order more from overseas. Slow
boat.Brass trim requested and hard to get all that at once these days)
5)Tommy(Waiting on a cabinet build in the states and parts from Europe)
6)C37 (cabs being built no complaints just in process)
7) Centaur Charcoal( have everything I need but it’s a slow roller a filler project because of the complexity of the conversion and upgrades )
8)JD (this project went so off the rails I just couldn’t prepare for it. It’s been one thing after the other based on what the perception was and what the reality is and I am happy to say the owner is cool and understands .We have found a way to overcome many obstacles but it isn’t flowing as a result. A lot of stop and go)
To have eight projects in process and none that can easily move to completion beyond my control is rare and frustrating but it does happen and it’s not a big deal but probably worth explaining just to keep things transparent and interesting.

I knew you juggle many projects and the supply chain is long and complicated. But I had no idea the scope of it.
I’m just one of your customers worrying about my pins. I can only imagine how many are managing at one time.

Quoted from High_End_Pins:

Thanks for taking the time to detail that, I think it's helpful for people to understand the behind the scenes hurdles. I can only imagine the organizational complexity of working on so many games at the same time. Having to be careful not to mix up parts and lose track of where stuff is. Losing momentum and forgetting where you left off is another possibility. Waiting for a part from overseas can take forever nowadays, the postal system is so overburdened with everyone buying on line. Getting an inferior quality part is a big hold up, frustrating, and then they don't want to take it back. I know in my case, some of these types of delays can add weeks to the restoration. On top of it all you document everything which adds another layer of complexity. Thanks again for sharing all these things, priceless!

For most of us that are "self employed" it takes about 2 hours "behind the scenes work" for ever hour of work we are actually doing. People with "real jobs" don't realize what goes into being successfully self employed.

Chris takes things to a level that has amazed me for years. I have been self employed since I got out of college (over 40 years ago) and only wish I could be even 50% as organized as he is. A true master at work!

Typically talented people (artist type talent) are not super organized. Chris does it all - he is mechanically inclined, a true artist, an amazing painter, and has great business sense. You don't find people like him often!

Nice to see you back in here Skip thanks so much for the kind words I am not sure I am worthy of them but I definitely am trying to be.
There are many things I am not good at so I am really just lucky that I found a niche to combine the ones I am and make a living at it. So it’s very humbling.
I quit school in the 10th grade right around the same time my parents lost pretty much everything they owned and as a result anything I know or have I learned or earned on my own. No schools,no loans,no rich relatives or lucky breaks.
At 48 it’s not much different than it was at 18 I just get out here and work nothing more nothing less and the results of that have been beyond anything I would have ever imagined .Not so much financially but the ability to raise a family off a dependable income and build a good name and trust of myself amongst total strangers have been the biggest highlights to date.

In total agreement of these sentiments. Sometimes people tell me how lucky i am to have a successful business.

I spose i am lucky, but it's luck that's come about from a life full of hard work, overtime and second jobs. One of my motto's is 'you don't get to snatch the brass ring unless you are standing up in the saddle'.

Glad to see Pinside back up and running.
After reading Robins post I am suspending this thread until it is stable again as I don’t want to drag things down.

It’s the best thread on Pinside! Guess I’ll wait a few more days to get my ‘fix’ when Chris starts posting again!
