Then the trim.
This is a candy blue powder coat over chrome.
It is chipped in a couple spots.
Splotchy and runny in some areas. Perhaps some fish eyes or other contaminants. 292088F3-43B1-402A-8505-85A3BE84B833 (resized).jpeg292088F3-43B1-402A-8505-85A3BE84B833 (resized).jpegDC60183A-7C9D-4A1C-B9C1-FBDA84455AC8 (resized).jpegDC60183A-7C9D-4A1C-B9C1-FBDA84455AC8 (resized).jpeg8B129396-AD25-408B-85F6-B2C5E1C456B3 (resized).jpeg8B129396-AD25-408B-85F6-B2C5E1C456B3 (resized).jpeg

I will see what I can do with that. Thought about ordering more but I don’t want to waste money or wait a long time only to end up with the same thing anyway.

As I sand it you can better see the issues. 704ED696-0294-432F-B976-E545F4B46854 (resized).jpeg704ED696-0294-432F-B976-E545F4B46854 (resized).jpegF6BECBB1-2D53-466C-9192-060ACDC4E7F2 (resized).jpegF6BECBB1-2D53-466C-9192-060ACDC4E7F2 (resized).jpeg

Sanded all that. 92519DCD-A641-4DD3-83D3-1002711F8B25 (resized).jpeg92519DCD-A641-4DD3-83D3-1002711F8B25 (resized).jpeg

Since this is a candy finish it is done by effect. Transparency of the blue allows the chrome underneath to come through.
Cool!
The problem is that where it is chipped I have to feather it out leaving less to no blue in the area. CAA39973-3AB5-4F7B-BB98-F8A3A3CDD669 (resized).jpegCAA39973-3AB5-4F7B-BB98-F8A3A3CDD669 (resized).jpeg

I am able to replace that through re-candying those areas.
Looks good 68CACE01-CDB3-4319-80CD-4911DFB7118A (resized).jpeg68CACE01-CDB3-4319-80CD-4911DFB7118A (resized).jpegBA4EE94B-CACB-4333-B7C1-1D16EC65AF3F (resized).jpegBA4EE94B-CACB-4333-B7C1-1D16EC65AF3F (resized).jpeg
But it doesn’t fix the splotchiness or Uneven application.
The only way to do that and even it all out is to better spray it all with a light coat of candy.
Doing that will darken it some because each coat covers that chrome a little more but with the color pallet of the game I think it can work fine.
All that stuff is sprayed lightly but evenly. You can see how transparent it is by looking at the surrounding areas.

Now everything is ready to clear from the cabinet to the trim to the playfield.

Everything is cleared in full gloss.
I know that is good for the playfield and trim.
It may or may not be the final for the cabinet.
Just depends on how the clear settles overnight on that surface.
If it picks up too much of the grain then it will probably be best to sand it once more and give it a dialed up matte clear like 80 gloss 20 matte just to knock the edge off of it between the resandiing and the slightly duller finish but we will see

Quoted from yancy:

Stern changed the cabinet art process entirely between Tron runs. They went from cabinets that arrived at the factory already direct-printed, to decals applied at the factory. Transformers was next, the first all-decal Stern game. Many of those wrinkled badly at the legs, hence the introduction of metal (and then cheaper plastic) cabinet protectors to keep legs from digging in. But I digress.

I remember that.
The Stern cabinet decals especially early on were horrible. They were about as sticky as a postage stamp and if you look back on here at the time there were numerous complaints.
Some would just start falling off cabinets
I would rather have the more durable, permanent ,pixelated cabinet than the fragile decals.
If a better decal specific company made Stern cabinet art like Phoenix Arcades or Mr Pinball AU I would gladly go that route but given the current alternatives I am happy to refresh this cabinet with this method.

Paint suit, fresh filtered high rate air exchange and a 3M 07178 dual cartridge respirator.
You need a new one every week.

Much safer and better for your body! Although I do miss the rainbow colored boogars from back in the day!

Tron cabinet has cured overnight.
I can better see how the clear I applied settled into the factory finish.
It is grainy looking which I pretty much expected since I was clearing a grainy surface to start with.
This does give me a little room to sand it a bit smoother now.
Still can’t go crazy trying to get it slick or else it will definitely break through into the art.

Now it is cleaned and ready to clear once more. It will be a 70 gloss 30 matte ratio because the glossier it is the more pronounced that grain will be and while I could sand and clear numerous times to eliminate that it isn’t the best use of time or resources and each additional session opens the door for complications.

Another thing I need to deal with is the lockbar and coin door.
I was hoping it would be close enough for the door and completely forgot the lockbar yesterday.
It really is very close but not 100%

Those parts are prepped.
I also plastic etched the coin door parts and sprayed them silver so I can candy those as well as the T molding which was also plastic etched.

All those parts are candied and secured on a clean surface to clear. I also did the emblem that was on the door and the shooter housing.
Emblem is more of a curiosity to me I want to clean up the look of a few details.

Cabinet and parts are cleared.
Clear for the cabinet is in the right trim is on the left.
The cabinet is slicker than it was and will be even more so once it dries and glosses down a little.

Mixed the NGG playfield in there as well try to keep material waste to a minimum.

That is some seriously impressive HEP magic on the Tron cabinet!

Chris, Kind of an "off the wall question" but how much trash do you generate each week. Between all the masking taping and painting plus everything else I would think you must create a good bit of garbage each week. I know back in my car repair days it was pretty crazy how much trash we would generate from week to week. Watching layer after layer of paint & clear being applied I hate to see your paper & tape bill each month!

In between the trashed cabinets, stencils, paper and tape it can be a good bit but it isn’t a daily event more of a monthly one.
One of the best parts of my warehouse is the dumpster and recycling that is included.

Chris, I envisioned a line of trash cans at the end of your driveway each week. Glad to hear dumpster saves your trash guys a little work. At least the stuff you are throwing away is just light & bulky for the most part anyway. Keep up the great work and keep those pictures coming.

Now placed. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
I installed skids on the back very little impact on the text in the back. Definitely worth the trade off.

The three stage finishes are hard enough on an assembled object but when the parts are scattered all over the paint booth it gets really complicated.
The air flows differently area to area. The shapes take the finish at different rates and the spray patterns change from one part to the other.
This is where having an eye and a feel are so important because once the parts butt together they need to match up.
Hard to describe but hopefully it all gels together properly.

Would it not have been better to do powder coating? This seems like a ton of work for you.

#7738 3 years ago

Seems like powder is rarely up to HEP standards, and he bascially treats it as primer. Makes sense when you compare the average powdercoat to a high-end custom automotive finish, which is pretty much what Chris does. Apologies if I put inaccurate words in his mouth.

Quoted from GCS2000:

It was already powder coated to start with and that helps but powder coating is a limited finish in a lot of ways. You can’t powder coat plastic parts. You can’t control much of the outcome of them after it hits the oven. It almost always has trash or dry spray areas that I can’t accept.

For me it is better to handle any single thing I can here in house.

I don’t have the down time and disappointments that way. If I don’t like something I just keep working on it until I do and while that can seem like a set back at times in the end it feels better to address the way I personally feel about something I’ve done than it would just to hope no one else will notice or care.

Thanks for the explanation.

Next up on the Tron is one more thing that was bothering me.
The Flynn’s arcade button filler.
Looks cool but a round filler in a square hole and it is a bit too recessed.
I popped that off. 232EA2BD-1F69-4597-9D95-D5B0FFA5B693 (resized).jpeg232EA2BD-1F69-4597-9D95-D5B0FFA5B693 (resized).jpeg

Cut the rod off an older spinner. 42E42E31-3184-4A3F-80C4-21F4574FB6CB (resized).jpeg42E42E31-3184-4A3F-80C4-21F4574FB6CB (resized).jpeg
Candied that and reattached the coin. 70780ED8-C896-448D-96A4-9FD108D650D2 (resized).jpeg70780ED8-C896-448D-96A4-9FD108D650D2 (resized).jpeg
Then shimmed it out. C3C2180B-1259-4253-92CE-5E1B18EA47D6 (resized).jpegC3C2180B-1259-4253-92CE-5E1B18EA47D6 (resized).jpeg
I also shimmed the start button out a little
White seemed like a better choice than green. I tried the obvious blue but it was too light.

Placed the t molding on and I could not be happier with the color now. Worth the extra effort.

The juice was worth the squeeze on the trim.

Oh man, barrel aged peanut butter stout? I'm jelly.

The HEP beer cellar is pretty stocked. Waiting on a shipment of meads from CA and a crate of Westvleteren 12 from Belgium. Transit times are painful these days.
