I've heard that you bring screwdrivers with you to people's homes and randomly turn the screw heads to make them point in all different directions as well
so, just stay over there on the west coast buddy!
Personally, I really appreciate it. If you were to visit my house you would notice that on every single light switch and outlet that all screws are oriented vertically. I really didn't know there was any other way to do it.
My wife just painted a couple rooms. I notice in the first one she did the screws are now all in various angles. In the one she just finished they're now all horizontal. Makes you wonder at what point did she start thinking "I should make these all horizontal".

This is how we do it in Australia, look ma', no screws.

Are you changing out the paper insert so it says the original 25 cents/push to reject instead of the suzo happ inserts?

Strategically used some sling shot washers and everything fits and functions nicely plus I have faith in them holding up.

What are you doing with that old door and frame? Selling it?
The woodrail is absolutely gorgeous, and I didn't think I would say that about a pin of that era. But the question is on everyone's minds........What will be the HEP Memorial Day weekend food of choice???? Will it be salmon, lobster, chicken, steaks? and the fixin's, and the beer????? I guess we'll have to wait for the official word. Happy Memorial Day everyone, stay safe.
Maybe because it is different than what you usually do, maybe it is the history, the art/beauty or just watching how an expert navigates a learning curve, I have really enjoyed watching the wood rail unfold into the beauty it really is. I know you don't post game play videos but you do test them so it would be great to see this one in action if possible when done. (and maybe some time in the future do another one, or pre-war even). Thanks for bringing us along for the ride!

Great job as always Chris! I think the wood grain tool worked out great as it gives a large area, that would otherwise be one solid color, some contrast. Looking forward to the pics when the machine is taken to the "outdoor studio".

Well if LEDs are going in there, the LEDs will have a shorter bulb height than the original #44/#47 bulb height so it should even out properly.

Yeah, this is the first time I've been jonesing for a HEP gameplay video. I've played nice examples of most of the other stuff.
I'd suggest trying oil board stencil material for painting EM cabinets. Using a rigid stencil is how they were originally done and will give the authentic soft edge look. No technology required you can still hand-cut the stencil!

Seems counterintuitive but I find that frosted warm LED's reproduce the incandescent glow better than a clear/retro LED. The clear LED itself looks more original, but I'm not a fan of the light throw. There's definitely no perfect substitute.

I agree with this. I only use frosted after testing everything out there.
Normal bulbs would be fine but LEDs were requested.
They want little to no maintenance.
Even just changing a bulb can be a pain on these.
There are only for bulbs that actually show Now that it is assembled but even they are under the plastics.

When I placed it yesterday I realized it just lacked a certain look everything else now has and it was a bit out of place looking.
I chemical cleaned it and used a razor blade to remove some really stubborn splashes of cola I believe CFAA2358-BBA5-46BF-8652-72DB28A0B908 (resized).jpeg
Did some minor touch ups and matte cleared it. After it dries it should at least look similar in sheen to the playfield and trim as well as just a bit smoother looking/less brushed and lumpy compared to what it was originally.

I have a weird translite question. I have a TOM original translite that is in great shape but it has an odd problem that drives me nuts. The translite warps with the slightest change in temperature. I've put LEDs in to reduce heat figuring that may help....I have 8 other pins in the same room and none of the others do this. So I keep taking the thing out removing the plastic channel guides, smooth it out again, put the guides back and it helps temporarily but keeps re-occuring. I know this is a silly problem but was wondering if you had any suggestions that would help.

Not wanting to do anything permanent.
I stenciled some vinyl and aged it to make it look in place on the apron.
Just something to fill in the blank there for now.

I don't know if you can layer vinyl to make drop shadows, but maybe the logo from the backglass for continuity?

That looks really nice too.
I thought about trying to match the backglass lettering but after studying the apron a bit I like the more simple lettering for that because it was more like what was on that apron and the playfield but I only had a few fonts to pick from.
I think originally there is some type writer like printed card that gets stapled on there so this was something in between what is original and what you had in mind.

AH! So a pricing/replay card went there. Using Helvitica font it's pretty much a direct match, but the only picture I could find of a real SELECT-A-CARD one was so low-res I can't read some of the conditions on the right.
I guessed at the dimensions.

A lot of what I know or do comes naturally to me. It is really hard to teach. It is almost like a sense or feeling. Not saying that to sound like a puke but just honestly it has never been something I could explain I wish I could teach it because I would have more help and be more productive but it just isn’t like that for some reason.
Often I don’t even have a particular plan when I go into these I just get started and keep going with those senses and feelings until the game looks like what I have in mind or as close as I can come with my skill set and resources.
No plating on the coin mech. I polished it by hand.
The reason I did not have it plated was because I think that plating will make it inoperable because there are some very small grooves that interlock and it would likely thicken and ruin them making the slide action either not work or flake after a few uses.
Bravo. I've seen every post on this thread and you do unparalleled work, but this is your masterpiece.

Powdercoating is almost like a primerSo the powder coating company is obvious someone you use a lot. When you get work back like that from them, do you tell them your not paying for it? Do they give you a credit since you had to repaint them yourself?
I would like to know as well. If the customer is ultimately paying for the powdercoating process, that what he should recieve.

Chris, Most people don't understand this from my experience. Like you I am a "hands on guy" and a "Jack of all trades" and have basically been that way my entire life. My dad was a mechanic & my grandfather was a farmer so I grew up working with tools from the time I started walking and was always trying to learn all I could from people who worked with their hands.
I have two fantastic kids - both boys - and neither of them has a clue how to do anything mechanical. Over the years I tried to teach them as much as possible and they have both learned some basic skills. But neither has the GOD given mechanical ability I seem to have been born with. It is really hard to explain but you either "get it" or you don't. You can go to school to become a body man, mechanic, carpenter, etc but even 95% of people what have done that just don't have the "natural skills" some of us were born with.
There is basically nothing I can't fix or build and I am happy for that but I wish I had 10% of the artistic talent you have. I think the thing that impresses me the most about you is you "have it all" - not only are you a natural when it comes to that artistic ability you also have a great sense of mechanical stuff. Plus you know how to work within your limits. Having all of that makes you one in a million. Keep up the great work!
Okay, tracked down an actual higher-res SELECT-A-CARD instruction card and re-made it. These old cards crack me up. They're definitely hand-made and spaced. Extra spaces for no reason. Abbreviations where they weren't needed. Some sentences end in periods, others don't. 1 REPLAY has parenthesis, but 10 REPLAY doesn't - it gets a period instead. The best one on this card is MILLION is misspelled "MILLON" - I couldn't figure out why I couldn't get it to line up with the original art until I realized that it was missing an "I". I left all the weirdness and the spelling error in. It's exactly like the original card.
I assume that different card part numbers had different rules since this one is quite different than the other one I couldn't fully make out. But this one looks more like an instruction card, and all the information is correct with no guessing on my part due to low resolution, so it's definitely the better of the two. Still not sure on the sizing, so if you want to use it, let me know the dimensions of the area inside the red/black box outline on the apron and I'll size it properly without the black border.
