Much better.

100 times better - just beautiful!
How does t-molding handle paint & clear? Can it bend a little without cracking? Anytime I've swapped t-molding there was a bit of flex & rubber mallet tapping involved.

Paint it after its installed on the game?

It handles it well as long as you paint it properly.
That means plastic prepping etching and using a flexible clear.
The smartest approach is to install after it dries overnight it will be dry enough to handle but flexible enough to absorb any bending.
All that work and money for a Tron. I just don’t see what others see in that game and I loved the original movie. But to each his own. As usual it looks amazing.
Quoted from transprtr4u:The blue trim is beautiful, the coin door with one slot would that be an aftermarket or re-import Coin door?
Thanks. The one slot door is common on these and a couple others can’t remember which since I don’t do as many newer sterns.
It is a US game.
One-slot coin door was Stern's misguided attempt to save money because they assumed (correctly) most Tron LEs weren't going on location and assumed (INcorrectly) collectors wouldn't care about the single slot. Collectors lost their shit. "It doesn't match!" "You gave us less than pro buyers!"
I know a hobby operator local to Stern who (understandably) carried his Tron LE coin door into the factory, plopped it on someone's desk, and wouldn't leave until they gave him a two-slot door. You need that redundancy in case one gets jammed.
Quoted from transprtr4u:The blue trim is beautiful, the coin door with one slot would that be an aftermarket or re-import Coin door?
All the Tron LEs shipped with that door, but it's usually an export door.
Not sure how this will go but I had some scratched up mirror blade from the Tron teardown.
I decided to try and repurpose them.
Prepped them
Metal etched
Silvered
Candied and cleared.

I think I like the blue/white blue chrome mix of parts.

Not to me. I like things that look the same on or off so I don’t use lighted flipper buttons often.
Parked between other games or with your fingers on them lighted buttons don’t do much for me personally.

I get that, but the reason I said it for this case was the illuminated TRON light cycle wheel is RIGHT THERE on the cab, so it's a bit of a special case. And lighting the button housing while keeping the center dark with a normal button to mimic the TRON cycle wheel is a configuration rarely (never?) seen.
New week.
I should wrap this Tron up this week.
Hopefully start closing out my ES project.
Been waiting on the boards for that. On the System 11s I usually just send everything out.
On the WPC and -95 stuff I already have sets of serviced spares so a little less down time on those.
The scrap mirror blades are installed. I will do my best not to scratch them but on the Stern games in particular where the playfield is not locked on a fixed track or pivot it gets even harder. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
The cabinet is wired. As much as it can be without the playfield. image (resized).jpg
I removed several homemade mod wiring sections and a couple unnecessary parts at this point.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
I am in the process of making new clean connections for what will remain.

Lighted flipper button boards, if I had to guess.

I'm assuming they were there to cool the coils.
This is probably heresy, but actually having looked at the right side of the cabinet, I think I might put the blue flipper button with orange trim on that side instead of white, to match the wheels of that lightcycle
Now that the Tron playfield has set a while I can figure out my next step on that. CEC5BCAB-7ACD-41A1-89F3-0B0B4F2A5167 (resized).jpeg
I see a little clear settlement in a couple high wear areas.
That being two ball drops and the scoop hole 786F785E-4897-4270-ADC5-6966D14A80F7 (resized).jpeg4CF6F209-53ED-41AB-AE8C-A5E5175247E8 (resized).jpeg
They way the clear settles in spots like that can be tough to predict even if it isn’t really worn. The wood fibers crack and absorb the clear. When originally applied it looks smooth a few days later it is wicked in and more pronounced.
Once sanded smooth it can be frosted in wood tone to eliminate the minor ground in dirt. There is a small spot in the shooter lane also. 086A2443-D4D3-4258-9E55-708BFF6EC104 (resized).jpeg
Tron playfield is prepped then masked as needed and frosted. Doing other cut outs in the areas insured that they look uniform.

Not sure what the clearance looks like between the playfield and the mirror blades on Tron, but I've added a strip of the self adhesive felt from pinballrestore down the length of the playfield in the past with some success. I think this microfiber felt might be even better.

I've put just small lines of around the edge of the PF before. It helps keep the PF centered, avoids scratches, and just small pieces avoids creating too much friction.
From another thread:
Quoted from Kkoss24:It would make things easier if pinball eventually gets a “reality” show .Gator hunters ,crab fisherman , pickers ,hoarders, mediums ,bunch of women who married $ sitting around complaining about shit ....Why not a pinball show?

I absolutely swear by these:

I use mine all the time. People who stop by when I am working on a game always ask where I got them.

Thanks! I'll have to order a set.
I also got a set from Pinbal Universe in Germany, great, use it all the time, on games with blades but also newer Sterns with artblades. Used to work with homemade ones but these are durable and easy to use.

I never lift a playfield without them.
My art blades and mirrors are like new, always.
I have a couple sets. One at home and one in my shop.
They store inside a game!
You just have to work them in a bit through a coindoor at first but get good at that pretty fast.
Quoted from Jvspin:Apologies Chris for derailing your thread. Back to the regularly scheduled programming.
No problem. More input is better than less sometimes.
I do have some of those here.
I had forgotten about them stuck to the side of my big cabinet.
Taking the ES a bit further now.
I am not trying to make too many changes but the apron had some trouble spots.
I decided to paint that the same color as the cabinet.
It eliminates the fine letters because they were in need of work and too small to stencil or mask but the overall is the same. I eliminated the lettering on both sides for a balanced look.
Painted the rails and backboard to match as well.

Quoted from fossmin:Looking for a source for the Williams apron decal for ES. The only ones I can find have the instructions to use the flippers to change lanes, which ES obviously does not have.
Thanks
Can’t help you there unfortunately.
The apron situation in this hobby sucks.
There are not good reliable sources for the art, decals or aprons themselves.
It is a really neglected aspect.
Often I make artistic choices or compromises to overcome it but it is really just due to the fact that there just aren’t good offerings out there.
Spent some time today polishing playfields
F-14
This one fought me pretty hard. All those inserts!
Now the ES can start final assembly.

Quoted from flynnibus:black wood screws holding the guides?
Yes. Not unsusual on System 7-11.
I have a case of them.
Have plenty of zinc also but no need to waste them in hidden areas.

Now THATS how you buy hardware!
Quoted from pinballinreno:Now THATS how you buy hardware!
Yes.
I get a lot of request for blacked out games.
Hunting black hardware or making it got time consuming and tedious so I just sourced everything I needed.
Like most specialty things it requires you buy in bulk.
This is what roughly $1200 worth of screws and washers looks like.
ES playfield is ready to flip and wire.
On the System 11 games they use AE-23-800 Coils for almost everything
The slings,the bumpers,even the outhole
I like to change these out to coil values more commonly used on the WPC games for a little less wear and tear.
Not everything but some of the more practical ones like the outhole.
ES uses 23-800. WPCs are usually 27-1200
I like 26-1200 here. Not as strong as the 23-800 but stronger than the 27-1200.
