Rebuilt the phurba mechs.
Good and solid.

Getting pretty close on my red Centaur.

Quoted from High_End_Pins:

The clear is brittle it shatters and it’s as thick as a clear plastic washer.

In your estimation, how many layers of clear is that?
Also, does that mean you have to pre-drill all the holes to prevent screws from doing that?

#8853 3 years ago
Quoted from High_End_Pins:

That’s all I am going to say or show about it...

Quoted from GRUMPY:

So how are you getting the play fields with out the clear, and is this something anyone can get?

Quoted from PBFan:

...So what primarily causes the difference? Incorrect product. Poor application? Poor technique? poor environment?

Quoted from PinMonk:

Quoted from High_End_Pins:

That’s all I am going to say or show about it.
I don’t have a problem with anyone or what they are doing.
My main concern is I just don’t want to deal with these clears on my own projects and that’s why.
By showing it hopefully it explains why thoroughly.

Thank you for showing this. I find it very interesting since I am looking to restore my Centaur and I happen to obtain one of the Red letter playfields a few years ago. I haven't had any clear added to it however I will need to go back and see if it was already on it at that thickness. Additionally, I would have to agree the the two coats make the playfield look better also. The one playfield you showed that had the clear previously applied was way too thick.

#8855 3 years ago

After trying the predrill method with similar results I decided to shave the playfield down and put down a nice thin flexible coat of clear in its place.
Good finishes bend but don’t break ideally in my eyes.
This isn’t a documentation about why I am better than someone else or anything like that. I am not perfect and I have had to learn things along the way like anyone else.
It is a documentation of the challenges I face doing this work and solutions I try to find to problems beyond my control it also helps highlight why I do not want your “already ready to go playfield “.

First the predrill. 497B5E4F-BEC9-4579-A78E-65215F2A35BF (resized).jpeg497B5E4F-BEC9-4579-A78E-65215F2A35BF (resized).jpeg

Drill everything out.It was really slow. I ended up running brand new bits backwards then forwards Crazy how much extra effort was needed. Then it’s off to the paint shop. Using the massive chip as a gauge A0A99950-B226-47E7-A748-0B8C3A4F3A01 (resized).jpegA0A99950-B226-47E7-A748-0B8C3A4F3A01 (resized).jpeg
I shave it with 180,then 320,then 500.
Prior to clear I will use 800 but right now I need to remove as much material as possible without breaking through. I cover the roll over inserts and will just dust a light coat on them at the very end so I don’t re-ruin them. BDBC4304-C5BE-4963-A0D7-BC61BDD85725 (resized).jpegBDBC4304-C5BE-4963-A0D7-BC61BDD85725 (resized).jpeg

Cleared. Nice thin coat just to hopefully refresh the surface and make a more useable playfield of what was provided.

Hey Chris, easy question for you . . . for WPC-089 pins (Getaway, in particular), what gauge wire should I use on the switch matrix? 18AWG?

These last few posts are my favourite type. I love all the restoration you do, but watching you have a difficult time and work through it really helps me learn.

Yes 22awg for switches ,optos ,most feature lamp runs.

18awg for solenoids, main GI runs things like that.

The red Centaur now has an owner.
Wasn’t actively trying to sell it I almost never buy or sell games. Several people asked me about it but I didn’t want any pressure or to put a dollar figure on it until I had a good sense of what I was doing and had in it.

I ended up with just a touch over $10k in it of my own money with the cost of the base game and parts that’s not even considering labor so it was interesting to verify something I already know all too well. No free lunches in this hobby/business!!
A local popped by and could not believe it so I figured I should take that nice easy path of least resistance and give it a home .He was very realistic about the true value of the game and when it’s all said and done I end up where I would be having done it for any other customer but I had the freedom to do exactly as I pleased and the benefit of it to reference for the conversion.
Anyway it’s staying local so that’s nice I will be able to hand it off personally and I can start working it towards completion.

The playfield build up is getting there. The reinvention or modernization has had very few hiccups thus far.
I am really curious to see how it plays.
Doubt that there are major differences but I anticipate the ball will roll over the switches easier, the slings will be a bit snappier and likely the pop bumpers as well.
The playfield sliding is already a huge improvement.

That's perfect. I hope you do a few more of your own choosing too, the market is there for high quality interpretations of games as you know.

Let’s hope not. I learned a long time ago not to go to anyone’s house specifically to play pinball.
It’s like making the chef peel potatoes after a long day in the kitchen.

Man! I never even knew Red Centaur was available for sale. I would’ve been a serious contender!

Been the goal from the start, Chris said it was a speccie.

That's how i got my Sorcerer, uncivil_engineer had a restore thread on here and i PM'ed him and he kindly agreed to sell it to me and ship it to Australia before he'd even finished the restore.

Curtis in his second pic looks like he's doing his best McEnroe impression of "Come on, man!", like you just called his serve out when it was clearly an ace.

If that second pic is of you serving then you have some work to do on your form (also, you might want to stand behind the line).
My second thought was it looks like your lining up the ball to send a header across the net (which would be quite impressive).

Yeah. Those were just photo ops .We are not taking it that seriously yet. Right now just trying to keep the ball moving between us. We don’t care if it’s a foul, bounced twice whatever just want to get some cardio in a less boring way than the usual running, biking, rowing routines.
I will say it was fun I could see figuring out how to do it right.

My whoop strap had it in the options so I got a good sense of the activity.

Hopefully you know I was just giving you a hard time on the tennis pics. I haven't stepped on a court in years, but I use to really enjoy the game.

Foil dinners take me back to my Boy Scout days. The best was to core an apply, fill the center with red hots, wrap in foil and put on the campfire until the apple was soft - yum!

Oh yeah I know you guys love busting my balls. I am always happy to supply the material.

Hard to beat a foil pack sometimes. Everything comes out nice and juicy with no mess.

Set up the Judge Dredd.
I am looking forward to it. I did one about 15 years ago but so much has changed since then.
This one is going to be a bit more challenging because it’s already semi taken apart.

The CPUs are usually ok the fliptronics 2 is not ideal but I will see how it runs at the end with them before making any changes. 90F74DB4-5448-432A-A77F-1C9CE634A6F0 (resized).jpeg90F74DB4-5448-432A-A77F-1C9CE634A6F0 (resized).jpeg0134A1C6-82EA-49F1-A2B3-79BA629E6A74 (resized).jpeg0134A1C6-82EA-49F1-A2B3-79BA629E6A74 (resized).jpegDBB37639-D828-49F5-8F9C-17A6937B831F (resized).jpegDBB37639-D828-49F5-8F9C-17A6937B831F (resized).jpeg56165AA3-47AE-49CE-BD92-22365E3CC445 (resized).jpeg56165AA3-47AE-49CE-BD92-22365E3CC445 (resized).jpeg750ED116-3502-4D2E-8648-0982AF64A338 (resized).jpeg750ED116-3502-4D2E-8648-0982AF64A338 (resized).jpegFFE5C4C2-7087-4FB5-95FE-F03DAA128839 (resized).jpegFFE5C4C2-7087-4FB5-95FE-F03DAA128839 (resized).jpeg

Turn Curtis loose on the easy stuff. One thing you need to learn through repetition is how things go together.
The best way to learn that is figuring out how they come apart. Not just once but over and over again.
By doing that it all starts to make sense and you can see the massive carryover from one game to the other and get a much better understanding of the basic platform. 11FC8471-694A-4602-A8F2-6D5A514E91D6 (resized).jpeg11FC8471-694A-4602-A8F2-6D5A514E91D6 (resized).jpeg

All these extras are too confusing I just remove them and revisit what I actually need or how I would do it later. ECC4B421-95BF-454F-8808-EE0D1411DA83 (resized).jpegECC4B421-95BF-454F-8808-EE0D1411DA83 (resized).jpeg

We will sort it out one harness at a time.
The previous markings are intelligent and make sense but not needed here. 6B1D2E40-734E-48A8-8386-8E1E3AA0CF3C (resized).jpeg6B1D2E40-734E-48A8-8386-8E1E3AA0CF3C (resized).jpeg2B0B56EB-A4DA-4798-B197-4737E4679B0A (resized).jpeg2B0B56EB-A4DA-4798-B197-4737E4679B0A (resized).jpeg0C1433D8-9CA5-4633-A0F2-845D02F32630 (resized).jpeg0C1433D8-9CA5-4633-A0F2-845D02F32630 (resized).jpeg

The cabinet art on the JD looks really nice (no fade). Is it original or has it been replaced at some point over the years?

It’s been replaced but runs a good bit too short.

Interesting. Looking forward to seeing how you choose to address it (if at all).

Quoted from High_End_Pins:

Set up the Judge Dredd.
I am looking forward to it. I did one about 15 years ago but so much has changed since then.
This one is going to be a bit more challenging because it’s already semi taken apart.
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

Jesus, those powder coated rails are hideous and the homemade LED light strip on the top of the back box is clumsy as hell. Look forward to seeing your magic on this on, particularly the cab.

I have been wiring away on the red Centaur playfield.
On this one I wanted a fully detachable harness. Had no idea it would be so involved but it’s happening.
I just need to plug it all up and loom it.

Gut the C-37 so the cabinet builder can copy the cabinet and the platers can start working on this crusty metal.

Shadow 2 is in the house.
Should get my new shadow cabinets in a day or two. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

Will be glad. The shadow 1 playfield has been ready for a cabinet for a week or so now.

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
#8898 3 years ago

Just at a glance I am going to bet Shadow 2 is a better overall starting platform than Shadow 1 but it doesn’t really matter.

One thing I can see already is I am glad that I had two Shadow cabinets built
This one has ugly factory voids in the plus.
When they are this close to the surface it sucks

Again I want to confirm I am really glad I had two shadow cabinets built.
