Final update on the HH.
The VUK mod was driving me mad.
It kept activating the lower playfield when it shouldn’t making the main playfield flippers shut off when they should be on.
Triple popping etc.
I am running updated pop boards so I could eliminate the ground path noise possibility. 611645AA-39F2-4FBC-A2EB-B2CADFCF6A97 (resized).jpeg611645AA-39F2-4FBC-A2EB-B2CADFCF6A97 (resized).jpeg

After wasting a whole day trying to isolate I eventually narrowed the lower playfield pop bumper as something related
This means when I disconnected it the issue goes away.
I first replaced the coil 963E9B78-535B-47B4-957A-367F3DDB6193 (resized).jpeg963E9B78-535B-47B4-957A-367F3DDB6193 (resized).jpeg
No luck.
Then I finally figured it out.
The pop switch was too sensitive!!!!7C6BA25F-6245-48B9-8810-CF90A6084F3B (resized).jpeg7C6BA25F-6245-48B9-8810-CF90A6084F3B (resized).jpeg
What was happening is when this fired to send the ball up It does so with enough force to set off the pop switch making the game think the ball is still in the cellar1E3812DF-2597-437C-BB05-F4ACDEF15DEB (resized).jpeg1E3812DF-2597-437C-BB05-F4ACDEF15DEB (resized).jpeg

These System 80s always burn up a bunch of extra time dialing in and troubleshooting but it is always the most simple thing in the long run.
They are like solid state EMs for lack of a better definition.
All good.

ohhh a couple more Em's..... i like it!

#8006 3 years ago

Ah, Liberty Bell. I worked on a liberty bell a few months back. Had quite a few issues. Had a few burned up coils due to gummed up mechanisms. Was able to get her up and running 100%. I was not a fan of the game play. A little boring even for an EM machine. The owner liked it because it went with his game room theme. Will be fun to watch it go through the HEP renovation process.

Quoted from High_End_Pins:

Yes it is. Mix of 2019 and 2020 bottles.

How much is a bottle of that in the US? We now pay huge prices in the netherlands due to the limit amounts of this. There is a complete protocol of calling the monastry with cell and license plate registration to get 2 crates per go on a certain date at a certain time. Next to that the monastry will only pick up the phone like 1 hour a day in the morning. The bottles itself at the source are going for around 3 euro but once in the wild you could pay up for 10-12 euro a bottle.

I buy most of my Belgian beers direct from a source in Belgium.
A lot of this stuff just isn’t available here.
These probably come in about $18 USD per bottle once all is said and done but access and convenience have a cost.
It’s kind of a hobby for me. Not so much the drinking although I enjoy that in moderation but the hunt and making the connections.

Time to shuffle the deck around here.
I can move stuff around solo again.
Not 100% pain free but tolerable.

With my foot in a little better spot I should be able to get back to the Cyclopes cabinet as well.

I was behind about 70 posts or so, and after catching up and getting another round of entertainment, I am reminded once again why this is the greatest thread of all time. You can’t make this stuff up.

Some highlights:

- goes running and somehow manages to bash the hell out of the ankle/foot, orders crutches from the internet, keeps working.

- someone notes he does more in a day than they would do in a month, he says it is from being experienced. But turns out has never seen or worked on that playfield before! Still rips it apart and reassembled it like it was nothing, even though it is such a complicated mess it would take me a year to figure out.

- a big debate about where to put a wire guide, and the answer was right there in the manual the whole time...like we used to say in tech support, RTFM.

- more cool beer.

- more wiring pr0n.

And

- references to Hollywood Shuffle, one of my favorite movies ever and a totally forgotten and underrated pic. It is hilarious.

Thank you for bringing happiness in these stupid mind-numbing Covid times.

The two games are currently taking up four spots so the best thing to do now is start gutting them. The cabinets and playfields are already done for the most part.

The game is unique in that you must paint half the floor black so it doesn’t show that bare wood look through the hologram window.
Also the speaker and transformer are offset. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
Probably not as important on this one though. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

CFTBL is going in black nickel trim.

It is a cool finish but it can be a bit inconsistent color wise.
That isn’t a dealbreaker but you have to be strategic with how you assemble and place the parts.
This batch of legs has two that are more on the brown side of the finish and two that are on the blue for example.

When it comes to plated leg bolts I find them problematic very often. They look greatimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
But the threads are usually overplatedimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
They are often only good for one use
On this game I am going to use plain black bolts image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

But by polishing them with metal polish they will take on that black nickel look

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
#8019 3 years ago

The leg is installed with one polished bolt at the bottom and one reg black up top for comparison.
The advantage is that I can provide several sets of leg bolts if needed and they will hold up to several uses without damaging the heads or threads.

I have a recommendation - a little Jergens for the closeup hand shots (at least the nails looked trimmed).

Have you ever considered Titanium Nitride coating? Its a bright shiny gold and super durable. Plus its so thin that it wouldn't matter if the threads got coated. Probably cost about $3.25 a bolt though. Not sure if thats high compared to plating or not. I do coatings like this at work if you're interested I could run some samples for you. I've been trying to figure out what some good pinball parts for coating would be, as most parts you'd want done (wireforms, armor, ect) probably wouldn't work do to just the restrictions of the process.

Thanks I haven’t put much thought into it because I never really know what someone is going request for their game but the community could use as many options as possible.

Nearly every one of the 6 on the playfield have burnt resistors in the R1 location.

Yeah. I got some resistor boards that look like that on this one too. I plan on redoing all of them.
The documentation on those boards and the snubbers is hard to figure out.
Seems like they use different versions in different spots or that there was just something random about what value cap or resistor is used where. Some have no caps or resistor at all.
I am going to copy what I see and can with new parts. 5F6C27F6-462D-47ED-A727-71F102EA1811 (resized).jpeg5F6C27F6-462D-47ED-A727-71F102EA1811 (resized).jpeg

Took a long time but all those snubbers and resistor boards are done. I rebuilt/reused the one snubber that is different than the others. I could have possibly depopulated some of the board to make it match the other(no resistor, cap only a relay and single diode)but I didn’t want to ruin a new board doing that.

Quoted from High_End_Pins:

All new targets game uses 20.

And the sad thing is, 12 of them you never shoot on purpose! Not hating on F-14, I used to own one and loved it, every game has dangerous shots you avoid.

That F-14 is going to look amazing!

Wiring this F-14 HEP style has proven to be quite time consuming.
Getting there. 2220E265-AFBA-4E0B-ADFB-4383250CE09B (resized).jpeg2220E265-AFBA-4E0B-ADFB-4383250CE09B (resized).jpeg

The targets and GI are all placed on plugs. Things run so tight that short protection is a must. Rebuilding the coils with the same protections because some run really close to the sides.

Medusa(Zipper flipper snd lamps with lots of rollover insert)

Fathom(Much like Medusa but no zipper flipper)

Spirit(any system 80 really but that is the only I have truly wired fully HEP style)
