Quoted from High_End_Pins:

The solenoid harness for the IJ KE game has been reworked with new connectors and all new flashed sockets that have short protections on the positive leads.
These were built into the harness as sub assemblies because in addition to the hacks that needed to be removed IJ tends to have a lot of areas where wiring runs shorter or tighter than I would like.

This is such a smart idea to put the clear tubing to prevent a short. Where do you source it?

Maybe a hobby shop for fuel lines for gas powered toys ? Aquarium store for tubing for water and air. Well stocked hardware store.

After taking a couple days off I was bored.
Not a sit on the couch and watch TV kind of guy.
Standing over a playfield with a few tools and a soldering iron is time consuming and tedious but not hard labor so I continued on making progress on my TOM local project.

New week.
Playfield is in the TOM.
I plan on finishing the Cyclopes also ,the wiring on that one turned into a much bigger job than I anticipated because the sockets, resistors and replacement of the bare braid .
It’s almost done one or two more sections left on that. Will put some pictures up when I am in front of it.
Another thing that needs to be done is getting the final finish done on the Spirit cabinet in order to begin the swap and make room for the knockout.
It’s a job all to itself figuring out the best order to do things to keep things moving especially when the current run has such a wide range of manufacturers and builds.
Right now I am working on a Williams WPC ,Bally EM,Game Plan, and a Gottlieb system 80.
That’s a pretty broad range to absorb all at once.

Final clear is applied to the Spirit cabinet.
Will gloss down as it dries overnight.

Now I can start prepping the knockout cabinet.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
I had been holding off on that because I also have a Playboy cabinet to get ready and they will use the same white base and hot pink during the painting process so I can spray them at the same time.

Has anyone priced out what it costs to nickel plate mech pieces? For example, what does a pop bumper Williams mech casing cost to do? Also, what does it cost to powder coat the smaller parts for TAF in black? Thanks. Those additional touches are inspiring. Thanks for all you do Chris.

This is going to probably vary based on your area and accessibility but here it cost about $500 to $750 to nickel plate a games worth of parts.
That’s not everything just the common things I have done.
Powder coating runs about the same. All those little pieces are tough for the coater to deal with because they each have to be grounded and it is hard to pick a good spot where it won’t show once assembled.

Cyclopes wiring is complete.
That like the rest of it was a challenge but it has been a great project overall.
Using dual lead sockets to house the resistors and orienting all those sockets for at least minimal clearance without bare braid is what really made it time consuming and at times frustrating. There were a lot of sockets there snd they run so tight with each other and the surrounding parts.

Knockout starts staging up more now
I am replacing the lower but reusing the original head.
The EM heads can be tricky so unless they are trashed I prefer to use the original in order to minimize hole location, glass fitment etc.

The head is gutted then stripped snd fiberglass’s in the seams and larger repairs.

Final Centaur run is soon to start.
This will be a two game run.
One will convert a Centaur 2 to a traditional Centaur the other will be another unique version that I will figure out as I go.

That begs the question: I know you've done several different "unique versions" over the years, and it seems like Centaur and 8BD are in the lead for the most different unique versions. Any idea which pin you've created the most unique versions of?? Obviously I'm talking seriously unique stuff like custom cabinet artwork and not just swapping up bumper caps.

Probably Centaur some more subtle than others but most at least have shaded lettering.
My goal when doing custom work is that it has to be something that looks factory like.
I avoid mural like art paint styles as well as photography like cabinet decals.
It needs to be something I can paint, stencil and shade to be in my wheelhouse and taste.
In my eyes it needs to look like something you would think was original if you didn’t already know it was not.
That can be tricky as hell.

TOM was picked up yesterday now Cyclopes takes its place.
I had some technical issues with the GI that were confusing me since this is my first Game Plan.
When the game came in there was a relay that was missing its cover and had a zip tie around it.
In the process of cabinet rebuild I removed the zip tie and found a cover thinking it was just like that because the cover had been lost or discarded.
When I powered it up the backbox GI would work but not the playfield.
After numerous checks I traced it back to the relay I put back to original.
I undid that and rigged it closed as it was before now it works. I am guessing it is bad and the zip tie bypassed it.
Then I had to set out to find the correct relay.
It is a socketed 14 pin 24VDC 3A.
Pretty obsolete it seems but I found a couple and await them.
None of this will keep me from finishing up the build now that the issue is identified.

Chris,

Have there been any projects you were really excited about doing or completing? I’m sure since this is a business most of the time it’s just work. I just wasn’t sure if there was one that was actually really special and you or you were really excited to do.

Sorry if it’s already been discussed.

I am excited to complete anything honestly.
Most of these are journeys that start way before the first picture is posted.
Games I enjoy doing the most are split fifty fifty.
I love doing games I know well because being well versed makes the process easier.
On the other hand there is something about doing a title for the first time that always intrigues and inspires me.
That being said out of the current projects in process.
I am looking most forward to the Knockout because it is a first and the custom Centaur because it’s mine to do what I want with.
Have no plans of keeping it I am not a collector but I look forward to doing something with no owner input or influence as a bit of a litmus test.

Cyclopes finished.

Absolutely phenomenal! And there’s some serious pin porn there! The lucky owner of that game has to be very pleased.

I love seeing the machines out of the mainstream being done. Looking forward to Knockout and Centaur as it sounds like these will be custom one-offs.

#8437 3 years ago

Wow! What a massive project! It looks awesome!

Do i understand correctly that Centaur is a game you are doing on spec? Can you tell us how you acquired it and the reasoning behind the diversification if so?

I am hoping the Sharpe family will see some of those pictures, I am sure Roger would appreciate such beautiful work.

Always so cool to see a rare pin get the HEP treatment. Also adding Cyclopes to the “horniest pins of all time” list.

Yes.
I spotted a decent deal on one and have a Centaur 2 here to convert to the traditional platform so I will use it to verify the changes needed to convert the Centaur 2.
I will build both at the same time one normal Centaur from a 2 platform and one custom off my donor.

Everybody has an opinion....that is a spectacularly and beautifully restored to exacting specifications ugly pinball machine. I love Radical and plenty hate it and that’s ok. What I sincerely appreciate is that Cyclops means something to someone to the point they would give it the HEP treatment. Congrats to the owner. I know you will enjoy it!!!

I am going to metal etch the rear door and prime it also so I can paint it with the cabinet later.

Building up the new Spirit cabinet.

I started to go a different route with this one being that it is #4 but all the trim as well as the door was in nice condition so I decided the really clean and polish that up instead of changing.
I”ll save that for something that really needs it.
