Quoted from pinballinreno:

Now THATS how you buy hardware!

and people thought *I* was crazy when I did it a few times to offer up some hard to find black oxide hardware. truly, it's the only cost effective way. if you're not chris, it just takes some time to count out bags of 100 to sell

Quoted from High_End_Pins:

I like 26-1200 here. Not as strong as the 23-800 but stronger than the 27-1200.

Interesting. Still has enough power to kick 2+ balls up the runway?

Quoted from Gornkleschnitzer:

Yes. Same trough design as a game like TZ that actually holds 6 balls and runs the weaker 27-1200.
I think in those earlier days they took a pretty universal approach to coil strengths and started dialing them in for certain purposes as things evolved.
There could be minor variations from the board sets but I doubt that factors in much.

Almost forgot it is a new week with the holiday.
Last week sucked!Unexpected and expensive home repairs. Friday.

AC repairs are never fun...

#7807 3 years ago
Quoted from ToucanF16:

AC repairs are never fun...

Sure they are. My last 3 issues were capacitor, capacitor, control board. Cost about $50 total. Since I did all the repairs myself I figure the money saved = money for new pinball machine. New pinball machine = FUN!

The pic above looks a little more expensive though. Sorry Chris.

startup and running capacitors go out a lot. Easy to replace.

Control board may be a little more.

Just looked it up, was cheaper than I remember, $24.80 at Amazon. I'm sure it's only a matter of time until my luck runs out though.

It’s killing me trying to remember the name of that game in your pic. Had that when my son was little (probably still in the closet somewhere). It’s played like Comnect 4, right? I think they called the blue balls blueberries and the reds cherries (or maybe that’s just what my family called them).

How was the Austrian beer? How do you end up with that one-got it from some fan here or is it commonly available at your beer shop over there?

Yeah no simple cheap fix here unfortunately.
Some of that had to do with timing(how long can you stand to have no a/c)due to parts availability in the COVID era.The rest had to do with the previous system design and performance. There were hidden issues I never would have found that they uncovered in tear out so it worked out for the best in that regard.

When I was younger I would fix everything myself no matter what. It always felt like a win.
As I get older I get tired of fighting every little thing that pops up myself so I give in a bit more these days and just move on so I can focus on what I do best without the distractions or frustration.

It’s great.
I find it here locally in a few specialty shops usually collecting dust. No one knows what it is around here so it doesn’t sell. I even have a couple of 2012 and 2013 bottles Curtis found a couple of months ago.

Where did you get the red start button for ES or did you just paint it? Can't seem to find one.

Thanks

Some of the best games ever have an upper left flipper! You are in for a real treat when you get your hands on one

Now I can finish the Tron.
Sanded and polished the playfield.

Started the Cyclopes teardown.
First step is flattening the warped plastics out.
Using my step up box and a heat gun plus lots of care that was done.

Dunno about that. I only have 19 games here at present and 5 of them have a left upper flipper.

It’s another Monday here.
This week the thread turns two years old.
Not bad!

The Tron is well into rebuild. I am probably going to swap the mirror blades out for this version of art.
I will feel a little better about clearance issues and the long term ability to keep the game in the same condition it leaves in for the owner.

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
#7827 3 years ago

The Cyclopes playfield is now out of the cabinet.
That’s the easy part.
The documentation is the slow and more frustrating portion.
This is clearly a game that is built for a single use. That means that a full teardown isn’t easy nor practical by design.
I have methods to overcome that of course.

0ECB1092-B201-4DFA-B0F3-4942F670FD71 (resized).jpeg0ECB1092-B201-4DFA-B0F3-4942F670FD71 (resized).jpegEA5E5468-321F-46E4-B56E-9A14D991E4F8 (resized).jpegEA5E5468-321F-46E4-B56E-9A14D991E4F8 (resized).jpeg200AF672-164C-4831-97C9-0FAF924B3A30 (resized).jpeg200AF672-164C-4831-97C9-0FAF924B3A30 (resized).jpeg
#7828 3 years ago

The biggest challenge right now is getting everything off the playfield but doing so in a way that won’t do any harm, won’t leave a lot of work to clean up on the back end and most importantly can guide me in a common sense way during rebuild without having to comb through pictures every other minute.
I will do that through color coding.
After evaluating all colors and combinations within the playfield harness I gather every color needed. FB87A671-8893-4092-AFDB-2105D40FFEDC (resized).jpegFB87A671-8893-4092-AFDB-2105D40FFEDC (resized).jpeg

As a single example take the trough switch.
White/Red and Yellow/Gray.
4A628F11-51A9-426C-AD15-4F6456364803 (resized).jpeg4A628F11-51A9-426C-AD15-4F6456364803 (resized).jpeg
That switch is removed. Rubber keepers are used to secure the screws to the switch because I am not as well versed in how Game Plan uses their attachment hardware so this will eliminate any confusion. 08256D10-AC4D-448B-904E-D880BE5CD49D (resized).jpeg08256D10-AC4D-448B-904E-D880BE5CD49D (resized).jpeg2BB5EFD3-832C-4EC3-9EC6-5E360220DAA2 (resized).jpeg2BB5EFD3-832C-4EC3-9EC6-5E360220DAA2 (resized).jpeg
Now the color coding. This is done in a very detailed way so it won’t ever show after rebuild but will also last giving any future service the added advantage. This will take a while on the front end but save effort on the backend.

Have you thought of fine-tipped paint pens?

https://artistro.com/products/paint-pens-for-rock-painting-stone-ceramic-glass-wood-set-of-12-acrylic-paint-markers-extra-fine-tip

Easier to handle, apply and store. The link is for a set of 12, but they come in a wider variety, if needed.

Yeah. I have tons of those also and they work good for small jobs but usually dry out or get the tips destroyed during a big one like the Cyclopes.

Really enjoying seeing this one. Thanks for all of the pictures. Love the forced perspective of the artwork with the staircase.

Again, still really boggles my mind how often they use the word "eyes" plural for a game ostensibly about beasts with one eye.

#7835 3 years ago

The Cyclopes playfield is prepped for a primer style clearcoat application.
Much like primer it will be applied just to fill and seal grain, chips and other surface issues.
ACD19BE1-018A-4427-92B0-41B25CFA2A24 (resized).jpegACD19BE1-018A-4427-92B0-41B25CFA2A24 (resized).jpeg

This is a typical playfield of this era and vintage.
The biggest issue is insert wear. FFA65875-F879-459F-8C60-64EA41F44788 (resized).jpegFFA65875-F879-459F-8C60-64EA41F44788 (resized).jpeg9776D7E5-E50B-4A40-B3B9-8E1FDC948394 (resized).jpeg9776D7E5-E50B-4A40-B3B9-8E1FDC948394 (resized).jpeg
Ball swirl/planking is another. 3BC1A117-6C44-4C79-8C07-342511AC2380 (resized).jpeg3BC1A117-6C44-4C79-8C07-342511AC2380 (resized).jpegE528CA8C-DC0B-412F-A9CD-FF6CF61C5741 (resized).jpegE528CA8C-DC0B-412F-A9CD-FF6CF61C5741 (resized).jpeg64B2865D-692D-436C-B03D-5CC928DF6638 (resized).jpeg64B2865D-692D-436C-B03D-5CC928DF6638 (resized).jpeg
That is something I can improve but not completely eliminate entirely because it can’t be sanded out without doing more harm than good here is a low risk experiment area. E9033504-835D-4DD5-BE39-7829EF963B61 (resized).jpegE9033504-835D-4DD5-BE39-7829EF963B61 (resized).jpeg

A total repaint isn’t practical nor possible so the playfield will be painted in a strategic way that will make it look natural and address the most glaring issues.
The toughest challenges will be the cut outs and the color matches and really just figuring out where the sweet spots are to give it a nice facelift without overdoing it.

#7836 3 years ago

Cyclopes playfield gets the initial clear application.
This will do a good job of sealing up the low spots from the insert wear and setting the stage to thoroughly sand and level the playfield in order to start the repaints.

The original art registration to those arrow inserts is pretty awful. With the wear you can clearly see where the art SHOULD be, and that's not where it is...

It's times like these that you wish there was an art file for this playfield so CPR could just sand it to wood and digitally print a new one-off playfield.

Why would someone pay for the HEP experience and request radcals? I thought those were what you slapped on a cabinet you're too lazy to restore (I say this as a lazy person).

I had him put them on my IJ. The extra durability and reduced likelyhood of fade are
what swayed me.

Your IJ did turn out nice
It took two sets of Radcals and a set of decals to make it all work though
I think that is the frustration I see with these.
One side with a speck of dirt already in the glue or a ripple of loose adhesive backing and it’s trash right off the bat.
Too expensive and unpredictable to order numerous sets to try and have what you need to successfully do one cabinet.

FH lower is decaled. The edges are finished but not refinished yet. That will probably require a trip back up to the paint shop since I changed course from the Radcals.
Today is my 48th birthday so I doubt I will accomplish much but we”ll see it is still just a Tuesday
