Quoted from High_End_Pins:

Building up the new Spirit cabinet.
I started to go a different route with this one being that it is #4 but all the trim as well as the door was in nice condition so I decided the really clean and polish that up instead of changing.
I”ll save that for something that really needs it.

I really like those Gottlieb textured side rails, the pattern is mesmerizing up close:

The Knockout playfield is ready to reinsert the insert roll overs. 4566D951-0AAC-421E-AA68-0DE4FB6EA3FD (resized).jpeg4566D951-0AAC-421E-AA68-0DE4FB6EA3FD (resized).jpeg
This playfield came with orange ones.

Just can’t see that after looking at the green ones in the games playfield

I pulled those. I can’t promise these will line up perfectly in terms of registration but I will do all I can to fill in the gaps. It just makes more sense to use the green despite the extra work. Knockout cabinet paint job.
The color choices have been a little more complex than it might seem.
The white used is actually more of an off white and even that looks shades brighter than the aged original.
You can see the contrast though with the stencil applied. D51CE611-8DA3-42E4-8F45-C9DA85E8568F (resized).jpegD51CE611-8DA3-42E4-8F45-C9DA85E8568F (resized).jpeg6162AA65-F95C-4AEC-996D-B744F6CD6093 (resized).jpeg6162AA65-F95C-4AEC-996D-B744F6CD6093 (resized).jpeg

First color looking at my original it is a barely covered pale pink that I suspect is faded. Looking at the flyer/other examples it’s a magenta.
I went magenta because I typically trust the flyer most and bolder colors tend to stencil best if given an alternative.

That looks great, right down to the flecks of paint. Curious, did you put some on a brush and flick it on there? That’s how I would have attempted it...

Thanks.
I spray them with a paint gun.
This comes up often so next time I run into it I will make a video. Meant to do that this time.

Care to share any tips or tricks on clear coating. Everything you clear besides playfields seem to be a one and done for you.
How do you get it so good every time on first try ...or are you just showing us the after pictures lol.
Sometimes on cabinets and other stuff i will luck out and have to not touch it but most times it will require sanding/buffing a blemish or 3 or 8.. out
I'm sure it is because you are a master at this! I wouldn't mind seeing a video of you clearing a cabinet and doing splatter/webbing as well for us masters in training at HEP class.
Where do i leave my class fees envelope?

Disappointed no snow pictures. Curtis did not take that little lady out for her first snow? Here in the Carolina’s first sign of snow and everything shuts down, milk and bread are at a premium.

We didn’t get any over here. Maybe a couple flurries and a cold rain.

Here is a really good picture of the difference in gloss levels from full to matte.
I dialed this EM repaint down to a 50/50 gloss matte for a more correct look.
I left the chocks gloss so it helps highlight the contrast. 6CE21B91-A9AC-458C-988E-807EDC854557 (resized).jpeg6CE21B91-A9AC-458C-988E-807EDC854557 (resized).jpeg

It depends but in general I try to take excellent care of myself and my health so I operate as safely as I can but do realize there are just certain occupational hazards that come along with this type of work.

Playfield is installed as powered up.
Just a couple small details left.

Quoted from High_End_Pins:

Cleaned and polished what I could without going crazy. I had the game working well at teardown so my philosophy on EMs is if it ain’t broke don’t fix it!

I will be curious to find out with this EM if it will start up and run and play as intended, upon first try, as lots of EMs are pretty finicky, even if working fine previous to a cleaning or restore or shopping. My bet is that HEP will win out.

Knockout.
Lots of work lots more to do. No end in sight

First I have to strip the old playfield soI can drill and dimple the NOS. CC543DF1-514C-47C8-94E3-EDDCB98E43FC (resized).jpegCC543DF1-514C-47C8-94E3-EDDCB98E43FC (resized).jpeg

Now I sand all the newly placed insert rollovers level with the playfield

They all set just a touch higher which is my preference because I don’t want to ruin the action of them trying to level them out with clear.

Clean it
We will see what it goes from there. I can only do so much with the registration around these since the art is already set around them but I m sure I can get them looking respectable.
I want to avoid a major repaint on this playfield because it would defeat the purpose of using a NoS playfield to start with and this one has already commanded a lot of work outside of what you would expect with that starting platform.

Other parts and pieces that will need to be dealt with are the arch and rails.
I am going to change up the color scheme on these to make a nicer looking total package CD8D5D17-D752-485B-9E0C-883C5E921EF3 (resized).jpegCD8D5D17-D752-485B-9E0C-883C5E921EF3 (resized).jpeg

Pretty awesome that you get to watch it happen as documented here. I can't wait for mine to come up so I can experience the same thing! I can only imagine how often you refresh Pinside looking to see if there are updates... Lol

Not just him, but his army of friends too! lol

It is very addicting... I love this thread and I cant wait to play a HEP Knock Out!

I masked and blacked out all the inserts on the Knockout playfield.
Again I can only do so much with the registration of the roll over inserts without really altering them or making them look very strange so on those I just created perfect circles at the highest tolerance possible and bridged the gaps.

The spinners are beat so I will strip etch paint and clear those. I plan on making a more appropriate design later but for now just want to get them back to zero. 3FF969AB-A072-47DF-9984-2AA314FC1AA0 (resized).jpeg3FF969AB-A072-47DF-9984-2AA314FC1AA0 (resized).jpeg7AB7E1BE-E932-4925-9100-FF6B459BC472 (resized).jpeg7AB7E1BE-E932-4925-9100-FF6B459BC472 (resized).jpeg

The apron will get more attention later it should match the shade on the cabinet right now it is bright white but nothing else was or is so I will clear it as a first step.

I based snd speckled the rails and arch to match the cabinet. It is the most logical choice to pull the scheme together without making it look too different.

Nice to see your hot water heater is to code (elevated the required distance above the floor). This was one of the punch list items I had to deal with when I sold my last house.

I also like your squirt bottle rod idea.

Knock out cabinet build is about complete now.
Took some work and some concessions to get that done.
The original shooter housing was trashed. Cosmetically I think I could have worked with it but the bushing inside was mushroomed and just about broke free from the housing. C89E5489-084A-4CA1-A645-E8D71CEBB44E (resized).jpegC89E5489-084A-4CA1-A645-E8D71CEBB44E (resized).jpeg

I had one of these I could spare so I polished that up 0149D2AC-4237-4BEB-8DBE-C0EF3B757A38 (resized).jpeg0149D2AC-4237-4BEB-8DBE-C0EF3B757A38 (resized).jpeg
And used it.

The chime box got as much attention as I could give it without plating
Plating would probably deaden the sound and might not work.
