I should never open one of your threads when I'm about to go up to my own "finish room" and "do some painting" with my rattle cans. *sigh*

We do the best with what we've got.

I'm sure your work is to be admired too !

And you are helping save games for the future.

Thanks, Lloyd, but thankfully I'm not rattle canning games. I'd never do that to a pinball machine, anyway, just arcade games. All pins deserve to go to Chris or be left with their patina until they can go to Chris.

i often feel like chris will end with all of the old beat up pinball machines with all the crazy hacks, he is doing an amazing job plowing through them

New week.
The IJ KE is just about finished.

Quoted from High_End_Pins:

Wood tones unmasked.
I will probably catch a couple more colors but will wait to do the areas around the inserts until I know those are fully sealed and level. Not there yet but much closer.[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

Out of curiosity, wouldn't it be easier to cut a new playfield for one as simple as this one, rather than paint woodtone paint (not a lot of holes, basic artwork)? Seems like you could use the old playfield as a template to drill through for new holes. I'm sure it's a lot harder than it seems but I've always wondered this about older basic playfields.

#7508 64 days ago

The IJ KE is all done.
I have many IJs already posted in the thread so just some quick inside pictures is about all I can justify on this one.

Thanks for always posting the finished pics. I’m sure the customer enjoys it (I sure do!)

I enjoy every picture Chris posts. There is an entire visual journey on every machine. That's what makes this the best thread on Pinside and the first thread I check every time I login! The final result pics are like the grand finale at a fireworks show.

Me too! I love watching my own games go through the magical transformation. But I also learn so much more watching everyone else’s games being restored

My first experience with this should be coming up very soon! Hopefully it is enjoyed by all as it is a title that we have never seen Chris do before.

IJ KE moves out. Nice local transaction!
Tron moves in others upcoming.

#7517 63 days ago

TRON!!! This will be fun....does the owner want an original or modded version???? Can't wait to see how that turns out!

Quoted from AUKraut:

This will be a pretty straightforward job.
The game is very nice already.
Main things that will be done will be Teardown and clearcoat the playfield which has almost no shine or protective coating and address issues with the trim and t molding.
A little cabinet touch up as well although depending on timing and budget I could see clearing that entirely since it is the last Stern without decals.

I know what title you're talking about And with a cabinet color that should have been used at the factory!! It's gonna be awesome, can't wait to see the magic happening. We'll all be jealous for sure.

Wow, the low-res half toning on the cabinet artwork looks terrible! What were they thinking?

Quoted from radial_head:

They were thinking "please don't lock the doors, please don't lock the doors." Low-res screened cabinets are a holdover from the mid 2000s when Stern was on the brink of bankruptcy. Tron is one of the big titles that turned things around. Later runs had much nicer decaled art.

Great thing about this thread is HEP quality! So you know where to get the best parts for your pins and some great tips on wiring, sanding, painting ect ect ect!!
Quick question I know it in here somewhere but, how do you prep for the t nuts on the pf again. I remember you had a good trick/tip for doing those?

You have been doing a lot of those double-ups like the 2 IJs above, I’m imagining that this gives you a bit of throughput improvement as you work on them side by side. So you can get two out more quickly compared to having them done one at a time between other machines. A sort of assembly line concept for efficiency improvement.

Was curious if that could be scaled up higher. For those popular ones like TAF it seems you would easily have enough in line to do 3 or 4 at a time, or even more, this getting them out more quickly with no compromise in quality. Or, maybe that’s not practical due to space limitations or other reasons.

Bottom line is, the faster you can get them out, the more $$ you make. And you deserve every bit of those $$.

Cannot wait to see Tron!

Thanks
Three is usually as much as I can do at a time just due to space limits.
It definitely makes it easier on some fronts. Most of those are just convenience based though because at the end of the day it’s still just me and I can only do one thing at a time.
Those conveniences sound really simple but it is very efficient.
Minor things like only having to pull my IJ bin once its got all my extra oddball IJ parts that I might need of I run into something out of the ordinary. image (resized).jpg
image (resized).jpg

Or just pulling my IJ file once and being able to leave it out until they are all done. It will have all my IJ documentation and can clutter up the counter. . image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

That drawer is priceless.

It really is.
I’d take those old paper files and printed pictures over any other documentation available to this day.
Something really nice about just having the picture right in your hand As your building compared to pulling it up on your phone or the computer.

Details day.
I painted the IJ MB apron in a way to match the ruins.
It just gives the spirit of that not identical in a pattern that is something I could weed and place.
The real artsy part f it was making it look distressed.
Realistically very little of it will show once decaled and assembled but it should work well with the stained playfield rails and custom ruins.

Then the ES coin door. Painted that in the factory scheme.
My plan for the ES is just a really nice factory build. No tricks, gimmicks chrome nor powder just trying to make a great representation of the title.

Went with factory correct System 11 legs for this one.
Red start button seemed to be the best choice along with the two tone flipper buttons.
