Quoted from littlecammi:

Mulch isn't done yet. Chris still has to mask the sidewalks and then add two layers of clear over it.

Hilarious!Really enjoyed that
Curtis is debating which is more exciting right now the Twinkies or the beer collection.

Has he ever had a Chocodile?

Basically a chocolate covered Twinkie. Good to know they're still available.

New week.
I am going to state the things I hope to accomplish this week.
This is something I always do internally but I don’t think I ever put in thread.
The reason is because regardless of what I could do if everything goes perfectly,I don’t have any interruptions or I don’t get sidetracked I almost never have a week where those things don’t happen.
What I would like to do this week is this.
Gut my TAFs
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
Get the final clear down on the HS cabinet.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
Do what I hope will be the final repaints and maybe even the final clear on the woodrail.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
Put the finishing touches on the Black Knightimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

One a scale of 1-10 one being the easiest /closest and ten being the hardest farthest away at this point I would rank them as follows
TAFs 6
HS cab(only cab right now not whole project) 3
Woodrail 9
BK 4

Getting through these will free up room and racks for the next projects.
The woodrail is claiming a lot of real estate on the racks.

Monday is in the books.
How did I do?
Black Knight is just about there. 9023EBB5-28AD-46A1-9CFA-6D2D48FFBDA1 (resized).jpeg9023EBB5-28AD-46A1-9CFA-6D2D48FFBDA1 (resized).jpeg

The High Speed cabinet took a little more work than I had planned for.
CC44FF60-16F2-4191-B1F5-91D5C40B66FE (resized).jpegCC44FF60-16F2-4191-B1F5-91D5C40B66FE (resized).jpeg
It was sanded slick and any imperfections noted with masking tape. A9BD5202-5071-4110-8C72-C597159508D6 (resized).jpegA9BD5202-5071-4110-8C72-C597159508D6 (resized).jpeg
What are my concerns now.
Exclusively some markings in the yellow. They can’t be seen unless you really study it inches away.
This is likely a slight smear in the red to the yellow from wiping with a tack rag 0F2AD0F9-588D-4A70-9CEC-6C1F45A11D63 (resized).jpeg0F2AD0F9-588D-4A70-9CEC-6C1F45A11D63 (resized).jpeg
This is probably some glue that stayed behind undetected during the stenciling process. A51C6110-5AA3-4E0B-92D6-DFC004EE3EFA (resized).jpegA51C6110-5AA3-4E0B-92D6-DFC004EE3EFA (resized).jpeg
What does that mean for me?
I need to mask and repaint the yellow stripe if I want a better job.
I don’t have to it is fine no one is going to notice but I know it is there and it will bother me.
I also cut the bevel in the lower so it can be now sealed in the final clear. BA2EC3D7-BD04-4680-9890-9D35EB0DEAAF (resized).jpegBA2EC3D7-BD04-4680-9890-9D35EB0DEAAF (resized).jpeg
Then the yellow stripe was masked on the lower and sprayed. I wanted to close the gaps on the start button area cut out as well.

HS Now unmasked and ready for the final clear.
Clean paper on the stand and cabinet is a must at this point. The clear I will use is not polishable.
421DA7B0-76D1-4772-A39F-3CCE600B0667 (resized).jpeg421DA7B0-76D1-4772-A39F-3CCE600B0667 (resized).jpegCF9CFE3B-B1C0-483E-800E-246A083BF846 (resized).jpegCF9CFE3B-B1C0-483E-800E-246A083BF846 (resized).jpeg

Final clear is applied. The gloss is dialed up a little but not too much.
It is a 70 gloss 30 matte ratio compared to my normal preference of 60/40.
This should yield a nice gloss like finish without being too glossy. There is is just something about a full gloss cabinet I personally don’t like and never seem to be able to talk myself into although it would be much easier.

Lovin’ the HS cabinet and special touches!

#6809 3 years ago

You really poured a ton of work into that HS! My cabinet is all prepped and ready for paint. with the color stacking and stencil edge issues looks like I have my work cut out for me.

I can see where the stacking was a problem on the lower cabinet since the red is laid on top of the Yellow. Would be nice if the yellow could be laid on top of a solid red eliminating the edges as it is on the head stencil sequence. Makes for an extra paint step with yellow first on the cabinet and red first on the head. Need to do a little planning on this paint job.

I really like what you did with the white on the head and continued the stripes around the front of the cabinet.

HS cabinet has dried overnight and is now ready to move out of the paint shop.
Gloss level is exactly what I was hoping for. More towards the gloss side but with a slickness and sheen that doesn’t look too thick.

To make room for the HS cabinet the BK is moved into a room I can put the finishing touches on it in
The TAFs are at a point right now where they are taking up the footprint of four games so it requires some space management at times.

Gloss black powder is just a solid base to work off of sometimes.
The wireforms etc all look great but the rails and lockbars often have to be sanded painted and cleared to be on par with the cabinet paint work.

So wait, you send trim out for powder coated. When it comes back you sand, paint and clear?

#6819 3 years ago

Wow! I kept finding this thread in searches and it's neat that you keep it updated with happenings.

I'm about to refinish my Addams Family cabinet, what kind of paint would you recommend?

#6820 3 years ago

I hope the woodrail owner appreciates all the work going into that cabinet! I actually thought it looked period perfect after your cleaning, more than acceptable level of patina. But the customer is always right.

#6821 3 years ago

So the powder coating company is obvious someone you use a lot. When you get work back like that from them, do you tell them your not paying for it? Do they give you a credit since you had to repaint them yourself?

#6822 3 years ago

the paint job on that wood rail is looking great chris

Quoted from fossmin:

I have low expectations for the finished appearance of Powdercoating so it isn’t a concern.
If on the rare occasion I get parts back that I can install without touching them that is great but if not I am prepared and willing to get them to a level I want.
Powdercoating is almost like a primer to me really.

Let’s hope so. I didn’t want to get involved in it at all because I already know stuff like this is an even bigger can of worms than the normal projects.
As it has progressed it has reminded me all to well why I said no for a year

#6825 3 years ago

It may be a bigger can of worms, but in the end you'll have something to show for it that's even more amazing than your "normal" work.

I can understand not wanting to do this often, but as a "once in a while thing", it is pretty cool.

So, how do you normally ship these when you are done (carrier/insurance/etc)?

I would think that the danger of having your hard work be destroyed in shipping would be significant. Have any horror stories to tell?

I cringe to think of that chrome Fathom being destroyed by some fork lift somewhere.

#6826 3 years ago

Such great work!! I love paint and seeing some of the cool work people can do with paint! I hope to one day restore one at a time and just for fun to keep them alive. Wish I could do it with cars but I think the wife would not like that idea!

Those are just normal skid marks from sliding the playfield in and out. It’s not the paint rubbing off

Glad Maverick finally showed up (after nearly 4 weeks absence) in your post of about 4 days ago.
Wondering if he may be getting a bit more shaggy lately,
since I assume the dog groomers are on lockdown for past several weeks.
Also wondering if you are getting shaggy, or do you have clippers to give yourself a homemade trim.

Maverick finally got to go back to the groomers after almost two months.
He was relieved.

the BK looks beautiful but I was surprised to the see back of the backbox lacking the warning screening. was this something that the owner requested?

#6836 3 years ago

The subtle changes you make to most machines is the best. For instance the black acorn nuts on the playfield plastics. The are simple enhancements, but I think these little things really put your restores over the top. Great work!

No screening on the backbox is correct on these.
They didn’t start doing that until the System 11 era.
It does leave a lot of empty real estate back there though.
Sometimes I fill that in with something creative other times whatever is original is fine.

Thank you.
I always try to make each one a little different usually in subtle ways sometimes in bigger ones.

Frickin BEAUTIFUL BK Chris!

Quoted from mbeardsley:

It may be a bigger can of worms, but in the end you'll have something to show for it that's even more amazing than your "normal" work.
I can understand not wanting to do this often, but as a "once in a while thing", it is pretty cool.
So, how do you normally ship these when you are done (carrier/insurance/etc)?
I would think that the danger of having your hard work be destroyed in shipping would be significant. Have any horror stories to tell?
I cringe to think of that chrome Fathom being destroyed by some fork lift somewhere.

I usually ship these STI on a custom built oversized pallet fully blanketed.
Full insurance is used usually $10 to 15k
I have a couple horror stories after almost 20 years of shipping pins but STI has been the best fit for me and the most accountable.
The worst is when I used to fully crate the games.
Using Bax Global they decided the crate fit in their truck better on its side somewhere between here and CA even though it was obviously built to only set upright.
Game arrived in fairly good order considering but not perfect.
Filed a claim had it returned.
Fought tooth and nail to get a settlement ,redid the cabinet entirely and sent the game back to the owner and ONCE AGAIN THESE F&?:S! @ Bax Global decided to turn the crate on its side again.
I was stunned. After filing yet another claim and fighting tooth and nail once more I got a settlement and was told that in the future my shipments would only be insured for $500 and that I should be labeling my crates better.

Perhaps that was the last time you used BAX?

Chris -

As always, absolutely stunning work. I'm personally not a fan of some of the colors, but the work is impeccable! You build what the customer wants, and you can't deny that!

I appreciate the time you take to share your craft with us.

The work is phenomenal. So far I have a HEP Grand Prix and Champion Pub. I gave Chris free reign to mix it up a bit on each pin. His changes are tasteful.

Could you please send a link for that red sanding wheel again. The stores don’t have any and I need one badly.

Please post a link to that red sanding pad. No store has one and I need on for a project

Everything is in order on the HS cabinet [quoted image]
The issue with the original hinge is that it is flimsy.
Right after HS they switched to a thicker style that better distributed on the neck.

You can see how much thicker the hinges are.

Double check the fit. All set.[quoted image][quoted image]

Chris,

Where can I get these hinges from?

Chris,

I would keep an eye on EBay.
That is where I found mine.

Wood rail cabinet day
First to sand it.
The clear applications thus far have not been sprayed with a finishing technique.
Just really sprayed and used as a primer and sealer.
I will start to really true the surface in these final sessions
In order to do that I will focus on each side flat and independently.

I aim to slicker it and start working on dialing in the line work. 8842C37F-EF62-4996-922A-F5CF4E026E4E (resized).jpeg8842C37F-EF62-4996-922A-F5CF4E026E4E (resized).jpeg
As I sand in this position I can really track hard edges, surface level and break throughs. AF2E7975-CF3A-4E98-8D04-7721310E2685 (resized).jpegAF2E7975-CF3A-4E98-8D04-7721310E2685 (resized).jpeg
