This is about all that is left to do on the HH main playfield
I need to come up with one high current switch for the sling and one for the center kicking target. Someone rigged that. My PBR order should be here today so finishing the HH today is looking good.

Keeping the Guns n Roses launch day theme, that foot looks like Fat Axl. Ouch! Try to keep it elevated and iced as much as you can. Those gel wraps you can put in the freezer then velcro around affected body parts work great.

it will work spec wise. but the way that you would have to physically mount it to be stable, the venting portion would be facing down. i would wait for a proper terminal screw cap.

Could mount it sideways using a cable clamp to secure it and heat shrink any exposed leads.

Good idea.
I just want to install a new one prior to firing it up again.
I will source a more correct sized one for the long term.

Made good progress today on the HH.
Installed a new cord and filter, board set ,cleaned /polished the cabinet and placed the lower and main playfields back in the cabinet.

You need to replace that orange filter cap with one with a higher value. That cap is known to wreak havoc on all system 80 games. Often times people put 15,000uf 50v caps in but I've read/been told that that ends up shocking the filter caps in a serious manner and if those aren't in a good place, it will end poorly.

Clay's guides say that 10,000 uf is a sweet spot. I have this one in my HH and it hasn't caused my any problems and fits directly in the bracket already mounted to the board.

Shock wasn't the right word. I'm no EE and I don't want to derail this beautiful thread, but from my understanding that filter cap doesn't have enough capacitance to properly filter the voltages coming in from the 12v tap off the transformer. Value too high, and it puts stress on the 12vdc bridge rectifier. There's plenty written about it online from more capable people than myself

Good to know.
I have done a few Spirits and always replace those but it only has one. I get the version sold by GPE.
The Haunted House having two different ones left me unprepared.
Luckily I do have that suggested capacitor on hand image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
but it sounds like I could just as well use this one which I would prefer since I have the bracket for it also. Any thing wrong with that?10000uf @40v
So still higher rated than the factory version.

Getting close to finished with the HH
Another question.
This is the only HH I have torn down so I am at the mercy of either putting it back like it was or common sense.
This one has me a little baffled.
I have this strange wireform. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
On my game it went on the upper playfield right side and I see it there in one other picture I can find in a search of other games. 66E28CDD-A25A-4C46-BD1D-F700690296F1 (resized).jpeg66E28CDD-A25A-4C46-BD1D-F700690296F1 (resized).jpeg

So that would be this. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
Doesn’t seem quite right.
Which is correct?

#7976 3 years ago

I'd think this one.

The other spot has no reason to be there to deflect a ball, other than it fit when left over from a shop job.

I don't have my Haunted House anymore for reference but I'm with LTG on that one.

#7979 3 years ago

Nope. There should be a rubber stretching between two posts by the upper VUK. Without it, the ball will fall into the machine and behind the lower playfield (and will by Murphy's Law, land in-between two lugs on the transformer and short the whole game out and make a BIG spark).

Your first picture is right but it's installed backwards. It should mimic the shape of the plastic/post area. It works as an upper playfield deflector to prevent a ball hopping up there and getting stuck/breaking the plastic from the upper PF pop bumper

IMG_0834 (resized).JPGIMG_0834 (resized).JPGIMG_0836 (resized).JPGIMG_0836 (resized).JPG

To be honest, I'm not really sure a ball has ever actually hopped up there and broken a plastic, but that's where it's supposed to be.

Thanks. I suspected it didn’t belong there just based on the idea “Why would they not just use another wire guide installed in the playfield?“
Also remembered something similar on my Spirit projects upper playfields. D0176907-7407-4622-B5BB-257EA466C901 (resized).jpegD0176907-7407-4622-B5BB-257EA466C901 (resized).jpeg

Looks tighter to me in terms of space for the ball to get in there. Also, the bounce from the full length rubber could make it harder for the ball to get to the hole.

Color changing LEDs in the light up post.

I tried putting the "fire" LED in those posts from Comet and really didn't like the motion of it. Was hoping for a really subtle flicker but not so much. Might try putting a piece of diffusion over it to make it seem a little more realistic but who knows.

Those illuminated posts get REALLY hot with regular incandescents and I had to buy some long lamp sockets for them to accommodate frosted LEDs.

A week ago I had never even seen the inside of a Haunted House in person.
Since then I have learned a lot about the title.

There is always that extreme knowledge I have of pinball and restoration in general that will get me through any project but people that own and play these specific titles daily often are the best resource when it comes to dialing things in and getting it absolutely right when you aren’t familiar with the game.

That being the case I will backtrack a little today and do the Basement VUK /pop bumperboard mod.
That is something I knew nothing about last week that I also learned about. It should make the game more reliable for the owner and easier to support on my end.

I have to say HH and Black hole are a pain when you want to look at something quick especially if its under bottom playfield....it becomes a job when your in and out of one these machines a few times in a hour.
